Back in 1986, when “Transformers” was the most popular franchise ever in the universe for young boys, and billions like me watched the daily 30-minute toy commercial that was the weekday afternoon cartoon, the announcement of Transformers: the Movie was the biggest and greatest thing imaginable.
Then, fast-forward to the movie’s release and, like many, I was devastated by the deaths of Optimus Prime, Ironhide, and others I loved as a child.
I realize that some really like the film, and there are, of course, things to like about it. It was bold and willing to take risks. I just feel that, when Hot Rod’s hero’s journey arc completes, and he emerges as Rodimus Prime, exploding Unicron and taking the Matrix, something was missing. There could have been more heft. Higher stakes. It should’ve been epic.
So I embarked on a few month’s long quest to fix it. First, no more mean-spiritedness, the dead characters get a proper send off with a memorial scene. Second, Optimus Prime is the star, full stop. His survival largely comes at the expense of Hot Rod’s character arc but it’s a worthy tradeoff. Third, the stakes are higher, Unicron is not just a threat to Cybertron, but to Earth, humanity, and the universe. Then, it was just a question of putting those elements together and making this fan edit.
