reading Total Film this month, theres a quick Q&A with Rick McCallum.

IN the original trilogy, how did Vader know Luke is still alive - when the Emperor never tells him in Sith?

That happened between Episode IV and V. It’s in the deleted scenes from Episode IV, but we didn’t have DVD’s then so we couldn’t put it out. Shame, 'cos its a brilliant sequence.

is this a belated april fool's joke. seriously they could've included all the deleted materials in the trilogy box set, they have them in the lucasfilm archives. we would eat this stuff up, even if it was released uncleaned up or without the effects finished. I think the reason they have not been is lucas knows fans will recut the films to put the footage back in. back in his first interview with wired magazine he said he did'nt think people should be able to touch another artists film because of artists rights.

this would apply to the orginal trilogy which he recut twice and is recutting again, even though he own's them they were a collaborative effort. I cannot believe he's allowed to bury the originals and none of the guilds or academys will stop him, what about the people who slaved over these films should'nt their work be preserved? I think lucas should be able to do what he wants with his films, only if the original versions are preserved on dvd. I mean the model builders, the mask makers, puppeteers etc. work should be preserved. Does'nt suprise me that he would crap all over these creative artists endeavors however, since even today he won't ackowledge john dykstra and look at his phenomenal work on star trek the motion picture, battlestar galactica (original) and spider man and spider man II. He evented the motion control dykstaflex camera that back in the 70's made star wars so amazing, i admit the two and a half million dollars spent by lucas not by him to get it working however.

And i still think Gary Kurtz should've been involved on jedi, and the prequels, and lawrence kasden etc. and the original production crew, although it would've cost more money. I don't think the young indy crew should have been used on the prequels. If he would only get the original artists, writers back together and make episode 7
he could be redeemed in all star wars fans eyes, with mark hamill, harrison ford and carrie fisher returning, or at least just mark hamill as a ben kenobi type character passing on the torch to the next generation of jedi knights end capping the series. No need to make episodes 8 or 9.

Rick McCallum is an ass. "We" didn't have DVD's then. Bah! "We" nothing.

gary kurtz and howard kazanjian at least had the artistic integrity to challenge him on some things, and that's why he hired McCallum because he does whatever george wants.

I wonder if this ties in to Lucas' ANH commentary where he says he would've liked to add a scene with Vader and the Emperor on Coruscant. This is an alteration that I think is essential for the saga, but I'm sure many will disagree.

It's got to be a joke. (Or a hint at yet more new stuff being added.) It seems very unlikely there would still be a cut scene we haven't heard of after three decades. Fans would have sniffed it out long before now.

Where were you in '77?

Deleted scene filmed in 1976 involving Vader and/or the Emperor regarding the fact that Anakin's son Luke is still alive??? Not likely. I don't know where McCallum gets his info but why would this alleged "deleted scene" have not surfaced SOMEWHERE in some form over the past thirty years? Particularly in either the novels, radio dramas or annotated screenplays. A FILMED scene!

Don't you think that after the big revelation in ESB (or especially after it's confirmation by Yoda in ROTJ) they would've rushed into the archives, dusted off the film cans and spliced that puppy right into a re-release of ANH to build support for the plot twist?

Nah. I don't buy it. Doesn't exist. Never existed. DICK McCallum (sic) doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

Well obvioulsy it's not a deleted scene, but I think McCallum just got his terminology wrong and there might be a new scene in the works to be included in a future release.

Not only does this "deleted scene" obviously not exist, but there's absolutely no need for it.

Yeah, there is no record of this scene ever being filmed or even written for ANH. Maybe Rick is thinking of one of the more recent comics that detailed Vader's discovering of the Son of Skywalker.

And The Cassidy is dead on. Rick sometimes thinks he is Gary Kurtz. He should see a shrink for his rectal-cranial inversion.

If that scene was being added for the next edition any dialouge about Luke would make the new Empire Strikes Back Emperor and Vader dialouge redundant surely

That's an iron-clad guarantee that the change will be made then!
