Hi. I’m new to this forum, so let me introduce myself. I am a sixteen-year-old kid with a high interest in the film industry and its history, the technology that powers the filmgoing experience, and the preservation of fading works. I’ve been lurking this forum for some while now, because I was interested in how fans are endlessly restoring the ORIGINAL theatrical versions of the Star Wars OT, which has been over the years, insecurely modified to a film more incomplete than it originally was.

On the subject of film preservation, I became aware that an earlier mix of the THX trailer “Cimarron” existed, and it’s not just different in panning and levels, but it has a completely different soundtrack! If you are not familiar with “Cimarron”, it was produced at ILM and released in 1988 with the premiere of the almost-forgotten Lucas/Howard film “Willow.” When I found a crappy in-theater live recording of the trailer, I’ve realized that the fate of that mix is in the hands of whoever owns the closest-to-the-original materials and myself, as THX, Ltd. today consists of very different people who are not aware that an early mix of “Cimarron” exists.

Below is the latest version (v1.1) of the restoration project on YouTube:

As you can hear, I’ve gotten one step closer to the original since I’ve started this project in August. If you have any contributions to the project, please let me know.

Hi!

Thank you so much! I was seeking for that version for years.
I saw it at the Max Linder Panorama (Paris , France) years ago in 70mm several times. Was magnificent, and I love this version which is way more psychedelic thant the symphonic version (which is already beautiful, with the James Horner music).

This version was only available in 70mm, as the 35mm version only featured the symphonic version.

It is a shame that THx did not include the 70 mm version on the previous THx demo dvds.

And the only place in which it can be found is… yours!

I managed to make a 5.1 mix, from my memories and enhance the ending and, edit with the beginning of the 35mm version (before the vortex, orchestra tunning) which was identical. Then I used the Cinemascope image (blown up in HD 720p), in sync.

here it is:

Yep that’s the one that played at the Empire Leicester Square before the start of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 70mm Dolby Stereo SR SS. It was also featured on the last STAR TREK marathon day Sunday October 8th 1989, with the newest at the time, STAR TREK V: The Final Frontier which played in THX exclusive at the Empire for one day as it was moved to Plaza.

The slam of that trailer hits your in the chest then mellows down a little as it spins twits around then goes into deep rumble for a few seconds as the THX logo moves off-screen.

It was also featured on the start of STAR TREK VI: The Undiscovered County, Friday 14th February 1992, in 70mm Dolby Stereo SR SS.

Only the originals from the 70mm six-track Dolby stereo Dolby format 42 will sound better on DVD/Bluray.

Sorry, it was in DTS.

I was glad to finally hear this version, because it's the exact version that was spoofed in the Tiny Toons movie 20 years ago. "The audience is now deaf."

A word of advice. Completely pointless necrobumps usually aren’t appreciated by anyone. At all.

Nobody sang The Bunny Song in years…
