My 4K AI processed/upscale of Harmy's Star Wars Despecialized 2.7 (Released)

So I’m new here and not sure exactly what works or doesn’t on these posts. I recently ran the 2.7 version of Star Wars Despecialized through Topaz AI software to see the outcome and had it upscale/uprez to 4K.

It turned out pretty good except there is a lot of noise/film grain.

The thing is, I’m not sure I can share the file link here if anybody wants it or not? It’s a big file at 44 gigs. Basically it has all the audio options etc as the original one but just at a 4K resolution. I noticed a few people on posts ask for a 4K version and so far this is the closest thing.

I could use an 1080p upscale of Adywan’s ‘Star Wars:ANH-Revisited’. It was released in 720p.

Although Adywan said that he’ll resume work on this next month, who knows when he’ll be finished. You know how these project owners are: It will be finished when it’s finished.

ANH: Revisited wasn’t released in 720p, that’s still only in standard def (720x576 since Ady worked from PAL sources). Unless you’re talking about a 720p upscale, in which case you’d be better off going back to the PAL DVD9 and upscaling from that (adjusting the framerate from 25fps to 23.976fps and taking the 5.1 audio from the NTSC DVD9) as opposed to upscaling a 720p upscale a second time.

Yeah, the whole point of Ady redoing ANH is to make it 720p. 😉

It’s still strange to me that he’s redoing the entire thing to bump it up from 576p to 720p in an era when 2160p sources are available.

That is a little strange. I’m very new to the fan edit world of this. I love both Star Wars and Star Trek and I just completed my project to upscale Star Trek Voyager and was looking online and stumbled on Harmy’s and saw several people at different sources asking for his 4K version. So I figured why not try an AI upscale of it.

I’m just discovering there are a ton of other edits etc out and it’s pretty fascinating now to learn of these and also know that there is a way to see the move how I first saw it in theaters back when it was released. I truly never thought I’d see a good copy of the originals ever again. And if I could I’d thank all involved.

To my understanding, it comes down to resources and rendering times. He does alot of modification to those films, and they take forever to render even just at 720p. 2160p would be just insane.

He discusses a few things in this post from 2012. Now that 4K77/83 exist, the 2006 bonus discs are no longer an issue, and I imagine whatever PC Ady has nowadays is perfectly capable of 1080p compositing. I guess at this point it’s mostly to keep things consistent with ESB:R, especially since AFAIK Ady’s still using the 2011 Bluray sources rather than the recent 4K releases, which are lower detail and so don’t take as much of a hit by being downscaled. Anyway, none of this is relevant to the thread, apologies.

I second this but of course, regarding ESB:R which actually is in 720p.

Adywan does some sweet sorcery, but its getting harder and harder to take any improvement in HD over the sharpness and detail of (even downscaled) UHD or 4kxx.

So an AI upscale of it would be the bomb. Been seeing lots of these things around and some are really impressive.

I’m interested in this project! I’m curious how it looks / turned out

How prominent is the noise/grain with the upscale? Would you say it’s visually distracting? I was looking up the Topaz AI program, and the results seem impressive, so I was thinking of buying the software myself to upscale some of my old DVDs. Would you recommend it?

But we can’t turn back. Fear is their greatest defense. I doubt if the actual security there is any greater than it was on Aquilae or Sullust. And what there is is most likely directed towards a large-scale assault.

Do you think you could upload a sample?

could you possibly do empire strikes back as it is the only movie without a good despecialization. if it was upscaled to 4k it would be the closest thing to 4k80/despecialized 3.0
