The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released) — Page 556

How does this sound? Don’t have access to computer atm.

Rey: I need to finish what Luke started. Find Exegol.

Leia: No. Too long…

Rey: I don’t want to go without your blessing but I will. I will. It’s what you would do.

One possible angle you could take with the Threepio mind-wipe is just playing it entirely for laughs. Finn has a line in that scene along the lines of “doesn’t R2 back up your memories?” and I’ve toyed around with just ending that shot there and cutting to the procedure. By using that line to suggest that the characters understand Threepio will be fine in the end and is only temporarily confused, and downplaying the other overly sentimental bits of Threepio’s ‘sacrifice’ while keeping his protestations and the relevant jokes, you can have one fewer weird fakeout emotionally-flat ‘death’ in this movie without losing memorable bits like ‘he’s my oldest friend!’ etc. It is a departure from what’s presumably intended to be a, uh, “traumatic” moment, but it’s not like that emotional beat lands anyway once you know he gets all his memories back a few scenes later.

@sade I thought Hal already removed the reference to R2 restoring his memories?

Sure, but it could be put back if a different approach was wanted (the idea is more of a drastic change than HAL tends to go for though). I confess I sometimes just post general ideas in this thread even if they’re not entirely in line with Ascendant.

I think the main problem with 3PO’s memory wipe is that the film itself doesn’t even know how it wants to play it. On one hand, they frame it as a touching farewell/sacrifice (“You know the odds better than any of us.”…“Taking one last look, sir, at my friends.”) But then every other moment, they turn it into a farce. (“I’ve just thought of something else we can try-”…“Whoever this Chewie person is, this is madness.”…“How dare you? We only just met!”

So half of the memory wipe stuff is dramatic, and half of it makes 3PO the butt of the joke; if we want to commit to a tone here, we’d basically have to cut half of the references to the memory wipe either way.

@sherlock I feel like dramatic stuff can work as being a sort of a joke. Look at the hyenas in The Lion King, for example.

Head mod unbanned me with another chance. I spent a lot of time on /r/saltierthancrait (former hater here!) and /r/saltierthankrayt.

I’m not sure how that is relevant to your attitude but try not to blow your rare second chance by constantly going up against people who actually care about this edit, ah!

You’ve made it clear several times that you don’t care about this cut so it’s really profound that you insist on constantly shitting on everyones posts and causing so much negativity. I’ve been away for a month and you’re still playing the same tune. Change the record, dude! It’s boring AF!

I agree with that thought, it was handled so … randomly. I am not sure what can be “realistically” done to help, asides from removing the actual dramatic stuff since throughout the movie the crew/movie treats him as a joke after that … so trim one dramatic thing or trim a bunch of joke stuff? Lol what a mess.

Though Hal’s approach to remove the memory backup does help maybe to actually HAVE stakes and is probably all that can be really done. I honestly think JJ thought “Hey let’s have at least this serious moment that’s undeserved, but the rest of it is a joke since we will restore his memory anyway.”

That’s a good observation, about that scene playing into Leia somehow knowing Rey’s parentage. I’m not sure removing it would help the film’s overly fast pacing, though, as you’d have to smash from “We must find Exegol” to the Falcon’s fuel thing being uncoupled in closeup.

That little scene does establish that Rey is following Luke’s journal which is important to understand.

Even without the idea that Leia “knows,” the scene shows Leia’s misgivings about the darkness and/or inexperience that Rey senses within herself and fears.

Proof-of-concept for how this scene could be cut down. I didn’t spend a lot of time on audio fades, but what do you think of this?

I almost think this works better with what you were saying about Leia’s worries - Leia now reacts to “I’m going to Exegol” (a Sith stronghold), rather than her reacting to “Bitch, don’t tell me what to do.” And you still get the exposition that Rey is following Luke’s notes.

I think that works pretty well. That bit always felt awkward, the way Leia says “no” just feels like “I wish I could explain myself but they didn’t have the footage”, and then Rey’s response “it’s what you would do, if you were sill with us”, which doesn’t even make sense since Leia never went on adventurous quests. With this edit we still get Leia’s look of concern without the awkwardness.

Burbin, I always thought that line was super meta and took my right out of the movie. Agreed.

EDIT: If you couldn’t tell, I support Sherlock’s clip. Obviously it just needs some audio work.

As much as I would be against cutting anymore of Leia’s dialogue, This works really well. Nice work Sherlock.

I mean, the only line being cut is “No”. So nothing lost, really.

Yeah that clip works so much better than what was in the movie, makes Leia seem like she’s there a little bit more than just pasted in with VFX.

I never said I hated all the edits in Ascendant. In fact, there’s a decent amount of 'em I actually agree with, but Hal did with what he’s had (as in, some would be executed better on script).

Who here would like to see Hal do some BTS footage for the edit? 😁

I don’t know what such footage would be. Boot into an old OS on an external drive, download stuff other people did and then drag and tuck it into a video editor that was end-of-life’d a decade ago.

I think that clip works surprisingly well, Sherlock. Where did you draw those extra couple lines from for Rey?

MR, I’ll thank you to avoid using autism as a slur. And Testing, I think things have run their course in this thread for you. Why not save it and leave a review of V2 someday? You aren’t contributing, and keeping people away from the thread who would.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Dang Sherlock … that clip works really well … and is a simple “fix.” Sometimes it’s the simple things. Good work mate.

I like it a lot, Sherlock.

Side note: would horizontally mirroring this scene break anything? The shots of Carrie are mirrored and I find it quite jarring; takes me out of the movie. Though I’d guess it’s not a big deal to anyone else.

But here’s a test: https://streamable.com/93t3fa

The only thing is that Rey flips the pages in the opposite direction (I have no problem with that though).

@jarjar Yeah, that’s like 10% of her dialogue. 😉

@Hal 100% not a slur. It was a genuine question. I’ve had a lot of experience with autism, hence why I say “so we can help you”.
