The glasses they handed out were professional glasses for use within the Post Production Environment and cost about $200 each! The consumer sets were going to be $10-15 each if I remember correctly.
The process is very much hit and miss, with some stuff working better than others - plans in Top Gun looked like toys, but John Travolta singing Grease Lightning and pointing at the camera was very effective. Star Wars didn't look like Amazing 3D!!!, but it did add a depth and a richness to the scenes on the blockade runner.
In terms of costs, I think the guy guestimated about $6mill-ish, but put it in the context of taking part during the Post Production on films.
