Sorry for being so quiet on progress as of late. I actually need some help on this one. Shown below is a gif of one of the shots that I’m compositing the lightsaber effects onto.
I’m using a Plugin literally called “saber” and have it to apply to layers masks. The problem I’m having is masking out the areas of the lightsaber blade so it isn’t layered on top of the characters as they’re fighting. Problem is, the Saber plugin when set to layer masks applies to ALL masks that exist on the selected layer. Anyone with After effects experience know how I can achieve the proper blocking out of the blade? Here’s a link to a video covering the plugin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reSXGxkyr0k&t=1937s
Also, if anyone knows of a better method of upscaling, that would be great. This shot in particular is the best i can do with After Effects’ Detail Preserving Upscale.

Hey everybody. Sorry for the radio silence. I’ve been busy lately. Long story short, aside from making fan edits, I also make my own short films, host a podcast and do all sorts of things involved with the industry. Since things are beginning to look up in terms of job opportunities in my profession, I’ve been putting most of my time into getting prepared for the summer. Naturally, working on this project has been booted to the very bottom of my priority list. Not because I don’t enjoy working on it, but simply because I have more important things to worry about. Thankfully, because I don’t wanna leave things unfinished, I’ve put together a schedule during the week to improve progress. Things may be subject to change, but I plan on getting it out within the year. For those who have followed the project, thank you for the patience and stay tuned.

That extended ROTJ duel footage would be so cool if it’s possible to bring close to the quality of the theatrical footage! The duel has always felt very short, although I like the rhythm it’s cut to other action in the end of the movie.
What is your source for it? I found The Evolution of The Lightsaber Duel- documentrary on Vimeo. One of the problems is that the doc footage seems to be interlaced, meaning the footage has horizontal black lines. It doesn’t look interlaced on the drive link you posted though… Maybe there is some kind of AI aided software that can turn interlaced to progressive footage.
Also for the bigger detail n footage, maybe ask bryantmh for help, he did an awesome job on Prequel deleted scene AI upscales:

If you still have problem with masking using the Saber- plugin, try making Adjustment layers and putting the effect on that? I have used the Saber- plugin but only to punch up some shots in the Phantom Menace- lightsaber fight. The problem is that the plugin has no way to make saber’s blade tip pointy. It just looks that the blade has been cut of from the top. Or maybe I just haven’t found all the plugin settings… The better result may be to hand animate the tip glow on sabers and do the most of work with Saber- plugin.
Anyway, very cool project! I would like to have a link to ANH please!

I’m surprised I haven’t found this thread earlier. I can help with the upscaling of the extra Rotj extended duel footage. I’m too inexperienced and unable to clean old footage, but can run topaz though.

Sure! I’ll try uploading a clip to my cloud server and send it when I have the time. I’ve been real busy with work lately as well as focusing on other projects, but I’d like to return to this one and get it finished.
