Subscription requests and management will be improved in the new software. You'll be able to subscribe to any thread at any time without posting in it, and you'll be able to delete thread subscriptions within your profile.
Actually you can subscribe to threads without a posting now.
<- When you click that in a thread you want to subscribe in you get to a page that gives you that option. Also, if you click the today button in the upper right corner. You can manage your subscriptions there in the left column.
