I feel like what has happened with the NuEU is analogous to the Special Editions replacing the Original films. Sure, the new versions of the films may play nicer with the prequels occasionally, but it feels like replacing a part of history.

Gone are the multitude of perspectives on the nature of the Clone Wars and the Old Republic, the nature of the Jedi of old, the nature of the Force and the surreal explorations of long-lost technology. In its place is an anodyne catholic dogma written by writers often too shackled to the multitudinous rules of the established canon to really imagine or create. There are still good stories in the NuEU such as Leia: Princess of Alderaan, but I fear more stories like Queen’s Shadow or Queen’s Peril, meandering travelogues constrained to the point of irrelevance. Perhaps the High Republic Era will bear fruit, but even so the Wild West of Star Wars is gone.
