The theater I go to is doing private theater showings where you can bring your own Blu-Ray and they’ll play it for you and up to 25 people. I think I’m going to bring 4K77 one of these days.

What? Nobody wants to see that.

If you don’t mind my asking, what theater is this?

I’m talking to my local theater about doing that, actually. Covid permitting, and my and whoever else having the moolah permitting.

Only if it has Obi-Wan’s yell from the 2011 SE.

“Star Wars has, and will always be a restaurant.”

Once things get back to normal, I’d love for them to re-release ALL of the Star Wars movies in the theater again. I remember them doing that for the Marvel movies a few years ago. It was great!

I’d even be up for the krayt dragon episode of The Mandalorian (S2E1) on the big screen. It’s very cinematic. The same goes for the last for episodes of The Clone Wars (Siege of Mandalore).

I still want to see the 3-D versions. The trench run and speeder bikes would be awesome!

There’s no part of Star Wars I wouldn’t show up to the theater for, once things get back to normal.

I would LOVE to see the original version of the 1977 film. I have a 1984 release on VHS that is in pretty darn good shape. I recently digitized it*; a little grainy but the sound is good and is very watchable. I was on a quest to find a tape without the “Episode IV” on it but realized that the film was not released on home (or rental) video before 1992 - after they decided that this was the fourth installment of the series. I saw the original 1977 film in theaters well over 100 times as a youngster (my mom said “At least I know where she is…”) and saw it first when it came out in just a couple of sound channels, and then my friend and I were stunned when the 6 track version hit our theater one day. What happened to Aunt Beru’s voice? All of a sudden, her low key dialog was this sing-songy voiceover that we both hated. Certain sound effects - and even some dialogue - was missing (Open the blast doors! Open the blast doors!) and even C3po’s explanation of what Ben had to shut off in order to disable the tractor beam were GONE.

I wish I had kept all of the literature I collected back then - with the suggestions of the sequel’s plot twists etc. Lucas claimed the whole thing was written ahead of time, but I know better. I just wish I had kept my substantiating documentation about this - that no, it was decided later that it would be revealed that Darth Vader was Luke’s father. If you forget all that you know about what happens in the “fifth and sixth” installment with that paternal revelation and the fact that Luke & Leia are not only related, but twins - and watch the first episode, sorry, the FOURTH episode - Star Wars released in 1977 is all inclusive. But knowing the revelations, it gets creepy.

Anyway, I’m glad I found this forum. I have a LOT of information I have carried with myself over the years. To this day, I still know every flipping word in the 1977 film - every shot, every blooper they left in. I was relieved they left those in when they came out with the remastered stuff. I was intrigued by the remastered version at first, but now I sort of resent what was done. The scene with Jabba and Han Solo really pi–ses me off. They recycled dialogue! UGH. I’m glad I have my 1984 copy that clearly also shows that the scene with Greedo & Han Solo - SOLO SHOT FIRST and Greedo didn’t shoot at all…

I know Lucas is strange about having any of the “original releases” available for viewing - it’s my understanding that the Library of Congress doesn’t even have one! I am fortunate to have 3 copies - 2 of them are in pretty good shape. It’s ironic that VHS machines are very expensive now by the way, but a trip to my thrift shop landed me one for $7.

I look forward to participating in these forums. I only wish I had kept all of my Star Wars articles I had saved during that period where Star Wars was my 14 year old life!!

*DIGITIZED: For my own use and preservation. VHS tapes degrade, so do DVDs - DVD Rot. I do not and will not violate laws by selling said digitized copies.

The library of congress does have the original prints submitted for the copyright they digitized. What they don’t have is an archival print. Lucasfilm couldn’t provide one because it doesn’t exist, even Fox never had archival prints made. What they did have was a 3 strip backup of the original camera negative made, which had color layers misaligned they never checked it before putting it into storage. Lucas dug it out in the 1990s and found it was useless.

The only archival quality print Lucasfilm could offer the LOC was the 1997 special edition which they refused.

As insane as it sounds no restored version exists of the original 3 movies at Lucasfilm, and no DCP has been prepared for exhibition. Lucas never spent the money for obvious reasons. He spent money on the 3D conversion and the Reliance 4K scan of the Special Edition, which eventually was released as Special Edition 4.0 in 2020 but not in 3D.

I see you are a avid Star War fan as i am too You are a pretty sharp Lady when it comes to Star Wars episode IV theatre realease actually came out on my birthday which is another reason why I love it so much I too have watch this movie over a hundred times and just watched it again for he May The Fourth Be With You day. I also do NOT LIKE the and saw the changes that you and I saw with the New 6 or 7. 1 Multi sound tracks upgraded dialogues. it p*ssed me off as well. However I do take issue with the Han and Greedo shoot scene in Tattoine Cantina Bar “I believe” that Greedo DID shoot first at Han first reason being is that if you look at Hans head it moved slightly to the left as the Greedo laser hits the wall over Hans head. but that is going to an issue with fans all around the world for a long long long time. I applaud you for still having a VHS copy of episode IV I had bootleg VHS copies of episodes IV but lost them as years went by can’t find them now. I applaud you for having one mine got away from years ago as i grew up.

The big movie theater event won’t be until May 2027, to mark the 50th anniversary of the original film. You’ll have to wait until then, I’m guessing. Probably Episodes IV-VI in 2027, then in 2029 Episodes I-III with possibly FX changes to mark the 30th anniversary.

I’m probably dead wrong here, but I’m just assuming this will be the case.

The AFI Silver here in the DC area will be showing ESB in August. I remember hearing last year about how the ESB screenings here and there were actually still the old 2k dcp, so I suspect this will be the same. Kinda puzzling why they wouldn’t be showing the newer 4k version, but then again LFL/Disney might not want to prepare new dcp’s until it’s time for an actual grand re-release in 3D and Dolby Cinema and Imax.

Of course, AFI Silver could theoretically be showing an actual ‘97 print (the info listed says 1980/1997, so it can’t be any older than that), but I doubt Disney even wants pre-2011 versions out there anymore.

I’m sure Disney will make a huge event of the Star Wars saga in 4K in 2027, I’m mean that is the 50th Anniversary of the first film.

By then this COVID thing should be long gone.

First did you state a 3D version? Holy Mother… That I would just love to see but how will pull that one off but knowing Disney they will find away of course. However being down here in the southeast where nothing really happens like that. As far as the DC theatre I love to see that i theatre one more haven’t seen it in a theatre since when I was in high school. Something like that should be a blast.

Neither did we. What a lightsaber come out of the screen to the audience or a ship look will look like it flying past a patron in the theatre? Ha that would be a blast. don’t you think?
