You know, there is something I'm starting to hate about what Star Wars has become.

One of my friends recently told me a story about how he tried to join a Star Wars MUD, but they wouldn't accept the character he submitted "didn't have a Star Wars-y name."

He, of course, didn't like this, but neither do I--in the EU or practically any other Star Wars spinoff, or even in the Prequels, Star Wars seems to have become over-populated by people with silly names, such as Qui-Gon Jinn or Aayla Secura or Jar Jar Binks.

But lets look at the original movies. The main character was named, of all things, Luke Skywalker--a perfectly ordinary Earth name (save for maybe the Skywalker part, but those kind of surnames are a fantasy convention). He knows an old man named Obi-Wan Kenobi (a name, obviously, meant to sound oriental in origin), meets a smuggler named Han Solo (Han is a real name) and a princess named Leia Organa (Leia being, of course, a variation of "Lee-Ann" and Organa being Morgana without the M). His enemy is named Darth Vader (Dark Invader, obviously). These names, obviously, reflected some sort of meaning or detail and showed us Lucas' inspiration. Names like "Qui-Gon Jinn" are made up at random and their whole purpose is to sound weird and sci-fi-ish.

Where the hell did the Star Wars universe come to be about people with whacky, generic Sci-Fi names?

What about Chewbacca? Lando Calrissian? Lobot? Palpatine? Those aren't exactly earthish names.

AND. The name "storm troopers." That sure isn't original. It comes from the Nazis. It was Hitlers secret service as he was coming into power. Wierd, eh?
I just hate stupid people.

Emperor Palpatine, last name. Chewbacca, nick-named chewie, like dogs who teeth or have chew-toys. Lobot-robot (i have no clue who he is) Lando? He's basically like a foreigner whe would have an odd name (I say foreigner because the is no other balck person on the OT.)

Chewbacca isn't unusual. To me it sounds like a twisting of the phrase "Chew Tobacco." And as someone else pointed out it's usually shortened into "Chewie." Finally, he's a wookiee, he SHOULDN'T have a name that's too ordinary.

Well, I know for a fact that RANDO is a real name (just watch MST3K: The Movie), and Lando is just Rando with an L. Calrissan? A mispronouncing of Carlson.

Who the hell is Lobot?

Palpatine you have a point on. It could be meant to sound foreign. And yea, it is a surname.

Sorry.

Lobot is the cyborg that Lando contacts in ESB... the guy with the metal ear.

I always thought Lobot was short for Lobotomy or robot, considering the cyborg headpiece he has attached to his skull,

Im pretty sure Qui-Gonn is a budhist term for energy or 'force', and I believe Darth Vader loosely translated in dutch means Dark Father

Lobot, he's a lobotomic robot!

Yes, the amazing RANDO!

One question: perhaps skywalker is a name translated from Basic?

But "basic" is the same as English, which makes no sense.

Some rock "Chewers" remind Leia of "Chewie" (Chewbacca, RIP)

"Drones" drone on and on in a monotone voice. It's not a joke in any langueage except basic, thinks Nom Anor.

I thought Basic was some hypothetical language spoken at the SW universe, and that language was translated to english by the films and books.

In otherwords, the imaginations of the public have gone dow nthe drain so that simple names like those in the OT just won't cut it nemore. The people need to think that the characters are outlandish & such, and the only way lucas can seem to do that is by having funny names that just scream "I'M FROM ANOTHER PLANET!!!"

James, Darth Vader is actually, I wanna say Dutch, for Dark Father. That is the literal translation. Works even better than Dark Invader.

For those wondering about Lobot, yes, he is somewhat cybernetic so the Lobot=Robot thing works as Buddy states in another post.

Lando... Orlando is a name that I've seen several times and Lando could be a derivation thereof. Orlando Jones and Orlando Bloom the actors. And, of course, the city of Orlando in Florida. Maybe Lucas had an affinity for Disney World when he named the character.

Cool thread, James.

You mean, names like "McG" and "Cher"?

Maybe he should have been called Lando Solo.

*wonders how we will ever have an integrated society if we constantly call them "black" people*

Let's see. Can we think of anything for Mon Mothma and Admiral Ackbar?

I know this may be reaching for Ackbar, but the name Barack (shifting "ack" to the end) is a real name. In fact, Barack Obama is running for U.S. Senate here in Illinois (and will win easily over that carpetbagging Alan Keyes).

Can't believe I missed this...

"James, Darth Vader is actually, I wanna say Dutch, for Dark Father. That is the literal translation."

I wish people would stop repeating this nonsense. It never referred to or meant this in any way, shape or form.

Vader is dutch for Father, but "Darth" doesn't mean anything.

It doesn't matter - Vader wasn't given his name due to becoming Luke's father.

Never said it had anything to do with that. It is just a cool tidbit considering the way the story did go.

I know, I just tired of seeing this dumb rumor come up again and again. I'm waiting for someone to say that "Darth" is short for "DARk Lords of the SiTH".
