What is your favorite film of the six?

Author
Time
Now that all six films are out, I thought that, in light of the "favorite moments" thread, I would create this thread, which yhas been discussed many times in other sites, but hasn't had an official thread here before.

ESB -- it did everything right; suspense, foreshadowing, adventure, revelation.... it did it all and then some.

Star Wars- A New Hope cant think of a better way to spend two hours. for me it has it all, not the most in depth story, but is so much fun to watch..

Empire second.

My vote goes to ROTS, looking at the saga as a whole. Sith was obviously the most tragic, and moving of them all. Despite the dialogue and CG, when you get down to it, this movie was the most moving of them all.

The Empire Strikes Back for me. As a kid and even now, when I watch the trilogy, my excitement builds and peaks at Empire. The action is more intense. The story darker. The suspense... suspenseful. Star Wars comes in at a close second because it's just so classic, timeless, and mythologically based. Then I'd have Return of the Jedi. In watching the trilogy, my excitement always started to wane a little bit at this time, but it still kicks ass with the Luke/Vader relationship, and Lando flying out of the Death Star trench. Then I guess the prequel trilogy would go in reverse. So my list is
ESB
SW
ROTJ
ROTS
AOTC
TPM

And AWK, I have no problem with your favorite movie being Sith, but "despite... CG"? How many times have you said that you love CG, and that it's better than its predecessors and how you want a digital Yoda in the original trilogy? I have nothing against your views, but could you please state exactly what those views are and stick with them?

In making the remark about CG, it was meant to mean to CG haters that that is not the reason I like that movie. I meant in that that I can get past the CG and the dialogue, and see the movie for what it really is.

BTW, why must everyone call ANH SW? I can't stand that! No offense.

Okay, that makes some sense. Thanks.

And, actually, I don't think many people, even here, refer to Star Wars as Star Wars anymore, so I don't see how you'd be hearing it or reading it all the time. I call it that because... well, that's its original title. Sorry if that bothers you, but that's just what I'm going to keep calling it.

I see, you must have saw the original special editions of the OT first, then. Myself, I saw TPM before any of the others, so it annoyed me to hear that anyone would call ep4 something that sounds all-encompassing.

Without a doubt the best film is the original 1977 Star Wars.

ESB is a distant second.

The rest are in a galaxy far, far away.

Well, I own the originals (the THX Faces set) if that's what you mean, which I first saw when I was nine (my Star Wars tenth anniversary coming up this Christmas!). I also own the special editions, but they thankfully weren't my introduction to Star Wars.

So, Gaffer Tape, do you think the general OT purist audience is starting to accept ROTS as part of their, uh, "holy trilogy?" Well, then it would be a quadrilogy, but, you know. I know that TPM and AOTC will never be part of it, but...

I've read a lot of posts by people here who consider their own perfect trilogy to be Sith, Star Wars, and Empire. I can't really speak for anybody other than myself. And I thought Sith was pretty good (although I enjoyed it much less the second time when I brought out my more critical eye), but... Well, when I own all six, I might watch I-VI just once in that order, but my usual viewing would (and has been) to watch just the original trilogy or to watch the OT followed by the PT. I personally will always have that dividing line. I couldn't make sense out of the Sith, Star Wars, and Empire trilogy because they simply don't belong together in my opinion. The original trilogy tells one story, and the prequel trilogy tells another story that tries to explain the events in the original trilogy's story. That's how I view it, so I don't think it's possible for me to mesh them together, especially by taking 1/3 of one story and 2/3 of another story and trying to mix them together.

I thought it might be something like that. I've heard the ROTS-ANH-ESB preference before as well. Personally, I sorta feel that way. My least favorite of the six is ROTJ becuase of the long period on Tatooine and the Ewoks instead of wookiees. The tatooine stuff seemed it should have been a much smaller amount of time than it was, and the other stuff should have been a little more expanded. I mean, the movie certainly serves its purpose and ties up all loose ends, but, it could have been executed and planned much better than it was. It was a satisfying conclusion overall, but was, like other say, too weak at some points and unbalanced.

This thread is an interesting way for me to find what the average preferance is among, um, for the most part, purist star wars fans. So far it's:

ESB
ANH
ROTS
ROTJ
AOTC
TPM

I agree with that soooo much. I don't think there's a better way to put it. Watching Star Wars was a defining moment for me, and if it was the only Star Wars movie ever, it would be the greatest film ever created IMHO. But because Empire came into existence (which completely blew me away), it is in my opinion the greatest film ever created, and that's not to detract from the original. Return of the Jedi, I still love, despite peoples' apparent dislike of Ewoks...

In my ideal viewing, I'd probably watch ANH, ESB, ROTJ, and then ROTS if I felt like it. I can only stand to watch TPM and AOTC one at a time, every so often...

Here's why Star Wars '77 is the perfect movie.

The pacing is text-book. It never gets the credit is deserves for its' screenplay. You could set a watch to that thing. It follows the classical story-telling arc perfectly. Everything works with it. You don't even need 'Empire' or 'Jedi' to make it more perfect.

Any screenwriter worth their salt will tell you that you basically have ten pages to hook the reader, and ultimately the viewer. Star Wars '77 does it in the first two pages.

There's never a dull moment in it. Now, the '97 SE/04 DVD completely destroyed the pacing - the Jabba scene throws it off, as does the Bigg's scene.

You know, why the hell can't Lucas release a version of the film where you can have the option to watch it with or without the additions? I'm happy to have the fan preservation sets, so it wouldn't even bug me if the 'official '77 Star Wars' had the CGI effects - so long as the edit was the same as the original.

Maybe with HD-DVD or Blue-Ray (whichever wins out) we'll finally get that option. If Star Wars taught me anything it's that optimism wins out...

Well,
SW-I can watch over and over again.
ESB-Both versions (SE and OOT, theres really no diffrence) are great.
ROTS-To me its like Star Wars, classic film, everythings great.
TPM-Battle scenes, Obi-wan kicks ass when young, the Duel, its all good
ROTJ-The O-OT version is good, the SE is alittle better in my book, because the ending. Read my post in the SE VS OOT fourm about ROTJ ending.
ATOC-Its ALRIGHT, but its not the best.

^ Yeah, as much as I hate to admit it, the song at the end of the 'Jedi SE' is more moving than Yub-Yub. Naw, screw that. Nothing is as moving as Yub Yub. If the Beatles had a time machine and went into the future and recorded Yub Yub and put it on the White Album, that would have been a slice of deep fried gold.
