Hi everyone,

I’m a Studio Assistant for a company in London called ‘R3store Studios’, and I’m just starting to learn digital-restoration from the best.

I was wondering if anyone has any projects that need help with digital restoration? Such as removing scratches, dirt, flicker and incorporating stabilisation. I’d love to help out for free, in order to keep film restoration alive and also improve my own skills going forward.

let me know your thoughts, our team works on many titles for Arrow Video so they’re the guys I’m learning from. Not bad, huh?

Out of curiosity, what do people who work in the industry think of the fan restoration scene? Are they even aware of it?
I would think if more pros were aware of many of the reasons people do their own restorations, such as heavy NR, poor audio remixes, etc., it would increase the overall quality of a lot of official releases.

Anyways, welcome to the forum!

Thank you for the welcome! From what I’ve seen, the people that are actually doing the restorations themselves don’t have any knowledge on fan restorations/projects. But the guys I work with are very specific with their work and hate using tools such as NR which I was very appreciative to find out. The head of digital restoration here said he can count on one hand how many times he’s used NR and hates doing it due to compromising detail.

I’d love to raise awareness of fan projects and spread the word, but we mostly work with Arrow Video who are one of the few companies that actually take good care of their restorations!

I don’t necessarily need help on anything, but you should create a course about what you learn. I’m trying to get into manual restoration because automatic has a lot of downsides and I’m interested in starting my own Blu-Ray brand similar to Shout-Factory, Arrow Video, and other boutique brands.

That’s a great idea. I have nothing but encouragement for your idea, hopefully I’ll get good enough that you’ll hire me! I’ve got endless lists of films I’m dying to give physical Media releases to. Would be a dream to work on them.

I’m sending you a PM. Check the speech-bubble near your avatar at the top of the page.

FWIW I’m doing all my scanning professionally at the moment. I want to get into restoration as well down the line.

Did you see my PM? Click the speech bubble at the top of the page next to your avatar.

Looking forward to hearing an email from you. If you can help out in London it would be very much appreciated as I’ve got a decent cheap scanner available in London but we would like to have someone who doesn’t mind picking up the film and shipping it or helping out to sell it afterwards etc if needed. That would be a really big help to anyone who wants to do a scan in the UK without having to ship their print to Europe or the US.

Thanks for coming here and saying hello…

Although this is a Star Wars Forum and we all Love Star Wars…

Conan the Barbarian to have a full restoration of the Myriad of scene that were excised is the pinnacle of my film restoration dreams. I heard Arrow might be working on that soon? but I sincerely doubt anyone has the guts to piece it back together given the gore and so on let alone because John Milius is not in such Good shape. If I had one wish this film would be Re-cut in the most extravagant brutal fashion.

David Lynch’s Dune is another interesting film that also has a lot of never before seen material and known cut material which we know Arrow wanted to get on to that extended cut but it has been refused full international release. The problem with that extended cut is very much Audio and Music Cue related but there is many scenes missing from the last 3rd of the film amongst the shoddy Audio in the Extended cut which would require a complete redux.

Finally I suppose I’d like to see any extra material from American werewoif in London although apparently the film OCN the outs and trims were destroyed yet Landis pulled some material out his Garage.

Another couple films I personally feel that could be worth a restoration effort is Tarzan the Legend of Greystoke there is a further 25 minutes of scenes of young Tarzan and the Rick Baker Ape puppets and is the Directors Preferred Version. They restored a lot of the Albert Whitlock Matte Paintings and the intro but it stopped there rather than the full directors cut.

I also heard about the very ending of Somewhere in time with Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour got a bit botched in the editing room and was shortened messing the music up too and the ending theme is not the correct version that was originally released for the credits theatrically.

The Champ the boxing film would also be definitely worth a HD restoration

I suppose it’s not a bad list there but nobody has seen the footage we only see pictures or heard about these. But they are real aside from the champ.

The Good the Bad the Ugly is one of those that although some of the footage has now been found it could do with voice mimicking from audio software to make that properly work as the dubbing is poor or non existent in English.

Hi there, I was wondering if you know how to remove ghosting artifacts. for my Ewoks droids adventure hour reconstruction I have one scene only available unaltered from a source with tons of ghosting.

Would you like to remove scratches from the single shot of the DSII blowing up in ROTJ? The current best version I’m aware of is from 4K83, but that shot has some scratches that weren’t able to be removed through automated cleanup due to the nature of the shot.
I use this in my ROTJ project and I think it’s the only shot I need that has scratches like that. Could certainly provide the shot if you’d be interested.

My stance on revising fan edits.
