Other altered works

Okay, we all know about Star Wars (obviously). Some of you have also mentioned Tolkien's changes to "The Hobbit" (which actually happened by accident, and he decided to let it stick). What other works do you know of which had been altered by the creator, following the initial release?

I seem to recall having heard that Alexandre Dumas revised The Three Musketeers several times after it was first published (as a serial in a French magazine).

The video games Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II have been revised as well. The most notable of which is the recent "Dawn of Souls" release, which makes notable changes to the core gameplay of the original Final Fantasy.

And while we're talking video games... let's not forget Street Fighter II.

Robert Wise really screwed up with his director's edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Disney's Fantasia.
E.T. (the Collector's set was the only way to get the unaltered version...for $80)

He made changes to the Riddles in the dark scene so that his charaterizations of Gollum would fit into how he characterized him in LOTR.

would you consider a movie altered if the US release of it is cut because certain scenes are deemed inappropriate by stupid conservative groups?

As far as DVD releases go, I would like the theatrical versions of Blade Runner, Last of the Mohicans, and the Blues Brothers. While I prefer the director's cut of Blade Runner, I think the theatrical version would be cool to have as well. The theatrical versions of the other two are better than the director's cuts. Once I get a new computer I'm going to edit the Blues Brothers back to the theatrical cut.

Video games don't really fall under the same category. I mean, you've got games like Street Fighter 2 in which there were several games released under that title (SF2, SF2CE, SF2T, SSF2, SSF2T... etc) and then after that, you've got different versions per platform... Arcade, PC, SNES, MegaDrive (Genesis), etc. You have games that were released with better graphics - King's Quest V, Monkey Island 1 PC, Super Mario Bros 1-3 SNES.

It is unlikely you can consider such games altered, since on their original platforms in their original versions, they were never altered. And remember that not all games came initially on only one platform, so there would never be a truly "pure" version of that game.

Yeah. Can you imagine chronicling all the games with more than one version!?

What about THX=1138.. It has it's own special edition.
And It's a LUCAS film at that...

The original version of ET was available in the standard 2-disc set that I picked up for $20. I'm fairly sure that the guns and "terrorist" line were restored.

Fantasia:
I keep reading that every edition of the movie, excluding its original Theatrical release, had some minor alterations in the Centaur scenes.

E.T.:
I bought the $80, but I've long watched it once. I'm pretty sure that its unaltered.
Rev. Beastly: To my knowledge, no edition of the movie except the $80 was released that had guns and terrorists.

Am I wrong in that the 1982 edition featured on this set is the original version, without the 2002 changes?

I don't know now.

I thought there were 2 versions:
1982 and 2002.
2002 had some added scenes, a CG ET and the Politically Correct content.

Perhaps there are 3 versions:
1982
1982a- Altered to a politically correct state, but missing the additional scenes and CG of the 2002 edition
2002

I'm fairly certain that there are only the two versions and that the 1982 version on that set is the original version-- complete with guns and the "terrorists" line. Here's a snippet from Amazon's editorial write-up.

Universal pulled a fast one when they placed both the 1982 and 2002 versions of E.T. on this standard DVD release. The result is an excellent two-disc set that contains nearly all of the material on the higher-priced ultimate edition (minus the handsome packaging).

The international version, which is actually Titled Leon: The Professional, as apposed to The Professional is 10 times better than the US release. I actually always (try to) buy the best dvd available at the time i get a movie. so i had never seen this version before i bought it but since it was uncut and had i think 14 more minutes i got this version.

anyway, there are some scenes probably a little more than half way through where Leon is teaching Matilda how to be a 'cleaner' and the actually go on some 'jobs'

def worth checking out if you havent seen it, especially if you liked the US version

In cases where he has gone back and altered his films, Ridley Scott has always made a decent effort to ensure that both versions are available. The only exception that comes to mind is Blade Runner, but that is because of the actions of Jerry Perenchio, who controls the rights to the film.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.
