4 is the standard setting on most M2V encoders, and a decent setting to use. Anyone who thinks that using the standard setting "loses all credibility," well ....

Pick up any PROFESSIONALLY authored DVD and check out the bitrate. You're not going to see "4" as the standard unless the PQ is sub-par.
It also matters what you're watching it on. The bigger it is, the more you're going to notice problems. I deal with videophiles who have 92" projectors. Personally, I have a 51" HDTV. You? Maybe you're still watching it on a regular TV and aren't going to notice the quality difference but I'm sorry, 4 ain't gonna cut it.
