Harry Potter Extended Editions (Released) — Page 18

Hi JJ, first off great work on these projects (Lawdog too) As for the no-win situation I would say make a decision based on the format and file size you personally would prefer to release them in as they are your work and loads of people (myself included) appreciate the time and effort you guys put into these types of project as well as appreciating the end product.
My personal opinion is that h.265 for the smaller file size would be great (but then I may be biased as I can play these back without issue) but it certainly wouldn’t change my opinion that these are amazing fan edits if they were only released in a larger file size

So basically, I’m in a no-win situation. I’ve had people gripe and complain since I first released my edits about how big they are. I find a solution and now I have gripes about how everyone won’t be able to view them. At what point do I get to decide how I want to release them and not piss someone off?

JJPotter…

Here’s what I got to say about things. F’ck everyone and what they say. You do you, as you see fit. Period. You are the one who is putting in the effort and not a single person has any right or privilege to either complain or make “heavy handed” suggestions about how you present the results to the world. In fact, anyone who does doesn’t deserve to get the links that you provide. They complain about larger file size? Screw them. They should get faster Internet. What if they can’t get faster Internet. Not your problem as they are getting a vastly superior product for free that they spent absolutely no effort in creating. They want another encode? Screw them. They can use handbrake to re-encode to another format and adjust whatever compression/file size parameters they see fit. They are benefiting from your efforts and have no right to say anything about it whatsoever.

I have enjoyed your efforts before you took a break and appreciate the results immensely. I am definitely looking forward to your updates, but that does not give me the right to tell you how to present your work. Nor does it give anyone else the right either.

Thank you for your efforts. It is not fair for others to complain or make you feel pressured for doing what you enjoy and for allowing others to see the fruits of your labor. Please ignore anyone who complains and add them to a “NOT TO GIVE LINKS TO” list and move on.

No no no no. Whatever you do is fine. Your quality is excellent and it will be just fine. I was just mentioning pros/cons of things, but I don’t have any strong feelings.
I watch these on a home theater system with a 75" TV that handles HEVC just fine. I’m just used to people saying that the home encoders of the codec are still somewhat immature and people tend to overcompress thinking they work as well as commercial software.

I’m sorry if I sounded too critical now or before.

I don’t actually mind the large file sizes. It’s just that having them smaller would be helpful for storage sake.
However, I do really love the high quality, so having 10 GB file sizes is worth it for the good quality.

Ultimiatly though, JJ, you know best.
It’s your project, and we’re already grateful that you’re sharing it with us.

I think the smaller size movies idea is great! I do want that. Some editors, such as Hal900, have some of their movies in different formats (1080, 720, DVD) so that everyone can download the version they can fit in their blurays, DVDs or HDD, but if you can make a great quality one about 2GB, then I say “go for it”.

I would like smaller file sizes as I’m sure no one would mind. But that’s never been a priority. If you’re trying to pick and choose what to work on with limited time, I will always care more about the work. If you have tweaks to make or scenes to finish and add, I would always rather have that than smaller file sizes. I love your edits and just hope you continue to do great work.

@JJPotter, have you considered changing the first movie to ‘Philosopher’s Stone’?
I’ve always hated that they felt Americans were too stupid to want to read/watch a story that had the word Philosopher in it.

The links are not working
can you provide me the links please ?

I would say, if people can download a file, then they can get whatever they use to view the file to play a H265 file.

Amazing effort in putting these together. Thats a lot of work to serve many die hard HP fans like myself. Thank you

Has there been any progress in making the next releases multichannel? AAC 5.1 is still fairly small by comparison to other CODECS. I know there was some issue with getting the software to even output in stereo.

Are these older ones, or newer ones?

An update on the v2.0 edits…The main edits I’m concentrating on are PoA and DH 1 and 2, which all had scenes that needed to be keyed. The other movies will get a v2.0 update with a new warning screen at the start and h.265 encoding to make the files smaller as mentioned previously.

Deathly Hallows Part 1 is nearly complete. I was able to complete my draft version of the intro with the Dudley Redemption scene added and I am pleased with it. Waiting on some feedback on it first before showing it publicly.

For info on my HP edits, read the first post in the thread on OT.

Did you ask JJP before posting?

Trust me, that event continues to plague me, which is why on the preview of this new intro you will find a pretty good-sized watermark on it. I still find references to the guy that took my preview edits. They are still on YouTube and there isn’t much I can do about them. So I choose to move forward. I have enjoyed getting back into editing lately and I’m not going to let someone from the past take that away.

On that note, here is the new intro section that will be used on both Deathly Hallows Part 1 and the combined Deathly Hallows edit. The new intro includes the Dudley Redemption scene with green screens replaced. To accomplish this, I used Topaz Labs Video Enhance AI to upscale the footage to 4K and to smooth out some of the pixelation from the low res footage. This allowed for better masking of the green screen in some parts as well as allowing me to crop some of the green screen areas out completely.

I know that for some the intro will be way too long and the “flow” of it will have been broken by this addition. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, including whether to like this change or not. If you don’t like it, the current versions do not have this added in. To me, this scene is critical and should have never been cut. It had such an impact on me when I read the book the first time, so for v2.0 this scene will be there.

I also added sound effects when Hermione does the Obliviate spell as her pictures are removed from the frames. Some minor color tweaking was also done.

Good stuff, I say. 😃 Great work on “replacing” the green screen. My only comment would be that it (the Dudley Redemption scene) seems just a tad on the pink side (a switch from the greenish when we first see them all walking to the car); most noteably Harry’s face for the closer (first?) shot seems too toward magenta. Putting that mention aside, big thumbs up to your work on this!

The point of a fan edit project is for the editor to use whatever resources that are out there to create your vision of the film as it calls to you, make all the alterations that call to you. This opening is obviously where your heart and mind currently are with it, and it all feels well produced and seamless, so with those two check-boxes ticked, yeah, go for it, do this, it’s cool! Indeed, if people want an opening more like the theatrical or your previous version then those are already there.

Nicely done!

LightWave = fun times with gfx for me 😃

My friend, you just earned yourself a new subscriber. 😃

What’s the cinch on the bridge deleted scene from 7.2? I reckon it’ll take an experienced VFX editor in the field to get it looking just right to fit in the movie.
