For me keep the aspect ratio, and just trim down the epilogue and remove mentions of Bruce’s dreams.

Ah, finally a fellow 4:3 defender! These changes would definitely be my top priorities and for a conservative fanedit (that would please even hardcore fans) those would probably suffice.

Throw me into this camp, too. In most cases I’d prefer my bars on the top, but it worked for JL and BVS. It feels as though the films were meant to be shown that way, and the picture looks more exciting and fixes Snyders problem of shooting so close in many cases. I thought the JL we got in full-screen looked awful, and the aspect ratio was part of the visual improvement

You’ve hit the nail on the head, I completely agree.

That said, I’m not a fan of movies that are constantly “in your face” in general. Close-ups should be chosen very carefully and only with a proper motivation behind them, imo. Give me wide shots any day 😉

Two other things I’d like to change

-Do we even need Arthur meeting Bruce and turning him down? You could just follow him around on his own for a bit, rescuing fishermen and drinking, and then link up Steppenwolf’s attack on Atlantis straight after, similar to how it’s stitched together in the Whedon cut, and then have Arthur follow their trail to Gotham and he meets up with the League that way.

-Don’t have Clark battle the League. I don’t particularly care for that action beat, once he spots his memorial and stares back at the League, just have Lois already there and cut to Lois and Clark touching down on the farm.

I had also thought about splitting the film into two parts. Part one being around 2 hours and 12 minutes with the ending be the rescue mission and realizing they can bring back Superman and part two is everything else.

Yeah I can see the Supes fights the League scene being cut.

Yeah it’s so obvious now knowing that they cropped in on the image for that film.

I’d definitely keep the Superman vs the League fight. It doesn’t matter for the story, but it’s one of the biggest draws for superhero team-ups: seeing “who-would-beat-who” and “how do these two things interact” sort of playground-discussion comic book fan stuff. Flash realizing Superman can see and keep up with him was easily the most fun part of the theatrical cut and is still one of the best moments in the Snyder cut.

If there’s anything to bring over from the theatrical version, the one thing I think absolutely should be brought over is Whedon’s version of the scene where Flash gives Wonder Woman her sword in the tunnel fight. In the theatrical cut, there is a parademon right behind Diana as she’s falling, about to catch her, and because Flash taps her sword into her hand she is then able to quickly spin around in mid-air and slice the demon. It’s a fun and exciting bit of action showing the team work together. In Snyder’s version, however, the parademon is inexplicably missing from that shot, so Flash’s sword-tap accomplishes nothing (if Diana didn’t catch the sword, she’d just pick it up of the ground when she landed) except for knocking the wind out of himself when he reaches the bottom.

The only problem here is that the theatrical is 16:9 while Snyder’s is 4:3, but my ideal version of this movie would be edited to be 16:9 anyway.

I felt the music that plays in the theatrical when The Flash realizes Superman can see him out of the corner of his eye was better. It was weirdly silent in the Snyder Cut and kinda sucked the comedy out of the little bit (it should be funny, Flash makes a funny face realizing).
Maybe I’m just used to the music cue selling the little sequence in the theatrical, and it’s not actually that good from an unbiased perspective, but I dunno. I definitely prefer it over the almost no music version that plays in the Snyder Cut.

I absolutely agree, and my friends and I expressed that same sentiment out loud while watching it for the first time. Incorporating that music or a similar cue for comedic effect while having it flow well with the rest of the scene (Zack’s is longer than Whedon’s) could be difficult, but I think worth trying. Maybe even just a single dramatic deep note, the one from the moment Superman sees Flash, would work tossed into the existing Snyder score.

Also, if anyone is good enough with audio to reduce the [ancient lamentations] that are over-used and horribly out of place in Diana’s fight scenes, any amount would be an improvement. If the terrorist battle is cut, maybe part of the Wonder Woman theme from that scene could be reincorporated elsewhere. Of course, this all comes down to how well the audio tracks are divided up in the eventual home release of this thing.

I dunno I personally love that chant.

It’s not a dealbreaker, I just think the Wonder Woman theme is better suited to the fights, and as the movie goes on it uses the WW theme less and the chanting more, which I didn’t care for.

16:9, 3 hours max, and find some damn way to make Darkseid not such a doofus for just forgetting where the Anti-Life Equation was. I don’t think any Whedon material is necessary, but the Bruce a Diana stuff was fine if need be.

Really the only thing I would think to add-in from the Joss cut is the conversation with Flash and Batman before the first fight with Steppenwulf

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

This might sound crazy, but with how many animated Justice League movies there are, I wonder if it would be possible to cut together an animated conclusion to the Apokolips story…

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

I don’t watch the animation, but you could do a silent black and white film with subtitles. That would be pretty cool

I’m planning on making my own edits for all four of the DCEU films, the ones I’m most interested in being BVS and ZSJL. For ZSJL specifically, I’d keep the 4:3, but cut out stuff that doesn’t need to be there, and have the whole thing be around 3 hours long.
One of my main inspirations for this edit would be this article-

Keeping the aspect ratio intact and 3 hours runtime sounds all good to me! I also agree with basically everything written in the article. There is a good movie hidden under heaps of excess and I think you’re on the right track to unearth it. Good luck with the edit!

Does anyone have a guide on how I could crop this to 1.85:1? (Would fill more space than 16:9). I haven’t sourced a copy yet, but I may have to wait the blu ray release and rip a copy. I could go through the cropped movie and make note of all the scenes which which need re-adjusting. The whole movie seems like a long chore to do such a thing.
I’m a newbie to video editing, so this would be a slog.

Tho while I’m not a fan with cropping the film, if you had too I’d suggest instead cropping it to the IMAX 1.43. I saw the BVS IMAX scenes in that aspect ratio and it’s simply gorgeous. I think an overlay for it should be available in the link I sent to the curious and if not I can happily share mine.

Just a cheeky suggestion, chuck in Ezra Miller’s cameo in CW’s the Flash 😉

Note that for most people’s tv’s, a 1.85 would not “fill more space” than 16:9 (which is 1.78). A 1.78 crop would perfectly fit a standard widescreen tv with no black bars at the top or bottom. A 1.85 would have slight cropping at the top and bottom of a standard 16:9 widescreen tv. The three main formatting options for a ZSJL edit would be to keep it as-is in IMAX format (1.33), crop to 2.39 to match Batman v Superman, or crop to 1.78 to fit a standard widescreen tv. I personally would opt for the 1.78 because this leaves as much of the original picture intact as possible on a standard tv, while not having black bars on the top or sides. It would also not be jarringly different from BVS should someone wish to watch BVS and ZSJL back to back.
