The film Moonstruck has the important message that love just finds a way no matter the path. It also has in my opinion one of the best Nicholas Cage performances, tied with Spider-Man into The Spiderverse and The Croods.

Star Wars has 3 eras: The eras are 1977-1983(pre Expanded Universe), (1983-2014) expanded universe, or (2014- now) Disney-bought version. Each are valid.

The film Justice League The Snyder Cut is an over-hyped mess. Its main issues are the over-reliance on gore and the overly long run time. In all honesty I do not recommend this as a movie for the more sensitive among us. If you do watch it, there is a epilepsy warning due to bright strobing lights.

I’m not a fan of the recent DC movies. I really only like the first Wonder Woman movie. The rest range from bad to only mildly entertaining. That said, I loved Zack Snyder’s Justice League. I’ve seen it twice now. WB have squandered the potential of the DC source material. I hope they can turn it around.

Last night I saw Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy.

Todd Phillips took a hell of a lot of inspiration from that movie when he made Joker, and I think the reason this masterpiece was a commercial failure was because it was way ahead of its time.

As people were talking about Zack Snyder’s Justice League, I’ll put in a brief review. I thought it was great. Slow and indulgent, sure, but it’s also really atmospheric, the characterisation is miles ahead of the original film (low bar, I know) and it has some genuinely powerful and emotionally compelling moments. Most of all, I could tell it had passion put into it, unlike the very uninspired Justice League of 2017. While Joss Whedon’s version was a ‘corporate product’ film, clearly designed to appeal to as many people as possible, ZSJL has bold creative decisions and everything about it screams ‘fully realised artistic vision’ to me, even if it IS still a blockbuster film.

The actual last movie I saw was Close Encounters, which I was rewatching. Still a masterpiece. The way it handles the mystery of the aliens is nothing short of enchanting, although it’s increasingly clear to me that Roy Neary is a very irresponsible parent.

The film Godzilla vs King Kong 2021 is a visually stunning cinematic event that teaches the story that we can be friends no matter where we come from.

I watched the Extended version of Fellowship of the Ring. I was surprised how for the most part it holds up all these years later. Ian McKellen is great as Gandalf. Other than the dated cg, it is an excellent film.

Once Upon a Time in America (1984), directed by Sergio Leone.

An OK movie, however I found Ennio Morricone’s overtly sentimental score at odds with with a story that centers around Prohibition era hoodlums.

The last movie I watched was Jumper (2008). I mostly watched it because I wanted to see some movies with Hayden Christensen and it’s one of his better known ones. I actually liked it a lot better than I thought I would and I was surprised to see Samuel L. Jackson in it too.

Into the Spider-Verse. I really enjoyed this even if the animation style was kind of jarring in places.
Very comic book like. I liked that aspect but it takes getting used to.

The film Mitchels vs Machines tells the important message that all families are crazy, and that is ok!

I just had the chance to finally watch THX 1138. It’s such an intriguing and mysterious film with a very relevant commentary on multiple things. The music and sound design were particularly very hauntingly beautiful and a big part of the experience. I really liked it a lot. I definitely wish we had got more of these types of experimental films from George. I feel a second viewing and multiple more are definitely in order.

The film Much Ado About Nothing the 1993 version is a great adaptation. I highly recommend it.

I remember watching glimpses of that movie when I was a kid, and for whatever reason Robert Sean Leonard is what I remember the most about it. Over the years I’ve read that Keanu Reeves is the weakest link in terms of acting.

The last movie I watched was Jumper (2008). I mostly watched it because I wanted to see some movies with Hayden Christensen and it’s one of his better known ones. I actually liked it a lot better than I thought I would and I was surprised to see Samuel L. Jackson in it too.

During this last year in quarantine, I decided to watch all of Hayden’s movies. Very interesting journey seeing his rapid rise and just as a rapid fall from prominence. Jumper is definitely one of the better ones. A little longer than it needed to be, but nothing a motivated fan editor couldn’t fix. I often wonder if he and Samuel L Jackson got along, if they reminisced about their time together on Star Wars.

I’ll also say my other other take away from Haydenfest, as I called it, is that our boy is on the rise again! It’s a little funny (naked brag alert), but when I finished his films I said he was on the rise and predicted he would be working on bigger projects soon and then within a week, it was announced he would be on Kenobi.

If anyone is interested in seeing more Hayden, I definitely recommend his 3 most recent. Little Italy is a soft little rom-com directed by Don Petrie, who directed Mystic Pizza in the 80s. This movie may be set in the same universe and while it’s definitely not as known or beloved as it’s 80s forbearer, I think in many ways it’s the superior film.

First Kill is billed as a thriller starring him and Bruce Willis and well, I’ll be honest that’s some dishonest marketing, Bruce Willis is barely in the film. HOWEVER, it’s one of my favorite Hayden flicks, gripping as hell, sneaks up on you. Hayden’s true co-star, I forget his name, but it’s the guy who played Renly Baratheon on Game of Thrones. He’s excellent in this, well worth checking out.

The Last Man is his most recent film, I’ll be honest, it’s real slow and real weird but features great performances from Hayden and co-star Harvey Keital (random, but related: it’s Harvey Keita’s birthday today!) and if you’re looking for something with a nice dark slow burn, it’s a great watch

All that talk about Hayden, I forgot to mention the actual last movie I saw! I watched Maze Runner: The Death Cure the other day. A friend and I had decided on a whim to watch the three Maze Runner movies, knowing nothing about that going in, and I have to say I was shocked at how good they were. When I think of post Harry Potter/post Hunger Games YA adaptations I tend to assume they’re cash ins by movie studios who know they can scrimp on budget and quality since they have a built on audience from the books. But I was really pleasantly surprised by Maze Runners! The design on the maze monsters and the pseudo zombies were both cool as hell and a lot scarier than I thought they’d be willing to go in YA. Main character was a bit of a drip, got that boring protagonist syndrome, but everybody else was interesting. When Giancarlo Esposito is in your movie or show, you know you’re having a good time. Was also very excited as an Alita Battle Angel fan to see Rosa Salazar show up in the series.

Actually I think the runtime for Jumper is just fine.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

No words can do it justice! What an amazing film with strong ecological and nature themes. I can already tell I’m going to absolutely love Hayao Miyazaki’s films.

Next Up: My Neighbour Toroto

I recommend Princess Mononoke. If you are up for watching Ghibli films. Its not really a kids film though. And it isn’t lighthearted like Totoro, or Nausicaa, castle in the sky or Kiki’s delivery service. It is adult and quite violent. Though it isn’t as dark as say Grave of the Fireflies.

Princess Mononoke looks so good. The trailer reminds me of my story I’m writing! So I definitely think I want to give it a watch. I was thinking about buying it and Howl’s Moving Castle next pay day actually. The others you mention also looked good too.

All Studio Ghibli films refresh my appreciation of nature in some sense. A lot of those have characters with strong connections to nature and have subtle ecological themes. It’s great.

The film Spirit: Stallion of the Simiraon is a heart wrenching story that tells of abuse, love, forgiveness and freedom. It also lightly touches upon the destruction that the industrial boom of the 1780s-1890s caused.
