Hi,

Does anyone know of a filter or program that can turn a normal 2-D video file into a 3-D one?

You know the type you need to make the red/blue glasses to see.

I was thinking how kewl it would be to have my own 3-D version of the CLASIC Star Wars. We all know that when Lucas puts out his 3-D versions, they will be the re-makes.

The image needs to turn out something like this…

3 points if you can name the movie above!

That is a great idea, I really hope someone will know how to do this!

I'v seen this thing that says it will turn 2-D to 3-D via a converter box, but you need to use their glasses only. I would want glasses that can be made by anyone that wanted to see it.

"Enjoy 3D Digital, Special Effects at Home! After years of research, a group of scientists and engineers have finally achieved what many have considered to be the impossible: Convert a standard 2D video image into a true, holographic-like 3D projection - in real time. What this means is that you can now watch virtually all of your favorite TV shows and sporting events, your entire collection of VHS and DVD movies, your entire library of home videos and play every video game you have ever owned - and do it ALL in Real 3D!"

When did they release Jaws 3D on video? Didn't know about that one. Did they ever do that for Ft13th Part III?

"Jaws 3-D" was never released in 3-D format on video as far as I know. It was converted to 2-D and re-titled "Jaws 3" for home video.

There is a plugin you can get for Adobe After Effects that creates the coloured shadows enabling 3D, but this is used on multi layered compositions, therefore, you would have to mask out each item you want the 3d effect on. Its not just a case of slapping it on top Im afraid. It would be better for you to make something of your own, as taking a film thats 2d and changing it to 3 would take forever.

I went to the demonstration a couple of months ago for the 3D cinema that George Lucas is looking at and saw the various demonstrations.

The glasses they handed out were professional glasses for use within the Post Production Environment and cost about $200 each! The consumer sets were going to be $10-15 each if I remember correctly.

The process is very much hit and miss, with some stuff working better than others - plans in Top Gun looked like toys, but John Travolta singing Grease Lightning and pointing at the camera was very effective. Star Wars didn't look like Amazing 3D!!!, but it did add a depth and a richness to the scenes on the blockade runner.

In terms of costs, I think the guy guestimated about $6mill-ish, but put it in the context of taking part during the Post Production on films.

Japan had a format back in the 80's called VHD. This was the format for which all 3D films saw their home release. Many of the 3D DVDs you see on ebay were probably sourced from VHDs.

Blue/red 3D works because the objects closer to the viewer have a greater blue/red shift then objects farther away. (...or the otherway around...not sure) So to have any effect approximating reality you would have to selectively apply these color shifts to the images. You would need some process which could figure out where images in frame are in relation to the camera, then apply the color shift accordingly. I think the 3d processes used in the past either used two cameras to capture or somehow shifted one color by a special lense.

Manually shifting the blue or red spectrum a 3-7 pixels might work for some of the space sequences where objects fly by camera quickly but overall it won't be 3D-ish.

Yup...

Check it out!

Bit too rich for me. Might try to pick up one of those DVD's instead.

Why watch a 2-D movie in 3-D? I'm not too familiar with the format (I skipped both those 3-D Robert Rodriquez flicks) but a 3-D movie sounds fairly stupid to me. Is Lucas' release of the trilogy in 3-D gonna use new technology or something so that things look actually three dimensional or is this just the usual lame red and blue?

i would imagine they are going to use a technology similar to the Universal Studios/IMAX/Disney 3D format. the red/blue format would bite. plus i heard a rumor that the SW 3D movies will be only released at the imax.
