Joe Chill was the man who murdered Bruce Wayne's parents.

Dick's were murdered by Boss Zuco or something like that. As far as I knew, he sabotauged their trapeze gear and they fell to their deaths, but according to All Stars, the were shot in the head.

I will assume for the sake of canon that this new Miller/Lee Batman and Robin takes place in the DKR Universe.

See, I think Joe Chill is a bad idea. The Wayne murderer should be nameless and faceless, as Batman sees (subconciously at least) each criminal he fights and brings in as his parents' killer. That said, in the context of the 1989 film, Jack Napier being their murderer works. Not only does it make everything very theatrical, and establishes Batman's personal vendetta against the Joker that couldn't be developed in a 2 hour film the way it could in 50 years of comics. For that instance and that instance only, I think it was a good creative change. But what do I know, I'm one of the few people who likes "Batman" better than "Batman Begins."

Well, the movie was alright, but the fact he made Joker the killer of Tom and Martha... That was stuipd.

Making the Joker the killer worked, because remember most people seeing the film had never heard of Joe Chill or had any idea who killed Bruce Wayne's parents beyond some stick-up man. Joe Chill would of taken too much screen time, and as said before, more time to develop the Joker/Batman vendetta. So making the Joker the killer worked for the movie. Maybe not correct, but easier.

It was unnecessary to change the origin story. The Joker could have been a psycho in the movie without having killed Wayne's parents. The Joe Chill angle only goes as far as his origin...his parent's death is the motivating factor, not the person who pulled the trigger. This is like having Ras al' Ghul kill his parents in the latest movie. They just don't need to do it to make the bad guy "bad". IMO, leave 50 or so years of history alone.

Well, you could say the same thing to the mind jobs that run DC. Remember after Zero Hour, they retconned the origin to say that the killer had never been caught. Still, that was well after the 89 flick, so Burton had no excuse.

image comics does the walking dead. if your go to your neighborhood bookstore, they have the first graphic novel available. very highly recommended.

I guess they wanted the 1989 movie to have a feeling of finality and closure, i.e. - hero destroys villain and for reason. Of course, the problem with that is that if Batman were to nail his parents killer - Joe Chill - he'd probably lose his motivation to be Batman, which was supposed to be a plot point in Batman Returns but didn't quite come through.

what I've had a problem with, is that batman seems to have to kill every villian in every movie just so their can be "closure". It goes against the character's morals in the comic to do this. Of course, he didn't kill edward nigma in forever so...

Yeah. Was I the only one who thought that the Batwing in the film having real machine guns (and those definitely weren't rubber bullets) was a bit... Out of character?

Now that you mention it... it does seem a little strange, but I think he was granted such weapons in the Bat-Plane for the comic books.

To be fair i dont think he actually killed any of the villians.

Joker - he was gonna kill him but didnt, joker ended up dying when trying to pull batman off the ledge with him.
Penguin - cant quite remember how he died, but think it was a similar situation to the joker.
Catwoman - has 9 lives, iirc they showed her at the end so she was still alive
Two Face - fell while reaching for his coin. his own fault, batman's intentions were to distract him so he could save himself and the others.
Riddler - was put in Arkym (sp?) asylum
Poison Ivy - put in Arkym
Freeze - put in Arkym
Bane - probably put in Arkym, dont think they showed this, but he was just released of the venom, he wasnt killed.

*edit* all i remember for the Penguin's death is him floating in the river and the penguins around him. i think they 'put him out to sea'. how exactly did he die?

penguin died by toxic waste in the water. he fell in and died that way. have to watch it again. And Bats did kill Joker in the first one. He threw that bolla that attached joker's ankle to a statue. Joker couldn't hold on so he fell to his death.
