Eh, sorry to bother, because this is a topic that fits more with the montly thread than yours, but I have an idea…
It’s possible to make Anakin build R2 instead of C-3PO with editing, given the images and audio available? Because thinking about it, 3PO being built by Anakin doesn’t make much sense story wise, but R2 makes A LOT of sense, since Anakin have a strong connection with R2 and vice-versa, and R2 have a really strong connection with Luke.

I really have no idea. I know how I would approach them, but I haven’t thought about if i actually want. The Phantom Menace has a special place in my heart and gives me great nostalgia and it has a lot of good in it - it is just not presented as well as it should and could have been.
As for the other two; well, they are kinda computer games really…

Hope progress is going well! v1 Is probably hands down my favorite TPM edit, solely due to how much it radically altered the original film, the changes for v2 look and sound great so far!
I first and foremost want to say that is it really to your credit that you are fixing this movie. Out of the Lucas Star Wars movies, The Phantom Menace was one that I did not believe could be redeemed through editing alone. The entire structure and plot of the film needed fixing.
One thing I will say is that there are other editors using the Australian dub for JarJar. You could consider using that as I find his voice a real nuisance. I could not stand it even the little bit I saw of him in the Hal9000 edit of the movie. I apologize in advance if you heard this already.
I know you said you were possibly making a canon compliant version of the film, and I do know I am one of those in favor of that. However, any improvement in this movie is a welcome addition. Besides, the Lucas Star Wars films were not exactly canon compliant either.
As for the Obi Wan character, I see you plan to have him impatient and aggressive. Does that ever manifest in the form of action, or only words? I say this because in the OT, Kenobi does inform Yoda he was reckless like Luke in his youth. This is also a way to help with his character development demonstrating through action rather than words. I apologize if you already indicated this was part of your plan.

Great news! Your v1 was absolutely revolutionary in terms of structure and changes for TPM. An update is certainly needed to bring it to a full “release” stage, but that first draft showed some real potential so I am glad to see it back in the works.

Do you by chance still have the original version of The Ancient Lore? I haven’t seen it but I’ve heard great things! And when the new version is out, I’d like to see that one too!
(I’m new here. Forgive me if this isn’t the correct way to go about requesting access to an edit.)
So, the decision to make The Ancient Lore canon-friendly with a higher accuracy will remain firm, and therefore many of the old plot decisions will be gone. The “new” music is also gone. The film needs its original identity.
As for other things;
The Phantom Menace was shot on film, with high browns, dark shadows and a cyan blue. The denoised, high bitrate Disney blu-ray’s and 4k’s are an abomonation and make the CGI look like wax, and the 35mm film prints are noisy and - at certain points - lack detail.
Therefore, the middle-point for me was to use the (not-denoised-/DNR-less-) version of the film; an upscaled HDTV Rip. Then, with my own custom color grading, the next step was to carefully replace and repurpose the original colors of the film (that have been lost since cinemas, except for the mentioned 35mm film print(s)).
This was also important so that today’s children, whom are used to clean screens and firm colors, was kept in the loop when watching The Ancient Lore.
As mentioned the original palette had dark browns, dark shadows and a cyan blue, whilst the DVD and onward versions have replaced the cyan blue with purple and the dark shadows with bright shadows. Also the orange has been toned down to something more pink.

The original filmprint has surprisingly dark shadows and colors, and this was important for me to mimic. I love the vintage style of it, but with a modern twist.
I also included a slightly new but unfinished tweak, which was to extend the Nute Gunray scene to also include the Queen of Naboo’s dialogue about the Ambassadors. I find it more thrilling to the story to have them deny their presence whilst they are in the ship, unknowing of the present danger.

it look good but did you abandoned the idea of dubbing and change viceroy gunguns darth sideous dialogue ?
No, I did not. I will still have them dubbed with darker, more menacing voices, and different dialogues - although steered towards the canon plotpoints rather than the original cloning facility storyline I created.
The color grading and look of the film is step 1.
Step 2 is the cut and visual effects.
And then I will leave the audio work for last.
The project is redone from scatch.

Wow, those voices are a big improvement from the old ones, and I love him speaking basic for a sec, gives Nute a little more character.

I can’t help but feel the color grading’s maybe a little too… much in a few areas. In concept I like the idea of trying to restore the original tones, but I can’t help but feel it maybe swings a bit tooo far into cyan/orange, not to mention being far too dark in a lot of areas.
I do love the new dialogue for the Viceroy though, both voiced and written.
