Idea: Preserving Episodes 1-3? — Page 2

And also, according to early DVD reviews, the version of Episode III on the DVD will be the theatrical cut.

It seems that this may be the first Star Wars film released on DVD in its original version.

And Ep. III would be really, really easy considering the quality of the bootlegs.

If the official DVD is actually the theatrical cut, that's one flick that is pre-preserved.
We don't have enough road to get up to 88.

I suggest changing Jar, Jar into a CGI of a Big Can of Talking Beans! That may be just right.

hehe.

as for eps 1 to 3, it would be cool if all the deleted stuff was put back in each film. maybe with "seamless branching"? I for one
wish yoda landing home was in 3.

Weird.
Well, I hope you made Telecine versions of them! hehe!

Actually, I kind of want to see Ian as Palpy in ESB on the big screen some day.

as far as i'm aware the best quality theatrical version of attack of the clones was a an unofficial fan release/ preservation on super vcd on 3 discs and is slightly different than the official dvd release but the quality is sub par.

Wow- I STILL can't believe the DVD of Ep. III will be exactly as it was shown in theatres. The digital changes can get very subtle. However, I guess the question is also whether the sound mix was altered at all. Is there any reason to want the bootleg? I guess we'll find out when the DVD comes out. Maybe someone could do a split-screen comparison on their monitors and find out for sure.

Episode I would be very easy to do the theatrical cut of- the 5.1 from the LD is already on some type of bootleg and we have the establishing Coruscant shot from the LD. And the official DVD with the "Watto cheering shot" on Disc 2. It would just be a matter of putting it together.

Episode II: Still sounds like the missing footage has not surfaced in high enough quality to be mixed in with the DVD. Which is too bad.

That said, both AOTC and TPM's theatrical versions don't exist on DVD.

Preservation of the prequels is best left to fans of the prequels. A vast majority of people (if not, everybody) on here preserve the O-OT because they have a deep appreciation for it. Why else would one put that much effort into it?

Because they have a deep appreciation for art, period? That's why stuff is preserved in museums and such. I guarantee you every curator of every museum doesn't think every piece of art in it is great. I'm sure some of em think a goodish amount of the stuff housed in their walls is actually pretty crappy. Doesn't make it any less a work of art. It just makes it BAD art. but if you believe art needs to be preserved, you should preserve ALL of it. That's the goal of film preservation societies all over the place. They don't want ANYTHING to go out of print or be lost to the elements ever. And if anything, this forum has become less a Star Wars forum, and more a film preservation/editor wanna-be forum. And don't take the term "wanna-be" negatively, either. It's sort of like streetball--there's some GREAT playground players. Doesn't mean they don't wanna be in the NBA.

And who says nobody here wouldn't LIKE theatrical versions of the Prequels? Believe it or not, there are prequel fans here. I understand why you wouldn't think so, after spending all that time writing and re-writing, but there are people here who, if you offered up a "Prequel Trilogy Original Edition" to go along with their Original Trilogy Laserdisc rips, would grab both so they could say they have the ORIGINAL Star Wars saga in it's entirety. That's a film fan sort of thing right there. It's why some of us still have old, out of date dvd releases and some Vhs stuff, even though we can get things on DVD still.

No, the reviews are out. We know. Nothing got changed.

before the release of revenge of the sith on both film screen and digital, rick m. said the digital version was going to probalbly be closer to the dvd and have the yoda landing on dagobah scene, a more finished version. of course we know the film/ digital are identical, rick said they "might" Put a longer version out there in digital cinemas. Of course with lucasfilms planning of 3-d versions of all six films the revenge of the sith imax was cancelled early on. They said attack of the clones imax did'nt make enough money to warrant a release of sith in that format. from what i know of the imax most showings were sold out and it made tons of money, so when rick said it did'nt make enough money he was bullshitting us all.

Possibly. But the IMAX screenings only made about 8 mil. I think it cost about that much to transfer and make prints of Attack of the Clones. I think they were expecting around 15-20 mil from IMAX showings.

the clips from star wars in burtt's film special effects made me wish back in the day, that the original trilogy would be done imax. I think i remember someone who worked at the museum of science in boston told me lucasfilm was going to do it, this was before the special editions.

If anyone is interested, I have thrown together a quick page of the "mechanical hand" shot at the end of Episode 2 comparing the Theatrical Film release to the Theatrical Digital/DVD release.

The film version is from a really shitty CAM on VCD that a pal found for me at the bottom of a drawer!!

Here it is!!

If the DVD screener ever shows up, I will add the better screenshots to the page.

Mind posting what that is here?

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Basically, in the version that leaked out, there is a wipe from the shot of Obi-Wan and Threepio in the cockpit of Padme's ship leaving Mustafar to Anakin's mechanical hand grasping at the volcanic soil. The DVD has a straight cut instead.

So basically we have an excuse to have a 6 CD theatrical cut set, heh. Would I be correct in saying it wouldn't be illegal for me to download any of the Ep III bootleg rips to my computer since I own the DVD? Or is it still in sketchy territory?
I really don't care that much, I just think it'd be nice to have it for the sake of completion.

Yes, MF.com confirmed that there is onechange, albeit minor. In the original theatrical cut, a wipe makes the transition from the cockpit scene of Padme's ship with C-3PO and Obi-Wan at the controls, to Ankin clawing his way up the lava bank. However, in the DVD, there is merely a straight cut from the first scene to the next.
