Well, those shots have all already been done. And that’s okay, since you are far from the first person to submit that idea and I’ve declined to go with it.

Also, here’s the full conference scene, including “Captain Hux,” for everyone’s consideration.

Ooh that’s definitely an improvement. Imo not entirely sure if it’s 100 percent there yet but that might be a minority opinion.

So, what else would you like to do for V2, Hal? 😃

Really just the things indexed in the OP. I’m more of a mindset to achieve and lock in those things more than brainstorming new ones.

I’m really very pleased with how this whole thing turned out, y’know.

I like the idea of the captain Hux, but it sounds tacked on for me with headphones at least. Maybe the captain part is too loud? Or some of the background noise could be amped up some potentially.

The captain Hux line sounds perfect to me.

Since the conference scene is being brought up again, I mentioned this a couple times already, though quite some time ago… I still really feel that Pryde’s line about ‘conjuring star destroyers’ directly contradicts what this edit attempts to imply about the Final Order’s resources. If we want a hypothetical first time audience to believe these ships are a stashed remnant of the Empire, it seems weird not to cut it.

I agree, I think the music and ambience fade too quickly right before “Captain” and fade out completely right after “Hux”, making it seem almost like a comedic edit. Comparing to the original where the music fades out through the line.

Agreed. I wonder if it’s a problem with the pitch? Like, his voice should be lower on “Captain” and go up on “Hux”? Right now it’s the opposite - starting higher on “Captain” and jumping down on “Hux.” I wonder if a bit of autotune could (ironically) make that feel more natural.

Oh now that’s interesting. You could probably do a pretty simple trim just from “They sound like a cult, conjurers and soothsayers.”…“The Sith Fleet will increase our resources ten thousand fold.” The only potential problem would be covering up the cut, since there’s only a focus pull there now. There’s a shot in the BTS of some random officers at the conference table; although I think someone walks across the frame, so I’m not sure how much of that would actually be usable.

Seems unlikely due to the crackly saber which has a handful of sequences remaining.
I could put out a workprint that would be viewable, omitting changes that aren’t complete.

Honestly I think the wait is worth it, we all want whats best for the edit so it can be in the best shape possible.

Just going to chime in and say that I second this. I’d rather wait a bit longer and have a beautiful, fully-realized edit than spit out something half-finished. There’s always V1 to hold us over in the meantime; but I’m confident V2 (and Rey Nobody!) will be worth the wait.

I mustn’t be very good at picking up these things but to me it sounds flawless.

Sounds tacked on to me (but then again, I don’t like the change anyway… I think having a more generaly general above him is enough to get across that he’s not as high up in the hierarchy anymore…)

I’d say the line is juuust on this side of working convincingly. I appreciate the effort toward it, and I folded it in as well as I could. The original line is present in just about every channel and there wasn’t a lot of coverage to stitch into it, hence the dropout.

I was searching Reddit for posts of mine in order to relist download links and came across something nearly a year old in which someone tore through this project’s changelist to demonstrate how the author is reactive, doesn’t understand the film’s meaning, and essentially making the edit to complain. (I get why fan edits of SW put a poor taste into the mouths of some, I really do. And I could imagine such a change log reading that way if that’s what one assumes going in. On the other hand, if the original film had shown the Force ghosts and we worked hard to paint them out, I’m sure the conversation would be the same but merely inverted.)

Anyway, he raised one point that I think is useful to consider here. He said Poe doesn’t seem to respect or care about the Final Order fleet until Kijimi is destroyed. And that the civilian fleet has no reason to rally without this event.

Poe does seem to care, a great deal, so I’m not sure where that idea comes from. And the fleet arrives because… there’s more of them than the FO censorship has allowed to be apparent, and the legend of Skywalker has had time to have an effect compared to how the end of TLJ played out for the Resistance.

Eh, nevermind. Once again typing in this thread on my phone has functionally replaced walking or driving while thinking about these things. Ideally, any of these fan edits could be evaluated fresh, without assumption. But at the end of the day, the only target audience can be an alternate universe on opening night and not existing people who do or don’t want things to be different. A film that exists on its own, even if only hypothetically, rather than some sort of polemic.

That’s awful Hal, I’m sorry you had to read all that. I don’t understand how someone wouldn’t notice the time and effort that goes into things like this. As someone who lacks pretty much any kind of motivation I know how disheartening listening to this kind of stuff can be.

Honestly I’m so done with people online in general as of recently I feel like I need to just mentally check out until things blow over down here. This is really the last thing I needed to hear today.

Honestly, I see fan edits as the creative and better alternative to addressing a film and fixing it. It’s a much better option than to complain and whine online like the majority of the Internet does.

The only thing that I can say, Hal, is that, they simply don’t understand.

Are you sure that Reddit comment wasn’t from a recently banned member here, Hal? Lol. Just sounds like the sort of thing he might have said.

I wouldn’t sweat it. This project is the work of many passionate fans, and we have given plenty of thought to these changes. Plenty of ceaseless debates, I might add haha.

By the way, didn’t someone already do the crackly saber shots in the cave a long time ago in past thread pages? I’m sure they did, because I saw them on Vimeo nearly a year ago.

I believe MR did them but they didn’t turn out as well as he’d hoped. Something about the smoke effects or something.

I think someone else did too. I believe kewlfish did Rey’s training sequence, the underground caves on Pasaana, the encounter with Kylo Ren’s TIE fighter and pointing the saber at Zorii Bliss. I believe him or someone else also did the Force bond duel as well.

For what it’s worth, Hal, one of the things I most admire about this edit is that I think it really comes from a place of respecting (overall) what J.J. & Co. set out to do - it’s just trying to add to it and fix the execution of it. I remember a fan edit of TLJ where the editor completely gutted the movie, replaced half of Luke’s dialogue with his own (poorly dubbed) voice; it was obvious that he just absolutely hated TLJ and wanted to fundamentally remake the movie. Heck, even my own first attempt to edit this movie last year was me just stripping out every part I hated, and there was barely any movie left.

I think you’ve really produced a film here that’s the antithesis of that - an edit that’s additive, rather than destructive; and you’ve encouraged me to think of the film in a whole new light. Not “What do we want to remove,” but “What can we add or change to make it better?” To quote a now-removed line: “That’s how we’re gonna win. Not by fighting what we hate. But saving what we love.”

Anyway, I think if we can get Kijimi working, including that revamped Poe rooftop scene, I think that will help with Poe’s/the galaxy’s motivation for coming together at the end. After all, the whole point of that change is showing how they’re inspiring each other to stand fast. (I am still working on it, albeit slowly!)
