DUNE (2021) Minimalist (Audio) Fan edit idea(s)

This post is more a sharing of my ideas for a fan edit of Denis Villenueve’s Dune, thoughts that I have had while watching the movie (many times). As I have no time on my own to implement any of these ideas, I thought I would share them in this forum. I generally really love most of the movie, and would leave it mostly the way DV presented it (as no deleted scenes have been released, an extended version would not be possible), but the only things I would try to improve upon have to do entirely with the audio aspect of the film. Here are a few of my ideas;

  1. Remove the Sardukar dialogue from the beginning of the movie when the ‘Dreams are messages from the deep’ subtitle comes on the screen. Personally, I feel the dialogue does nothing for this scene, and doesn’t really make sense within context of the movie, as the Sardukar are clueless to Paul’s dreams.

  2. While I love Hans Zimmer’s score, I personally feel it is mixed a bit too loud in certain places within the movie, mostly when there’s anytime one is straining to hear dialogue over the score. I don’t have specific scenes to point out right now, but I may update this post in the future with thoughts on that.

  3. While I don’t think this is possible, if there are ways to somehow improve Rebecca Ferguson’s dialogue (enunciation) on scenes where she’s whispering, that would be something to address as well (I realize short of having the dialogue re-recorded, there may not be anything that can be done with this).

Thanks for taking the time to read this post, let me know what your thoughts may be with these suggestions. And if anybody actually takes the time to implement these ideas, I would be anxious to check out the results!

I disagree with 1 but agree with 2 and 3. I noticed that as well and those were some of the only things I didn’t like. I also thought that Paul should have said the “fear is the mind-killer” speech like he does in the trailer, but they only have Jessica say it and they make it seem like it’s something that you do out of weakness, and not a representation of training and strength.
I’m not sure where you would put it, maybe when they’re flying in the sandstorm or maybe during the march into the desert with the Fremen at the end.

I love Arrival and Dune…however…my gripe with both of them is the music.
I think both need something more organic, personally I think the works of David Sylvian work better. I’d love to strip the music entirely from both movies and rescore them with Sylvian’s work (instrumentals from the Brilliant Trees era, Gone to Earth instrumental disc, Rain Tree Crow tracks and his collaborative albums with Holger Czukay). Sadly I have no clue how to accomplish this.
