Help: Looking for... Mouse Hunt HDTV Rips

Earlier this year, the film Mouse Hunt received a Blu-ray release. I was pretty hyped, seeing how it was one of my favorite childhood movies. To my disappointment however, the film had a dark blue tint put over the entire movie. It was much darker than before and it doesn’t fit the tone of the light hearted comedy. I would like to acquire an HDTV or a VHS version seeing how it has more accurate color timing. Any help would be appreciated.

I don’t know if Id call it a dark blue tint over the entire movie. Certain scenes are a lot bluer that in other releases but other scenes, well lit ones, are very warm with well saturated skin tones. Its a much more selective dynamic grade than simply blanketing the whole thing in one color (FOTR style).

You can see that there is a lot of blue in these scenes but only when appropriate, other scenes are perfectly neutral or warmer. This matches up with my recollection of the film in cinemas. Dark and moody.

Remember that home media transfers from this era are taken from low contrast interpositives rather than release prints. What you see here is not exactly a representative of the theatrical grade.

Is there a 35mm print of the film with true color timing?

It’s highly likely this is the most faithful to the original prints considering this is clearly a much more recent remaster and the look is consistent with the director’s other movies like The Ring

I just watched it and it looked fantatsic, not blue at all. A little black crush in a few scenes but otherwise very nice. Fantastically well shot film.

I have a 10-year-old HDTV-broadcast from Swiss TV, but it looks similar to the Blu-ray as well - which I also think could be very close to the theatrical look.

I never saw the film in theaters so I never got to see what the theatrical color timing was. I had assumed that it had been similar to the DVD and VHS version as that was the version I watched the most.

This was very obviously shot to have that grim French look going on somewhat, like a lighter hearted City of Lost Children. I did see it in the theater way back when and recall it having a dark warm look. My memory of it is not as vivid as say, The Lost World though.

I’m not sure what your TV’s settings are but it shouldn’t look blue at all.
