On an unrelated note, I was wondering how other people felt about the film’s dedication “For Autumn” with regard to fan edits. On one hand, it might be disrespectful to remove it. But on the other hand, it’s meant to be a message directly from Zack Snyder, so once we as fan editors have altered the movie from what he wanted, one could argue that it would be unethical to leave it in. What are your thoughts?

I kept it in my edit and used an instrumental version of Hallelujah for the end credits. Keep it classy San Diego.

I prefer films in their original aspect ratio, and would like help finding an edit that preserves the 1.33:1 ratio.

Haven’t seen any good one JL edit which does that yet.

The 2.35 for me feels too cropped .

Out of curiosity - have you watched ZSJL in that format? I mean re-framed shot by shot.

I watch it either the way director intended (4:3), or the way I like (2.35:1 or something close to it - which looks pretty good, maybe except couple of shots here and there). All three ZSJL edits I made are 2.31:1.
I’ve reframed also first Avengers - in that kind of movies there’s no place for 1.78:1.

Couldn’t care less for Snyder’s philosophy which he made up suddenly after doing Watchmen, MoS and BvS in 2.35:1.

it is possible to change your philosophy after some time. I’m sure if he had this mindset back then he would’ve had a more vertical frame. And yes I did see a version of the trailer with the 2.35 ratio and honestly it just didn’t work for me. Like I said it just felt too cropped in. 1.66 is still my personal choice.

If Zack really did change his philosophy, he did it after he filmed 90+% of the Justice League, because the majority of his footage was clearly shot with the intent to letterbox it, probably to a theatrical 2.39 (same as BvS). The brand new VFX shots were, however, made with the intent for open matte. So his change in philosophy probably had more to do with getting this release out the door quickly than suddenly deciding that 4:3 open matte is the wave of the future. The fact that they put Batman’s voice SFX onto Aquaman by accident shows this was kind of a rush job.

Oh yeah the film wasn’t meant to have a non Imax release in 4:3. Snyder has said he wanted the film in 1.85 for all other releases but since he wanted to give his fans the full Snyder Cut experience he went ahead and included the 4:3 for the HBO Max release. The 4:3 is less of a “rush job” and more just him trying to please his fans. Whether it was worth it is up to debate. For me I think he should’ve made it an Imax only thing and made the other releases 1.66 or 1.85.

Speaking of, I think if I ever get to my own cut, I’ll go back to an old idea, and basically look at the Josstice Leauge cut. Cut out all the cringe, and then insert the best of the Snyder Cut, and then crop it to either 1.66 or 1.85 and with an optional 4:3 version.

Didn’t ask about seeing a trailer.

I went ahead and watched it and honestly is still doesn’t work for me. It feels way too zoomed in. Maybe it’s cause I’ve seen the 4:3 version but just not digging this look. And I’ll be honest ever since reading what Snyder said it has made me feel like comic book films should use a more vertical frame more often like 1.85 to really highlight the power of these heros similar to that of a splash panel in a comic book.

To add onto the aspect ratio debate, I think going 2.35 is not the way to go and it crops out things way too much IMO. If someone was going to crop it fit in more with the other film in Snyder’s trilogy, I would say just making it 1.85 is the best bet.

We should end the debate and start watching movies in triangle shapes

If I want it to fit with other movies I reframe to the AR of other movies (or something very close to it). Otherwise I don’t reframe at all.

Not to get off topic but where does this happen in the film? I’ve tried looking it up but nothing comes up. I even looked under the Goofs section on IMDb and it didn’t have anything on there about this.

It’s some time after Superman is resurrected. I think the League was all together indoors. And a couple words of one of Aquaman’s lines accidentally got the Batman SFX. I deleted he line, sorry I don’t remember it.
