Hopefully I haven’t missed out on the link-giving… I’ve been excited to check this edit out since reading the goals/description, but can’t find a working source for it.

Thanks!

Got around to watch this and it was really good and professional. Some quick thoughts:

-Fat was trimmed in great places, no unnecessary romance, questionable humor with the town major and his advisor and no illogical references to LotR characters.

-I noticed some quite fast cuts from a character saying something and then the next scene beginning, could have used a few seconds of breathing time. But maybe there wasn’t any footage for it until the next character said something.

-Thorin turning back from the madness was well done, no overdone slow motion dwelling in the dungeons first. Dwalin’s talk with him is the last push needed for him to come back.

-The cut from Thorin saying they are gonna kill Azog to them being in the town ruins was little quick. Is seems they got there in an instant. Maybe could have used some shots of starting to ride towards the town. Their fight was cut great however, being more dynamic now and not bloated.

-The good build up scene between Bilbo and Smaug is kept, but the overlong battle between him and the dwarfs is cut, which is good cause it doesn’t really advance the plot.

-Scenes leading to Fili’s death are cut quite quick, when the scenes between are cut.

-Funeral of the dwarfs is included which is great! It was weird that it was cut in theatrical and you were felt wondering about the fate of the arkenstone.

-I have not seen other Hobbit edits and don’t know how this compares to them but this beats my official Blu rays easily. No reason to watch them now. Now the Hobbit is just one (long) movie and LotR are three, just like the books.

And yeah it seems like your critiques center around a few moments feeling a bit quick and I can agree with that analysis. In all these cases of heavily restructured scenes (such as the Thranduil post battle scene where it might feel quick even if there’s nothing “technically” wrong with the transitions/audio), it’s definitely because of a lack of footage. I’ve tried the best with what I have to work with and would never purposefully exclude or shorten shots to quicken pacing.

With Ravenhill, so much stuff had to go IMO (Tauriel, Bolg, Legolas, riding goats, etc.) so it’s really just a subjective choice, do you keep some of that and maintain slower pacing, or do you remove it to be like the book but then deal with a bit faster pacing. I’d go with the latter, definitely pros and cons to both sides though.

Have been looking everywhere for a book version of the Hobbit movies. Always thought the 3 movies were just created as a drawn-out money spinning exercise, so it would be interesting to finally see if it would work as one stand alone entity. Would love the links for this if poss please

I really enjoyed this. It feels a lot classier to watch. It’s great without a lot of the overtly wacky elements or overwrought appendices stuff and just feels like the bedtime story it’s supposed to be. Some kind of transition of going up to Azog would be nice, as well as some more mourning of Fili and Kili or avenging them by killing Bolg, but I understand that is 100% not your fault and comes down to a lack of footage. If I had my druthers I would redesign all the CG orcs and probably redesign most of the dwarves too.
The big deviation from the book that I see, and I completely understand that you had to do this too, is that Bilbo never says “the eagles are coming” as they fly over.

Other than that it’s perfect. I would feel comfortable watching this with family and friends.

Thanks man I really appreciate it, glad you liked the edit. I agree, there’s still so many small things I wish we could do differently but just gotta work with what we got

So I finally got time to sit down and watch M4’s book edit. Honestly, I feel like this edit rescued The Hobbit movies for me. I was so disappointed with the theatrical releases deviations from the source material, adding subplots, etc. (the let down made worse by the excellent start with the meeting at Bag End) that I had basically written off getting to see Bilbo’s adventure brought to life on screen. Well, the thoroughly enjoyable 4 hours I just spent with M4’s edition changed all that! While not perfect, in my opinion M4 has done the best anyone could hope to given the available footage to work with, and this will be my recommendation to anyone looking for a movie adaptation of The Hobbit.

Cheers mate, I really appreciate it. I’m so invested in this adaptation and working with what we have, but I wonder how many years (decades likely) it’ll be till we get to enjoy another one by a new director. Fan edits (and the '77 cartoon) will have to do till then in my opinion

Hey again! Been a while; I’ve returned to my own fan edit projects for the first time in a while, and if it’s all right, I’m back with a couple more fan editing questions (just two this time hehe)

  1. How can I export without or with minimum compression/pixelation in dark areas of the image? My current efforts have seen heavy pixellation. My process is encoding the Blu-Ray Rip in Handbrake at max quality, then exporting as .mp4 or .mov. I’d love to have maximum visual quality, is it an mkv thing? I’m on the free version of DaVinci Resolve so I may be limited there

  2. How can I export DTS audio? Currently I’m just exporting AAC, which has so far been fine, but again, max quality would be really nice

I know I’ve had a lot of questions, but exporting’s turned out more complicated than I thought!

These exports are just some quite basic LOTR edits (added musical overtures, musical intermissions, chapter titles for the now six parts, and some minor cuts/trims), and I’d love to be able to have them in as high quality as possible. I may bring them to this site.

Compression is dependent on the bitrate, so if you set it higher, then there will be less, but your filesize will be larger. I recommend downloading this free open source program MediaInfo https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo and if you throw any video (including my edits) onto it it’ll read you all of the metadata. You can look for the bitrates and get an idea of what other fan edits/movies are which could help you. For me, you will see I went with 11mbps VBR for the MKV, and 30mbps CBR for the Blu-ray ISO version.

So the quality doesn’t have anything to do with the MKV, both the above versions I mentioned are h264 videos that have been encoded at different bitrates, and then they have been output in different containers (the first in an MKV, the latter bundled in ISOs)

  1. How can I export DTS audio? Currently I’m just exporting AAC, which has so far been fine, but again, max quality would be really nice

You need to have the DTS encoder, you export your audio as 6 separate WAV files (5.1) and then load all 6 into the program. For the MKV, I used normal DTS, and for the Blu-ray I used DTS-HD Master Audio (lossless).

Unfortunately, the normal DTS encoder is discontinued and you can only buy the latest (extremely expensive) DTS X encoder. You’ll have to find an ‘alternate’ method of acquiring the DTS-HD Master Audio Suite program.

Hello again, lads.

I lost my copy of the movie from my hard drive and was hoping to download it again from the “Wordpress” website, but it is gone. Same thing with the Discord group. What happened?
