June 1st update:

I have finished the frame isolation and compositing for the first scene. Early in the process I realized the original footage did not match the framing of the movie scene. This resulted in the crewmen and chewie being cropped before appearing in the scene as they both walk into frame.

If I was a lazy guy I would have simply cropped everything to match the video footage…

But, in keeping with the look and framing of the finished film, I matched the framing as best as possible and re-used footage to fill in the spots where the actors walk on and off the screen.

I put together this montage to show you what I mean:

At any rate, I am moving on to colorizing the rest of the footage of the close up with Lando, Chewie, Luke and Leia.

Here is what is done so far:

(Edit): sorry for the video looking so soft… the IMGUR site does indeed compress it down a bit. I can’t even see the light grain I added.

As always, any feedback is welcome.

Very Respectfully,
Erich

I’m amazed how good that compositing looks, especially since its all B/W to begin with.
The colours also look great and natural. I hope to see this scene completed soon hopefully!

Bobson,

Thanks, I appreciate the comment. I initially tried to key out the grey backing using various filters with different tolerances… I could never get a clean separation of the actors from the backdrop.

So I pulled every frame individually into photoshop and erased the background out for each…individual frame…

It really was (as far as I could manage) the only way to get the desired look. Even after all the isolation work was complete, there remain bits and pieces here and there in the footage that still bug me as I watch it play out.

That being said, there has to be a line somewhere between the time / effort I spend with that particular task, and a point of diminishing return. At the end of the day I think it works well enough.

I truly wish I could have chroma-keyed the backdrop out though… It would have saved me hours/days/weeks of work.

erichf69, I feel you on the frame-by-frame photoshop work. That stuff can be so brutal, feels like it’s never going to end. I really dread that stuff, but sometimes that’s the only…😦

If I might offer a slight suggestion on your work… Your colorization is great, but it currently looks just a tiny smidge too much like colorized footage in your mp4 composite there. With the background being a largely gray (with no spots of really saturated color) I recommend you try reducing the saturation a tiny wee bit on the colorized layer. Also, try lowering the brightness just a tad (or increasing contrast a tiny bit?) as the shadowing for the foreground material looks a smidge too bright. Again, just tiny adjustments of those, to get a closer overall feel-match for your final composite.

With the hardest (and very impressive) work behind you, I think toying around with these — testing via small increments — could have you hit an even closer sweet spot in your composite than you have now, accomplished with only minutes of adjustments (instead of hours of work) 😃

LightWave = fun times with gfx for me 😃

Good evening folks,

WXM, thank you for the kind words and recommendations. I am taking a week off from the project so I can get some fresh eyes on it. I will definitely tinker with some of the values you mentioned. That being said I will probably never be 100% satisfied with it (I am somewhat a perfectionist to a fault).

Benduwan, I am always open-minded towards future endeavors. I think after this scene, I will take a look at the rancor material you sent me. I have not decided the way ahead on that one yet.

The kid in me is always looking forward to what’s next, while the old fart in me keeps saying “finish one thing at a time” 😃)

At any rate, I am very excited to have this project to work on. It makes retired life more fun.

Very Respectfully,
Erich

What you are doing is an extremely challenging thing to even attempt (as I surely don’t need to tell you 😃) and you’ve achieved a miracle so far. Hopefully my little, amateur “fresher eyes” suggestions will be a little bit fruitful and not just have you running in circles with settings-toying for an hour or two only to land more or less back where you started.

However, I’ve come up with an even better idea since that post!: Go to Lucasfilm and tell them you need the original camera negative for this shot. When they give it to you, you get it scanned in 8k (be sure to tell them to turn the color on!) and that way you don’t have to worry about the colorizing anymore. On top of the color being good, the grain and resolution should at a better starting point than what you’ve been using. Yay, so simple, eh?! Bet you’re kicking yourself for not thinking of it! 😃 (that idea is j/k of course 😄)

This BW footage is a field where AI could work! We have good quality scenes of the actors with similar lighting, framing and clothing, so an AI could easily match it with the low res BW footage…

4throck,

I would be interested in the process… I am certainly not opposed to the idea. I just don’t know anything about that stuff.

erichf69, you did a great job, congratulations!

Now, as I’m more perfectionist than you, there are some really minimal problems - like reflections on Han’s back - but considered what it looked like before, well… I can live with them! 😄

Keep going!!!

spoRv,

Thank you for the kind comments. I am back at painting frames this week. I will likely update again in about 2-3 weeks. Ever onward!

Has anyone thought of doing a faux workprint cut of TFA using the BD/DVD/3DBD/DMA deleted scenes and select trailer shots?

I love deleted scenes of the OT, its the only thing that got me to buy the Blu-Ray saga edition set (which is now two editions behind, but I don’t want any of that “macklunky”).

Keep up the good work! I would love to see a GOUT style edition with as many deleted scenes re-incorporated as possible.

Has anyone here considered documenting the Sequel Trilogy deleted scenes? 😃

Other than the Episode III clip with Dooku, I’ve never heard of anything showing up. There’s the battle droid line in Trivial Pursuit too.

Hiya,

I’m wondering for this deleted scene of General Crix Madine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeOhP7KYILU&t=40s

from 0:00-0:39. I cant seem to find the source and after some searching on the forums. I’m guessing this is from Rinzler ebook? I was wondering if there’s a better source file for this or any work has been done on this. I would like to use this scene for my own fan edits. thanks!
