Does anyone know about an app on Apple TV that plays .sup subtitles well?

You could try to install Kodi media player nightly(version 20), see https://kodi.tv/download/tvos (look under development builds) it has the capability to play external .sup files. I don’t know how stable this version of Kodi is and I don’t have an Apple tv.
