@Testingoutthetest I am not opposed to that idea and it sounds very interesting to help “prolong” the reveal of Palpatine. Seeing a mock up of it would be nice to see. I can only think it may “seem” strange where we havn’t seen him speak a different language in the saga and he would need to at some point explicitly bring out he is speaking the “Sith” language for the sake of the audience to somewhat “explain” why he is speaking something other than basic which we haven’t heard him do.

So again, not against the idea, would need to see it played out and would need to basically be using his voice but messing around with the words/parts of words/etc so it is clearly him and not some voice over trying to sound like him.

I kinda doubt Ian McDiarmid has ever recorded anything like that. The best you could hope for is a foreign dub for a language that not many people know.

To me it sounds like an idea that would work better in written form. Otherwise, the viewer wouldn’t be told what language they are listening to (Sith).

EDIT: One idea I just had that is very similar to your idea is how the novel constantly refers to how mechanized his voice is. Perhaps we could apply a filter to his voice to make it sound more robotic? This would disguise it as well.

I’ll have a look at Sith eyes for the hiss at the weekend. I kind of hate the hiss because again it’s like, “look how comically evil the dark side you’re supposedly tempted by is!”, but you can’t really fix that, so I suppose leaning into it is the best option. I’ll probably do them for the whole sequence anyway since I want that available for my own edit (Maul and Sidious have them all the time + rule of cool).

I understand sade1212 your view on it and don’t disagree with that view on it.

I would be curious as I mentioned how it would “look” as the audience in the movie, or specifically, if the idea of something “sticks out too much” which is a very subjective thing and am not saying it will be or won’t be. Just gotta try it to find out since things that sound good don’t work out or things that doesn’t seem like it would work actually does!

So with the eyes (hehe), I’d like to visually see the “Rey sith eyes” only in key moments first. Such as, the vision she has of herself as the “Sith Empress” and only “hissing Rey clone moment.” That way it’s a good “first step” how it would look to the audience.

One of my reasons too of not seeing the sith eyes during the whole time with “Rey Clone” is it kinda eases Rey and the Audience into that scene a little bit. She is confused and fightened, yes, but not freaking out yet actually seeing her “somewhat physically” but not exactly as she envisioned … yet.

Yeah so maybe the first flash of Rey on the throne she could have normal eyes, but then replace her milky eyes in the second flash with Sith eyes. That would ease into it as well.

Wait … it’s been too long since I’ve seen it, she has milky eyes in the vision? LOL. What the heck? That is lame. Milky white eyes doesn’t even begin to associate with Sith.

I think JJ forgot what he did with Palps (being some decaying clone/thingy) and what Sith eyes are. If he took a moment and rent the previous star wars movies … 😛

Yup we used a documentary shot of Rey on the throne where she obviously has normal eyes. The one that actually appears in the original movie has her eyes being milky. We have both in the edit.

I was under the impression that the reason Palpatine wanted to possess Rey is because she wouldn’t decay like his clones. So replacing that with Sith eyes would definitely help.

Oh dear. What in the world was JJ thinking? …

So yeah, Sith eyes replacing … milky eyes … is a MUCH better choice.

I wouldn’t mind having both shots in the vision be Sithy. But I know we wanted to be more subtle with its usage.

It could certainly work out that way, i’d like to se both. One with both eyes and the other with just the last “empress shot” in her earlier vision. I may lean just the 1 shot in the beginning so it’s more of a “build” up or it hits more to the audience at that moment. I could be wrong though, it may look great with both!

But dear lord … I forgot about the Milk Eye Rey … ugh. Lol. It’s so much clearer using Sith eyes since it actually connects to the past previous trilogies. Lol.

I like the idea of having the Sith eyes toggleable. So normal eyes in one shot on the throne, and Sith eyes replacing the milky eyes in the following shot.

Later with the clone, normal while speaking, Sithy while hissing.

It reminds me of ROTS where Anakin’s eyes are Sithy while he’s really deep into the dark side, but otherwise appear normally. Only Palpatine and Maul had Sith eyes that were permanent.

Agreed with that assessment and that’s what I am thinking would probably work out the best in terms of the Saga in general, but also seem more … Natural? to the audience that way.

I wonder how hard it would be to “paint” the yellow eyes in the milky eye shots? It’s not like doing a color change to the eyes but really a full on replacement. Maybe using Fakeapp to “put her eyes back in” and then color them?

(I say this like I know what I am saying, which I don’t. Lol)

It would definitely be a 2 step process. At least that’s how I would do it… First putting normal eyes over the milky ones, and then taking that clip to put red/orange over it.

Luckily it’s such a brief shot that it shouldn’t be too big of a task I’d imagine.

I wanted to try extending the Rey/Finn moment, to give us more time to play with. By doing so, I thought we could also highlight even more how far away from her friends Rey is getting right now.

V2: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WyXHZZhkVrbW1iEaZi9tS9lGe1nPnLuw/view?usp=sharing

I really like what you did with the whispers in V2, I think it would work if they’re the same whispers she hears when she picks up the dagger on Kylo’s ship, so it would be more like she’s thinking about it, like they’re stuck in her head. It makes sense since she would’ve been talking to Finn about the vision she just had there. It also makes more sense to switch the scenes around because in this version Rey would’ve had to tell them to head to the Endor system so it makes more sense to open with this conversation.

The only nitpick i’d have is we stay on that shot if Rey for a bit too long, maybe Finn’s line could start at the tail end of the Falcon shot, and the whispers could be trimmed down a bit, here’s a quick mockup of how that could look like:

https://vimeo.com/532427690

Also with this new sequence there would need to be a “jumping out of lightspeed” sound effect when they reach Endor, which shouldn’t be too hard to add since the camera already holds for a bit before the Falcon appears.

I’m liking this. If the sound is cleaned up a bit, it does connect the dots on them going to Endor, since Rey told him/them about it and she is focused on the “sith whispers/voices” in her head now. Is it Vimeo or something that is causing the sound to feel distorted regarding the whispers? Or is it my end?

Hmmmmmmmmm, interesting. Nice mockup, sherlock! I think that could work if perhaps the whisper is not repeated and only said once, and not having a dramatic musical sting that loud. Just a little thing to show she’s lost in thought a moment as she recalls what the dagger revealed.

I don’t think it’s really necessary to move this to before the quick cockpit scene. Feels to me like something better left alone so as to help the rest of what we’re doing to the scene stand up to scrutiny. (Fewer change-liabilities.)

So Hal, keep it where you see the "speeding falcon/Quick cockpit scene/Finn and Rey.

I do agree to try and work on the whisper sound. Is it playing too loud and causing the distortion? IF anything, I’d have a mix of different whispers that go from quite to mildly loud. That way you still hear finn’s line and there isn’t any sound “corruption” maybe?

It seems to me that the shot is already a little dodgy since it’s just a zoomed in clip of what comes a second or two later. I’d rather go for a subtle reprise of the Sith whisper for a moment before Rey responds to Finn’s inserted question. More of a bunt, I guess.

AH thanks for the explanation. I have to admit … I really don’t remember too much from the movie since I really havn’t sat down and watched it since … it came out? I think? Lol. So a lot of this goes over my head. Hahah!

Just after reading the last page of this thread. I love the idea of Palpatine speaking sith and stuff on paper but we have to use what we have, and while some may disagree with having Palpatine in the movie to begin with, we shouldn’t remove anymore of Ian’s performance.

@jarbear @JarJarBricks

Movies Remastered is in contact with Ian-Luke Production, who can do a voiceover for Palps.

Also, I did find someone who could do a “translation” of his dialogue into the Sith language… 😉

Hmm…I see your point. Less is more, and all of that. Depending on what’s ultimately decided for the Endor Vision, we could structure it like this:

Pryde shoots Hux -> Wipe transition to (part of) the Endor Vision, with Finn’s voice “The Endor System? Are you sure?” over it this time (maybe a bit echo-y?). Then we hear him say “Rey?” (echo-y again) -> Hard cut to the panel exploding -> [Maybe do the added Rey reaction shot? I kind of like the idea that it explodes because she’s zoned out] -> Finn and Rey conversation -> Exterior shot of the Falcon in Hyperspace -> Poe cockpit scene -> Cut to Endor

And I love Burbin’s idea of including a “drop out of hyperspace” sound before they come into frame.

EDIT: I know you’re iffy about swapping the scenes, but I really don’t think we can cut to any sort of “Rey zoning out” scene midway through the sequence. I don’t know how it will flow at all, at least given the footage we have available.
