I’ve had a few questions over the years and with having watched the last two movies multiple times those questions only seem to be increasing so I figured I’d see what others could fill in for me.

The Prequel is essentially the Emperor or Palpatine gaining control of the Republic and turning it into the Empire. My question is aside from things like dictatorships are bad and things of that nature. What is so evil about the empire? In ANH Han, Luke, and seemingly most citizens in the galaxy are living every day, happy lives. What makes the Empire so evil? We see the Emperor dealing in the dark side, we know he’s a dark sith lord, but it seems all but the smallest fraction of people in the world’s lives are virtually unchanged from the prequels to the OT. There doesn’t seem to be any talk of economic crash, or repression, or anything of the sort.

I always believed the Sith to just be the dark side of the Force. The anti Jedi if you will. You see with the Jedi in the prequels there are countless Jedi, an entire council of masters, apprentices, and possibly those in between? I guess thats a side question. Is everyone that is a Jedi either a master or an apprentice? Do you graduate from apprenticeship and instantly become a master? The other question is why do we never see any more than a Sith master and his apprentice? Are there really only one, two , maybe three people practicing the ways of the Sith at one time? Where are the rest of the Sith at?

The Empire is evil because it destroys peaceful planets. Aside from that, and the whole dictatorship angle, there’s a sizeable school of thought on The Empire Did Nothing Wrong, which is of course absurd but does make some fair points about galactic stability and making the space trains run on time.

The prequels establish that there are only ever two Sith in existence at any time, at least according to the Sith Rule of Two, a master and an apprentice. This doesn’t mean there aren’t other dark Force wielders out there or even other would-be Sith, but there are only two official Sith in recent galactic history at any one time. Of course, this is an invention of the prequels, and the Original Trilogy was quite vague on the nature of the Sith apart from calling Vader one of their order. Presumably there could be unlimited numbers of Sith.

According to the prequels, the Jedi have a three-tiered system of Padawan(Apprentice), Knight, and Master. A Jedi Knight takes on a Padawan to train as a Jedi Knight. When the Padawan reaches knighthood, my understanding is that their teacher can become an official Jedi Master. This system was not apparent during the Original Trilogy, however, and the working canon by Lucas was that a student or apprentice could become a Jedi Knight if they wished to use a lightsaber and be a warrior monk like Obi-wan, or they could devote themselves to teaching and peace and become a Jedi Master like Yoda. It was not a linear succession, and btw it’s my favored explanation of the Jedi.

I kind of see it like monarchy. There’s legally only ever one King or Queen, but obviously history does not play out that cleanly. Civil wars have often been fought over whose is the true royal lineage.

It’s the same with the Sith. There’s supposed to be only ever two at once, in a continuous lineage. But there can be multiple claimants saying they’re the two true Sith and the other guys are pretenders. This happens in the Clone Wars cartoon, with Maul & Savage and Palpatine & Dooku. Palpatine claims that Dooku is the apprentice, while Maul claims that he is still the apprentice and that Savage will become the Sith Apprentice when he kills Palpatine and becomes the Sith Master.
