Se7en: Criterion Edition preservation set — Page 5

DVD-Lab.

It's pretty self explanatory as far as both the stills and audio. Create a "still" track and drop your pictures in.

But some people are having the same problems with the audio-only tracks as well.

But like I said, no problems on my newer player/recorder or my computer. Only have some problems on my older Malata.

OK, I'm high. The Rob Bottin stuff I'm thinking of wasn't on the se7en LD. Unfortunately, it isn't on The Howling SE DVD either, so now it's REALLY bothering me. Next stop: Total Recall LE.

Also, no problems with your se7en DVD using XBox as my DVD player. Great presentation of the musical score, too, BTW.

well, it took to a week to grab.. but I now have it..

FANTASTIC!

I don't think that I could have imagined the vast array of supplementals that I have just sat through.

It is an amazing 2 disc set that you have produced digitalfreaknyc and I applaud you.

The menus are top notch.. very professional and better than some retail discs!

The layout is clear and concise, what you click is what you get! :-)

I will clarify the problems that people have been having

On my 5 year old sony DVP536 clicking on "promotional art" and any part of the soundtrack stops the disc. SO those features are not available.

However....

like chumlee..on my 10 month old XBOX the discs play fine. no errors at all!

so it is definitely a compatibility problem with older players/drives and not the discs.

Once again, EVERYONE should get this set ASAP.. it is an ESSENTIAL companion to the new line DVD.. and dare I say.. BETTER than the new line supplementals!

A wonderful , wonderful set digitalfeaknyc.

Many many thanks

I just got this and holy crap I can't believe it's a fan-made set. Anyone that's fan of the flick needs to get this ASAP.

DigitalFreak, you used DVD-lab Pro, yeah? If so, I might have to get some pointers from you.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Hi DigitalFreak,

Sorry for not following up on my post earlier. I don't have much of a clue about DVD Lab, so I'll let ReverendBeastly advise you on that front. I'm sure you're not doing anything wrong, and every disc seems to have some compatibility issues (even the Matrix!).

Coming from a different direction with regards to the authoring, there is nothing in the DVD Spec for a 'Still Track'. Spruce Maestro offers you menus that are stills, loops or play onces and divides your assets into either menus or movies, and even this is quite an abstraction layer. Scenarist just gives you the option of PGCs which you build up as either tracks with navigation and highlights (menus) or not (movies). I'm a bit rusty on Scenarist, so someone may correct me there.

As far as I'm aware, you can make a still have a duration up to 254 seconds. At 255 seconds the DVD Player will hold the image infinitely. With regards to audio, I believe you must always have some sort of video in a track (I know Spruce throws up an error if you don't).

What I'm trying to say in a roundabout way is that perhaps DVD-Lab is doing things behind the scenes which are causing these issues people are experiencing. As I said, it sounds like Reverend Beastly will be able to help you with more specifics, but I thought knowing the in's and out's and behind the scenes might also be of help.

Wow. What a great bunch of posts to wake up to!

Echoes, Cassius, Reverend: Thank you all for your comments. I really appreciate it. I tried to put my all into this project and it's actually the biggest that I've ever tackled so I'm glad that you're all enjoying it.

Reverend, yeah I used DVD-Lab for everything (authoring-wise).

DVD-Boy, sounds like I'm going to have to teach Reverend, not the other way around. But I"d be open to any suggestions. At this point, I think it's just a compatibility issue. I don't plan on doing any "soundtrack" options on any future releases. The only reason I included Se7en was that the original score was never made officially available so I threw it on there. The Game will definitely have some "still" galleries so I'm sure we'll run into the same issues with that but at the moment it doesn't seem like there's much I can do about it at this point. I really like DVD-Lab and am becoming very familiar with it.

In any case, keep the comments coming!! And thanks again!!!

Can't wait for the game. I do hope you include EVERYTHING as It's also a long wanted release for me! :-) As Long as something in my house plays it.. I don't care! :-)

Ps. The Presentation of the SE7EN score was damn slick! Excellent.

DVD LAB is a pretty powerful tool. I did a disc for BBC TV's "THREADS" on it a while back and was very impressed with the results. Your se7en disc has just given me more inspiration to delve back into DVD LAB.

looking forward to the Blade Runner Extras too.

Now... If only someone could do the criterion Close Encounters........

Hi DigitalFreak,

Yeah, I just reread Reverend Beastly's post!

The one way to get around the soundtrack would be to generate an M2V file of the length of the audio, and put it in as a movie. If it is just a still image with no animation, you should be able to get the bitrate really low.

With regards to the still gallery you might have a couple of options. You could either author each image as a still menu with PREV, NEXT and MENU buttons which may be a little time consuming but possible with copying and pasting. If you can do command sequences / scripting you can probably make a generice script for the PREV and NEXT buttons, and the MENU will always link to the same place. The other option would be to render out all of your images as one long sequence, with forced I Frames on the beginning of each image (I believe TMPGEnc allows you to do this). Import your gallery as a single piece of video and place chapter points on each image change. Set these chapter points to infinite pause and each image should hold until you place the NEXT CHAPTER button on the remote.

As I said, I'm not versed in DVD-Lab, and if it is a compatibility thing, well there will always be a couple of players. Maybe this is in need of a bug fix by the DVD-Lab guys?

DVD-Boy,

What I had done was put a "still" from the movie for each audio track so at least there would be something on screen while the music played.
Now I'm thinking of making one big ac-3 file. I think I should be able to put the length of the photo on the screen which would match up with the "track" playing. I could also put in chapter stops as well to skip around. Again, this is all hypothetical because I'm not sure if I can do what i'm suggesting. The other thing is that I'd like to just be able to have it stop after the one track and not play them all through. Again, all something to be investigated.

Cassius,

Everything from the laserdisc release will DEFINITELY be on this upcoming release. I wouldn't release it any other way. In addition to that, the Japanese version that I'm using as the master had a "making of" special (about 30 minutes) as well as Japanese trailers/TV spots so those will be on there as well.

I use DVD Architect for all my discs. Works like a charm and I have yet to have any problems with it.

That should work, just create a video of the still for the duration of the audio, and you should be able to really compress the hell out of it as there is no motion. Coming back to the menu having only played one chapter is certainly do-able in DVD Maestro and DVD Studio Pro and probably in Scenarist. Maestro enables you to specify different end actions for each chapter, alternatively you could use playlists or stories to isolate each chapter as a seperate video and play them out seperately, with a play all function that just plays the full length 'movie'. Doing a quick check of the DVD Lab website, I notice they do Chapter Playlists in the Pro version, so all you need to do is make a number of playlists, which each consist of a single chapter of your full-length movie.

PS: On a related note, is there any chance of a few more seeders over at MySpleen - I've been away from the computer for a week and haven't finished downloading this yet

Somewhat unrelated. I've been trying to use DVD Lab-Pro and am having a small problem. I added a slideshow by accident. Simple question, but how do I remove it? I don't see anything that allows me to do so.
