Yeah, I could have done that I guess. Maybe Luke is just wishing his friend from Tatooine was there to save him

What still annoys me is that I wasn't able to save the shot of Luke walking under his X-Wing's wing.

Thank you Darth Editous..... there has obviously been a lot of effort put into this and Im most grateful someone has done this (only 5 more films to go..)

..... but a big thank you for doing what Lucasfilm should have done and have had no excuse not to have done with the financial resources they have at hand!!!.

Thank you Hotrod for being so generous and sending this to me! To pay it forward if anyone would like a copy in the UK then PM me and I will send one out to the first person to reply.

This is possibly the best version of a Star Wars edit so far, some of the issues that have been fixed I wasnt even aware of the first time round, some of the tweaks are inspired and removing the infantile nonsense put in for the DVD releases is frankly a relief...I can watch the film again without cringing every so often at the unecessary changes that were made to what was a good film...

One question for Darth Editous..... and is probably mine (and one hundred million other peoples) most significant gripe with the recent DVD version, when Greedo shoots first was there anyway of removing the poorly CGI'ed version of Han Solo, it does stick out like a sore thumb and is so poor its almost laughable????

Once again no complaints and thanks for a great release.

Do you just mean the general shot of him and Greedo at the table as they fire? I never thought of Han as being CGI in that scene... or did you just mean the unrealistic dodge? Because that's gone from my edit.

I kept the shot in because the scene is much clearer with it included. In the OT, you see Han reach for his gun, then there's more conversation, then Greedo explodes, apparently for no reason.

Gotta say, the only odd edit is the fade transition that excises the Jabba scene. other than that, pretty much everything was seamless, although in some shots, it looked like Ben's saber was purplish instead of blue. And I wish the Greedo subs would have been completely in the picture, but that's just a personal nitpick, because I have a projector and I matte out the black bars on 2.35 movies, so half the subtitle ends up looking out of focus and really gray. but that's not even going to be a problem for like, 99 percent of the people watching this thing Other than that--this is a really damn good job, and possibly one of the best "Fan edits" I've seen.

Yeah, I admit that's not perfect! But I wanted to keep to the same number of frames as the OT, which meant slowing down the A side and reconstructing a few frames on the B side. The OT transition is fairly wonky musicwise anyway.

although in some shots, it looked like Ben's saber was purplish instead of blue.

If I remember rightly, I only painted in the lightsabre in a handful of frames, so that could just been down to the DVD's reportedly poor colouring.

Great release Editous. You really did a great job on the disc. This is the set (once the other 2 movies are released) I want to watch on my big screen TV and surround system. A couple questions and one thing I did notice, not sure if it's been talked about or not. If it has, sorry for the reposts on my questions.

1. When 3PO and R2D2 are walking through the hallway in the opening scene and the other droid is behind them, on 3PO's right leg (below the knee) you see a different color then the rest of the gold on his body. It more matches the droid's color behind him, not the gold color 3PO has. Was that intentional, always been there (and I never noticed), or a mixup?

2. How is work coming along on Empire and Jedi? Any time frame for their release?

3. Is it possible for someone to torrent this if they have the means?

Can't wait for the set to be completed.

Sorry, I should add, it's always been silver in the OT...not Sith!!

Thanks for clearing that up. I knew something wasn't right, but I must have been thinking of him from the Ep III (& in part might not have noticed it before). Thanks.

Hi Darth Editous

Ive posted a pic of the offending Lucas edit, basically this shot is in the SE but is not in the orginal film, I guess Lucas wanted to show Greedo firing first so had to insert this into the film to allow more time for the laser from Greedos gun.

If you check any Laserdisc rip then you will find that this scene isnt in the original! You never see either person fire, just a flash of smoke and then Greedos head fall on the table. I think that works better as its clear Han did the shooting because he reached for his gun...I was eight when I watched it orginally and figured that out pretty easily so personally dont think it needs this extra shot (although glad the head dodge has gone!)

The CGI Han looks very very very fake..............

Fake Han Solo Special Edition Shot

Especially in comparison to the very next shot following Greedo hitting the table it does stick out like a sore thumb!

The next shot of a real Han Solo

I'd love the above CGI Han to be edited out and put back to how the orginal film was as its really irratating, Lucasfilm really messed with this scene. Apologies to anyone who hadnt noticed.

While I too prefer the original edit, I'm pretty sure that Han isn't CGI in the new shot, but instead a previously unused shot that was then digitally manipulated to make him move (which DE has removed from his edit). A couple of reasons why I think this, first it would take a lot longer and cost a lot more to do it the CGI way because the alternative is so simple. While making CGI body doubles isn't too hard these days, it would have been very difficult then, plus they didn't have the actual actor to scan or base work off (as Harrison Ford looked completely different by then), only 2D imagery. Secondly, Han would of had much more realistic dodge movement if he was all CGI!

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.
Everything is better on a laserdisc. Whatever happened to the laserdisc? Laserdisc!

Yeah, that's not CGI. That's a separate angle from an alternate take. It was manipulated with CG, yes, but the frame you're holding up as a CG model is, in fact, a picture of Harrison Ford.

By the way, this totally precludes you from ever criticizing CGI again, since you mistook a living human being for a "very very very very fake" Computer Generated Image.

See, this is why I don't take too much CGI criticism too seriously--the people criticizing have a hard time actually discerning between models, computer images, and even actual humans. Which, I think, speaks more to the SUCCESS of the tool than the failure of it.

I think its obvious to most people whats computer generated and what isnt!, Han Solos head is CGI the rest of the scene content may not be (only Lucasfilm know the answer!) but I dont think due care and attention was used in adding these extra few seconds to extend this scene and I believe the changes stand out.

If we are being picky, its CGI "manipulated" then! , primarily because Han Solos face looks unreal i.e. like hes wearing a rubber mask.

Its still quite obvious that it doesnt fit with the next shot, speculating about the cost of CGI work is a bit pointless and even if its an alternate take its irrelevant the simple facts are:

1) It is a new SE addition and not in the original
2) It looks fake
3) Looks very different from the following shot

Anyway Darth Editous decided to keep it in so its up to him, I wouldnt know how to take it out but if he ever returns to Star Wars again then maybe he could shorten it so this scene is back to what it is in the orginal. The rest of his changes are superb.

Superb they are. On that same note, here are some clips I made from this edit, which include my absolute favorite fixes DE has made. If you're a lurker and wondering why you should want this set, I have a proposal. Put in the 2004 dvds, and skip to the part where luke's training on the falcon.

Watch that scene side by side with these clips:
You don't believe in the force, do you...

How am I supposed to fight?

My jaw dropped after seeing this. I once had to 'force' myself to blink during the frame jumps so it wouldn't stand out as much or at all. Now I don't have to. Thanks DE.

Greetings, kids. First time poster here....

I just wanted to covey a hearty "Bravo" to Darth Editous, and all the others, who are taking the time and effort to restore the original trilogy to it's former glory(and making much needed fixes that the geniuses at Lucasfilm and ILM consistently keep missing or ignoring altogether). It amazes me what a bunch of dedicated fans , who seemingly understand Lucas' original creations ten times better than he or any of his cronies do, can accomplish with a little knowledge, a little work and a whole lot of love for what Star Wars used to mean. The results seem to be spectacular.

It's very heartening to know that there is a network of fans out there who won't stand for wildly innappropriate, badly executed, prequel validating crap being shoehorned into the original three films we know and love.

I salute you.

P.S. Wesyeed, your last post made me laugh out loud, with the bit about "blinking" so as to not have your vision assaulted by certain embarrassing errors. I thought I was the only one who did that.

Speaking of PMs, I still get the occasional one asking for copies, but I'm not sending any out right now - besides, I like how this whole paying-it-forward thing is working And my PMs are still overflowing, which is why I haven't replied if you PM'd me.

So if you have a copy and would like to pay-it-forward, please post here or PM a requester if you can help them out.

I'm getting my copy of the NTSC copy pretty soon (THANKS SO MUCH INFODROID!), and I gotta say, I'm REALLY impressed with this. This looks so great, and like a poster said a few pages ago,
This is the version I WILL put into my DVD player when I want to watch star wars.
Amen to that!

But I do have to ask... PLEASE DO ESB AND ROTJ!!
Oh, I was wondering, although this is'nt exactly "preserveing" the O-OT....if you could add you'r own voice to the Stormies to make them sound like AOTC and ROTS clones...
that must be too much to ask for. lol. Mabe I'll do that my self.
Of cource I'll be useing your DVD.
I was wondering, why dont you put your name in the credits!?
Mabe as the first name durring the final credits...
or you know how when the fanfare (fox) plays theres a seconed ot two of blackness? why dont you add your name to that, then fade to black (really quick) and then to the Fox logo?
It would be great to see!
As my last note,
PLEASE DO ESB AND ROTJ!
And will you becoming out with a bonus disc of how you edited the single best movie of all time? Complete with how you added the effects?
Or mabe a DVD that shows a JPEG comparison of the shots in the original, DVD, and your version!
Mabe a slide show, for EVERY SINGLE THING you fixed!
That would be great!
