This is looking really nice!

It looks great and less artificial than the first one. Like the first one, it looks like a Death Star explosion.

It looks nice, but tbh I don’t understand why people don’t just stick with Adywan’s. It’s like the only one that shows where that asteroid field comes from

Not true. In this one, you can see little bits and pieces of rocks flying from the planet. Plus, Adywan’s is low quality.

I actually got the HD version of his shot, It was perfect except for the camera shake.
I tried to remove it with stabilization, but that didn’t work because there was to much motion blur.

It’s a little bit awesome to have two people at once working on impressive replacements for the Alderaan explosion (that don’t have Praxis rings). Just one bit of feedback comparing yours, Dat’s, the OOT, and the SE: I think your explosion goes too far from the planet too fast. The other three, the explosion hangs more tightly to the planet body. Yours looks fine the way it is, I am just zooming way in to pick nits and vet.

Why do people have a problem with Praxis rings? I think it gives the explosion more punch

Personally, the praxis ring effect from the SE is visually outdated and looks pretty bad when blown up to the size of a flatscreen TV. In fact the entire SE explosion as-is has alot of weird elements into it (I think they used a blood splatter overlay in place for planet debris) and lacks any sort of dynamic movement (although the movie itself is sort-of dynamically limited in cinematography)

Its good that you guys like it because Its the one I’m going to use.
I will be adding a slight pan to make it more dynamic, as DSG requested.
Also Hal, If you want I can send you a version of this explosion to match the 97SE, to put in your revised edit as well as R2’s flashes.

Very kind of you. How you mean “to match the 97SE,” though?

I really like both your and Dat’s current Alderaan explosions. Straight from using the 97SE to an embarrassment of riches.

I don’t loathe the Praxis ring, but what I don’t like is that every major explosion of a planetoid object in the OTSE has it. To me, one is fine but multiple gets weird. And personally, I feel the original Death Star explosion is the one to keep, since I’d feel a little weird going from the SE Battle of Yavin to the original explosion, though its probably just from conditioning.

I agree with the statement that the Death Star explosion should be the one that has the praxis ring as it has hones in the gravity of the situation, destroying the biggest evil thing in the galaxy. Having Alderaan have it first cheapens the effect and does add the monumental “oomph” the Death Star battle provides.

Okay the death star will have a ring. also by matching it to the 97SE I mean color correcting and Degraining it.

I always thought the same as G&G Fan regarding the praxis rings but after reading what Hal and Dat’s reason’s I see why. The rings should definitely be kept for the Death Star explosion 👍

Houston we have a problem.
So today I was removing all the lighsaber/explosion jumpcuts, It’s been going great except for one shot in the movie: the Ben hut ignition. I’ve been yanking my hair out trying to figure out a way to fix that, I’ve tried everything! how did Adywan do that one? all the other shots will be fixed except for this shot, But I will still fix threepio’s shift in that shot.

I recall Darth Editous handled that shot nicely, like a million years ago. I don’t have a soft copy of his edit to rip a clip from, though!
From what I can surmise, I think he morphed frames to cover the jerk in motion from the jump cut and animated the saber igniting.
