Toy Story 2020 Theatrical "$5 Fan Favorites" Re-Release Recreation (a Work In Progress)

Last year on November 5th, 2020, Movie theaters were shipped out a “$5 Fan Favorites” release print of the 1995 CGI Animated flick, “Toy Story”. This was following previously released films “Monsters, Inc.” and “Coco”. Since then, I’ve been wanting to recreate that exact print that was presented in theaters. Now, i’m finally gonna do that project.

Sources I need to find and use include:

  • Toy Story Blu-ray (for the feature that plays, runs in 24 fps)
  • Toy Story 4K Blu-ray (for the Dolby Atmos track)
  • The War With Grandpa Theatrical Preview (Preview #1)
  • Peter Rabbit 2 The Runaway Theatrical Preview 2 (Preview #2)
  • Rumble Theatrical Teaser (Preview #3)
  • Raya and the Last Dragon Theatrical Teaser (Preview #4)
  • Regal Promos Regal Pepsi and Regal Unlimited “Dr. X-Plor” (BOTH DON’T HAVE HD RIPS)

If anyone has HD footage of the Regal Pepsi ad and the "Dr. X-Plor advent, please send it to me via private topic. This recreation will hopefully be done by the one year anniversary of the Thursday Night Preview print (November 5th, 2021) , if not earlier. Reply below if you have any questions, thoughts, footage of the Regal promos, or anything else!

hmm. The print is going to be a 60fps version of the 2010 Blu-ray, plus a Dolby ATMOS track, so try and buy the 4K blu-ray print (as it includes both standard and 4K Discs) so i can use that as a source! (however, I do want the DVD rip just for my movie collection though.)

Has anyone seen any Family films at Regal yet? (Raya, Croods 2, Tom & Jerry, or older re-released film) I’m wondering because we need at least some footage for the Dr. X-Plor Regal Unlimited Promo and the Regal Pepsi promo that appears before the Toy Story print. This is needed so I can use the footage to track down High Quality Videos for the advertisements.

to describe the promos, Regal Pepsi has slow motion shots of the Pepsi drink being poured into a Pepsi cup on a blue background, while the Dr X-Plor variant of the Regal Unlimited promo has Dr X-plor basically explain stuff about the Unlimited service, while also stating that he “enjoys animated musicals.” If anyone sees these two promos, please record them for me to use. Maybe start recording it during a preview, so you don’t cut off the first 3 seconds.

Why 60fps?

Because that was how the film was presented in. However, i’m unsure if it was 48 fps or 60 fps though.

What’s your source? I fairly certain that Toy Story has never been shown in theaters in any other frame rate other than 24.

well, the source i need is Toy Story on Blu-Ray, specifically both the 4K Disc for dolby atmos track and Regular Disc for video quality. I have the 4K set from 2019 in my library, but I don’t a clear ISO RIP of it yet.

To the best of my knowledge, Toy Story has never been presented in 60 fps - only 24. The DVDs and Blu-rays are all at that same frame rate, so an ISO rip of whatever you plan to use for this project would be 24 (or technically 23.976) frames per second.

well, i’ll see what i’ll do. maybe it was only the trailers that were 60 fps? can’t seem to remember.

yes because every time i go to a theater it shows the movie in 60fps.

Is that so? Then the only movie you’ve been to recently was Gemini Man in 3D.

I think LHUX was trying to be sarcastic. It’s really tough to tell the intended tone of plain text.

On this website, you can watch the video frame by frame and see for yourself that Toy Story has never shown in 30 fps, let alone 60, not even on other recent showings.

I see then. I officially declare that the ENTIRE RE-CREATED SHOWING will be officially presented in the original 24 fps format!

Now, we move on to Part 2 of the project: Finding Resources.

In Part 1, we needed to figure out what frame rate Toy Story would be presented in, either in 24 fps, 30 fps, 48 fps, or 60 fps. You guys all chose 24 fps.

Now, in Part 2, we now need our listed sources. Again, here is what we need for sources to complete this project, including my descriptions on how it’s needed, IN ORDER of appearance:

  • The War with Grandpa Trailer (with MPAA Rated PG card, this is the first trailer that popped up in the trailer reel, unsurprisingly.)
  • Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway Theatrical Trailer #2 (with Appropriate Audiences or MPAA Rated PG card, this is also unsurprising that this trailer popped up in the trailer reel.)
  • Rumble Teaser (With Appropriate Audiences notice, this is the 3rd trailer in the trailer reel, and i didn’t expect it to come here.)
  • Raya and the Last Dragon Teaser (With Appropriate Audiences notice, the final trailer in the trailer reel, as a marketing decision for Disney to promote Raya before it’s original March 12th release.)
  • Regal Cinemas: Pepsi Promotional Advertisement (Promotion for Regal now having Pepsi products)
  • Regal Unlimited: Dr X-Plor Promotional Advertisement (Promotion for new Unlimited service, this being the Dr. X-Plor variant.)
  • Toy Story (Video: 2010 Blu-Ray, shown in 24 frames per second. Audio: 2019 4K Blu-Ray, Heard in Dolby Atmos audio.)

I already have most of the trailers all batched up in the trailer reel, coming from multiple YouTube channels. IGN for Grandpa, Sony Pictures for Runaway, MovieBill for Rumble, and Disney for Raya.
All that I need now, are ISO transfers of the Toy Story Blu-Rays. Video from the 2010 Blu-Ray, Audio from the 2019 4K Blu-Ray. Both Blu-Rays should be easy to buy, since the 2010 Blu-Ray is currently bundled within the 4K Blu-Ray set. The only two sources that i still need to find are the Regal Pepsi promo and the Regal Unlimited promo. If anyone of you have recorded footage of the two together or have HD videos of the promos, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. The screening needs some time to build itself together…

Here are some more footage of another version of the release, this one being a CANTON print. This one has previews for Croods 2, Rumble, Peter Rabbit 2, and Raya. Notice how on the video that’s linked to the closing (top link), the WDP logo has quite an interesting SFX track, probably because of Dolby Atmos remixing.

I think saying “print” is wrong in this day and age. I mean, unless you have evidence otherwise, any modern showing of Toy Story or any other film is highly likely a DCP (Digital Cinema Package). And another thing, you say print in a way that implies that every theater chain gets its own unique version. And lastly, please update the first post to remove the mention of 60 fps.

Well in a way, each theater chain gets a different version of the same movie, but the only thing that changes really is with different bumpers and previews. and, 60 fps thingy in the post was edited.

It’s not the film distributors who add those. The theaters just get send the film (either print or DCP) and the theaters themselves slice in previews, bumpers, or whatever else.
