Geeks also like new toys. I had a lot of fun playing around with my Power Mac last night. There was some frustration, but overall it was a good experience. The Mail setup wizard was annoying because there was no way to bypass it and create accounts directly that I could see. It insisted on checking my login info during setup and was having problems connecting to my POP server (worked fine in Entourage), so it just sat there churning away for several minutes. Canceling the wizard closed Mail completely. Kind of dumb. Installing Tiger couldn't have been easier though.

And finally, OS X is pretty. I have a strong attraction to good aesthetics. Superficial, but it adds to the experience.

Nothing superficial about it at all. Pretty packages and looks make you want to work/play with something. Be it a car or a computer or a woman or one of any number of other things.

I never use Mail or Safari. If I'm checking POP mail on a Mac, I stick with Entourage. Yes, it's Microschlock, but it's always worked very reliably. One of the better Windows software packages. Of course, at work I'm only running Panther, so maybe the Tiger upgrades to Mail and Safari are better. But I won't know just yet, and I doubt I'll be giving up my beloved Firefox anytime soon. Don't want to upgrade to Tiger just yet as it would require the new versions of Adobe software which I cannot yet afford. Maybe sometime down the line a bit. Or, if I buy a whole other Mac and run Tiger on that one while still running Panther on my PBook so I have the backup.

Good reasons. Well thought out. Not just someone who made the jump simply to make the jump. Kinda the same thing with me when I switched. I was going to go into video editing back when I was in grad school. I researched it and found out Macs were best. This was 1999. So I got my PowerBook. Granted the PC I owned before that was Win98, I didn't dislike it. In fact, when I actually went ahead and sold my old NEC, I nearly cried. I loved that machine. It was a great little Winbox. But it was aging and needed to be replaced. I still use Windows now. My work PC has XP on it and I like how it works. But I've just become so ingrained in the Mac culture that a Mac is all I own at home. May change. Who knows? Especially if work were to buy me a computer for home (not friggin' likely, though). One can never say for sure what will happen from one given day to the next.
