On George’s 77th birthday I thought it was appropriate to create a thread dedicated to him, his work, his career outside of film, and beyond. Without George we wouldn’t have Star Wars or many of the films we have today, a foundation dedicated to education and preserving films such as Jabberwocky, Citizen Kane, and The Juniper Tree, an art museum opening in Los Angeles, and so much more. George’s contributions and life story go far beyond a galaxy, far, far away…

Let’s discuss what he’s meant to us.

He created two of my favorite movies of all time Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I’ve always admired his imagination, his sense of visual composition and his incredible talent for editing.

His knowledge of how sound and the motion picture score is at least half the experience.

He got me interested in fantasy, science fiction and movies and how they are made in general. And in mythology.

Despite what i think of what he did with the second half of his career he will always be my favorite director, my generations Walt Disney/Thomas Edison. He’s influenced generations of filmmakers and visualists/artists and writers. Which i doubt was ever his intention when he made a fantasy film for 10 year olds that was supposed to be a Saturday morning serial, throwaway entertainment like those old republic serials.

Seriously he was the king of escapist cinema and i’m grateful for the childhood i had which would have been very bleak without his movies.

George is a fantastic ideas man and generally seems like a really nice guy. I always wanted him to branch out into standalone projects like THX and American Graffiti once again after selling Star Wars, but alas. I still live in hope that he’ll direct a Mandalorian episode one of these days or something. But if he’s really done with directing for good, despite the quarrels I and many others have with his behaviour over the OOT, I don’t think he’d be leaving behind a bad legacy - not bad at all.

George did what he wanted with Star Wars and brought inspiration and hope to generations.
