With our luck it’ll most likely use the same 4K master as the previous Blu-ray with all the changes intact, and the “extensive visual effects work” might just be code for “more changes”…good thing this project exists at least!

I am crossing my fingers and toes that they have fixed the color grade. This may be the last chance for Raiders to get mastered correctly. If it does turn out to be the blu-ray grade, we’ll be starting a new version of this project to try and get a good 4K theatrical experience finished. But I am really hoping the 4K release knocks it out of the park.

Film4 (UK) aired ROTLA tonight and it was the Blu-ray version. Even taking into consideration that it has been downscaled to 576i and suffers from a mediocre bitrate (I don’t have access to Film4 HD), as others have already noted, this just looks horrible in terms of the garish colours that are present during many scenes and the orange skin tones that have been applied to Ford and numerous other actors.

Judging by what I’ve watched this evening, I’m glad that I heeded the warnings and avoided the Blu-ray release. Whilst I appreciate that there are members who enjoy seeing the film presented in this form, for me it’s simply unwatchable. I’ve got the DVD, the 2008 Lowry version that routinely aired on BBC One and BBC Three for many years and Litemakr’s brilliant 35mm transfer - I shall continue to enjoy those, particularly if the 4K release scheduled for next month turns out to be a disappointment.

Thanks again Litemakr for presenting this film as it was meant to be seen. 😃

I agree the transfer of that Blu-Ray is so bad that when i could have bought it in the 12 dollar bin at Target, i passed on it. Temple and Crusade are also ancient transfers at this point honestly as well. Hopefully the new release isn’t just the same crap in 4K. At least Temple and Crusade will have gotten upgraded transfers. I’ll have to throw raiders in the trash if its the same master and keep this Litemakr release.

Also hopefully the blu’s not the 4k isn’t just the same old ones repackaged if they aren’t the new 4k i’m going to return them/cancel my order.

Addendum: I can indeed confirm the blu ray 4 film collection from 2021 is the same transfers from 2012 with the messed up colors for Raiders. Apparently only the digital 4k and 4k disc are the new transfers. They couldn’t be bothered to master new 1080P copies for digital and blu ray.

WOW!! I just found out about this copy! Saw the examples on youtube and I am absolutelly astonished! I ve grown up in a small town and all the releases were a grindhouse expierience for me so this movie would be my ultimate theater expierience again after all these years digital projection have replaced 35mm film in the cinemas. Congratulations for this amazing offering! Would someone please give me a link? Thank you!

So what’s the scoop on the new 4K Blu-ray transfer? Does it have the same problems as the original Blu-Ray transfer? Is it bad?

A lot of the color problems are fixed and more natural looking. However a few effects shots have been recomposited.

The 4K is from the same master as the Blu-Ray. They didn’t do a rescan. And further clean up work was done on opticals, more dnr as well apparently but not in the whole picture. Its a mixed bag. Looks fine on a modern set but not how it looked in 1981.

So is the UHD an upscaled 2K scan or a native 4K one?

Its native, just like a decade old and done by Pacific Title.

Just like those Star Wars 4K discs were done around the same time by Reliance Mediaworks, AKA Lowry.

Have no idea why they sat on it for so long.

Must be a Lucasfilm thing.

Raiders was done in 2011-2012

Star Wars was done in 2012-2013.

Only for both to be released a near decade later.

Please could I have a link for this? thanks

Hi All, I don’t have a direct link to a torrent or download for this project. It is hosted on MySpleen per my group’s policy and I am guessing it is also on other sites and usernet. But I don’t have links so you will need to do some searching to find it if it’s still out there. So please don’t PM me asking for links because I can’t help. Sorry about that.

I’ve seen this discussion (yellow/gold tint on Raiders blu ray) on various sites, and I don’t want to get into a big discussion or step on any toes, but I’d like to relate my experiences with this movie as I was 18 and saw it when it first came out, and people who saw it in theaters should relate their experience for how it looked originally. If no one wants to hear another raiders color experience, by all means, ignore me.

When I first saw the movie, the one thing that stood out immediately was a very warm tint, and I may have remarked to my date (now my wife) how warm the movie was. Now mind you, I wasn’t into video or audio hobbies or equipment at this point in my life, but the warmth was immediately apparent to me. It looked like most outdoor scenes were shot in morning or evening light, but bright as normal daylight. The Nepal bar scenes were definitely warm looking (yellow/red tints). I saw the movie a couple of times in big theaters and it was always the same. When it first aired on television, I thought how it already looked old and faded and cold (no warm tint). Every release I’ve seen since then (only vhs and dvd) looked as if it was taken from an old faded videotape of the movie. It never looked right (or like I first saw it in theaters). It always seemed cold and somehow faded, and looked like a 50’s or 60’s faded movie.

When I first saw the 2012 Blu ray, I thought to myself, “Finally, this movie looks like I remember!” It’s warm and friendly looking again. Just my 2 cents, but the (2012) blu ray version looks closest to what I remember seeing in theaters. Now I’ll grant you, the cave shots may be a bit brighter, and some scenes look blurry (the spiders on their backs), so maybe not perfect, but good.

I’m not going to argue if someone wants the yellows toned down a bit, or darkens the movie a tad, or even if they want to perfectly correct the colors, but the blu ray is essentially the experience I had in theaters if you want the original theater look. With all the home releases viewed over the years, even people who saw it in theaters may have skewed memories of how warm this movie was, but my memory of how warm the movie was has actually stuck with me all these years, even before there was a yellow tint/no tint debate. Again, just my $.02.

Personally I think the original DVD looks the best in terms of colors.

Last night, I was lucky enough to catch a 35mm screening at the academy museum. They made the new print directly from their original preserved negative. Let me tell you, it looked like it came out yesterday and the image was so clear. I felt like I could reach out my hand to touch Harrison Ford’s beautiful face! But the color was incredible, and your print is definitely the closest to what I watched last night. Now, if memory serves me, there was some warmth, but only a nudge as the movie looked really well white balanced. It was just the right amount, so if anyone wants to get a more theatrical color grade, it’s this print you released with a touch of warmth and a bit less of a pink tint. (Also, sidenote, the skintones where some of the best I’ve ever seen. It was the healthiest middle ground of saturation and color for Indy’s face, even while they were in Egypt!)

This would be a nice back-up if it were scanned at 4K on a most excellent scanner. Large file-size too, mkv, H.265, HDR, and original cinema audio. If it’s 1080p still, big pass on that.
