Unusual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread — Page 84

Tbh I thought that he meant to post in the Worst Ideas Thread and posted it here accidentally. Not because it was a bad idea, I have no idea what that music sounds like. It just seemed like a random idea more along the lines of the Worst Ideas Thread suggestions.

I love those soundtracks, but it does feel like one of those completely out-of-left-field suggestions that the Worst Ideas Thread is comprised of. I’m not saying it couldn’t work, though! I’d watch it.

Yeah it seemed like a joke. Replacing JW’s score with Pokémon music is not a typical suggestion.

I’m working on something that probably fits this: removing most of the original trilogy characters.

Altering Rey from Rey Palpatine to Padawan Rey Solo (Han and Leia’s granddaughter), and moving the whole trilogy another generation into the future (which removes nearly all of the OT characters). Rey is the last survivor of the second Jedi Purge and looking for Luke’s journal which she finds hidden on Tatooine near the homestead (Jakku is now Tatooine) which she hopes can help her restore the Jedi Order.

Kylo Ren is no longer Ben Solo but Rey’s ex-lover who fell to the dark side… you’d be surprised what kind of tension you can get out of this change with some major re-editing of the force connection scenes.

Rose and Finn’s mission is now to find a codebreaker who can slip through the shields at Starkiller Base located on Exogal. The throne room sequence is now edited with the battle over D’Qar; the bombing coincides with the saber breaking.

The climax is now Rey traveling to Exogal giving the Resistance the coordinates and facing off against Kylo, Finn and Rose deactivating the shields, and the Resistance attacking Starkiller Base. All three battles now play off each other.

Luke does make a couple cameo appearances as a force ghost.

As I mentioned in the PT thread, the Deutsch-Grammophon album Across the Stars has violin arrangements of Yoda’s theme, Rey’s theme, Across the Stars and Luke & Leia that could be useful in a rescored edit.

JEDIT: This is a serious suggestion

I just looked these up; I feel like Rey’s theme in particular could be of a lot of use to TROS faneditors.

Yoda’s theme is just exquisite.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Saving it to my playlist. Also, I do see potential in the rendition of Hedwig’s Theme for my Potter edits. The violin would feel a little less out of place there. In Star Wars, violin should probably be kept to a minimum. It feels hearing it lead like this. But we’ll see, if someone wants to make a mockup. The tracks do a have standard Williams orchestra backing it up, so it’s not completely strange. Hearing such intense Williams violin does remind me of Schindler’s List.

In the eternal quest to make Poe and Holdo’s subplot make thematic sense:

Dub Holdo’s “flyboys” line (it’s already a pretty obvious bit of ADR in the theatrical version) with Holdo saying they may have a spy, then back to Poe being impetuous etc.

Then, on the smaller transports, instead of Leia saying Holdo didn’t want to look like a hero (which seems unrelated to the actual events), have her point out that Poe didn’t tell Holdo about the hyperspace tracking - thus actually making what he did impetuous.

This way, the actual theme of the subplot (Poe needs to learn leadership) isn’t undercut by Holdo’s abysmal interpersonal skills and inability to inspire the people she’s leading. Instead, if Poe had just listened to what she was telling him, and more importantly had actually shared his plan with the Resistance he’s supposed to be learning to lead, things would have turned out okay for them. Lesson learned for Poe.

The challenge, of course, is finding audio of Laura Dern and Carrie Fisher that can be dubbed into those scenes as replacement lines. Maybe from another film either was in? Or a press interview/video? Even finding a soundalike as a last resort. Has anyone ever gone searching for anything like this, or is this new ground to scour?

It’s already clear in the actual movie Holdo believed there was a spy, as no one in the Resistance believes that hyperspace tracking even exists.

That’s nowhere in the text of the movie. But I believe it would be easy to contextualise events so that it unequivocally reads as such, rather than one of many post-facto surmises.

It’s called an inference. It does not have to be spelled out to you.

Yes. I’m suggesting making that inference, one of many possible interpretations of the text, into the actual text itself. Leia and Holdo never talk about spies, they talk about following orders and being heroes.

To return to the key topic: has anyone hunted for any useful audio from either Dern or Fisher? Or would I be the first to go looking for this specific purpose?

I don’t think anyone else has looked into finding new sources of ADR lines for Dern or Fisher, at least in this particular way. Even if you can, you run into the problem of if the line will actually fit the tone and inflection that would be appropriate for the sentence you’re trying to construct.

Hmm. I wonder if one of the AI voice generators could be used to make a simple sentence. Understanding how to use that tech is beyond me, though.

It might not work as well, but Commander D’Arcy could be redubbed by another actress, since she is present in both scenes. In her speech she could say something about their possibly being a spy, so their plan must remain top secret. Then, in the transport, she could say how Holdo didn’t know about the hyperspace tracking.

While I’m not sure there are enough Leia lines in the TFA LEGO game for that, I’m sure there will be a lot for both Holdo and her in the upcoming Skywalker Saga LEGO game.

I could check it out though. What exactly did you have in mind for her to say?

Here’s another idea:

When D’Arcy is updating the crew about what has happened, after she says all their leadership except for Leia is gone, the crew moans and groans a little. During this time, we could add a new voice line or two from random crew members asking questions like:

“How did they find us?”
“There must be a spy!”
“What are we going to do?”

Then cut back to D’Arcy, continuing with, “To that end, the chain of command is clear…”

At the very least, something like this can illustrate that the Resistance fear that there might be a spy leaking information to the First Order. Now, Holdo is going to take charge and handle the situation.

Instead of Holdo explicitly mentioning a spy, we might be able to piece together a line like, “The plan, is need to know” or “It’s a need to know plan.” I’m pretty sure she says these words in some shape or from in this scene and throughout the movie, so maybe we could get something that sounds passable. This would also work well because later, when 3PO suggests to Poe that they tell Holdo about their plan, he says, “It’s a need to know plan, and she doesn’t.” So that might help him seem impetuous.

When Leia speaks to Poe, maybe she could just say something like, “Holdo was protecting the light.” You could piece this together from that sentence she says. While it isn’t as clear as what you were suggesting, it might at least remind the audience that she was just trying to protect the Resistance by being cautious about the plan.

Author
Time

Both those ideas could work. Does the Abednego Poe asks about Holdo have any lines? I seem to remember him saying something to Poe, but the screenplay doesn’t have him speak. If so, he’d be easy to dub over, saying something to Poe.

I still think it’s worth watching some Laura Dern movies and seeing if there’s anything useful. I like Laura Dern as an actor so I don’t mind watching a couple movies from her filmography that seem likely to have comments about spies in them.

Even if I found something perfect, it would only strengthen it to do the other suggested changes with the supporting characters as well.

Poe asks if that’s really Admiral Holdo, then the alien says something, and he sort of shrugs his shoulders. Poe gets up and the alien says “Poe”.

Potentially. You would just have to think of words/lines that match the length of what he says. His first line is just two syllables, and then he says “Poe”, which you could potentially change to “No”, “Don’t” I guess.

For the context of the situation, it would probably need to be something about Holdo.

Like, Poe says, “That’s Admiral Holdo? The Battle of Chiron Belt Admiral Holdo?”

The alien could reply with something short, like, “Republic hero”.

Though maybe you could put his lines somewhere else in the scene too, if you wanted it to be more spy-plot relevant.

Author

Wait, does he really say “‘Battle of Chiron Belt’ Admiral Holdo”? I always thought it was “‘Battle of Chiron’-built Admiral Holdo,” referencing the battle that got her the position of Vice-Admiral.

Is this how it felt to be one of the people who thought Rey asked Kylo to put on a towel??

Lol, yeah, I checked again and he asks “The Battle of Chyron Belt Admiral Holdo?”

Haha, I have never heard someone interpret that line that way. 😂

EDIT: There might be some value for the alien calling Holdo a war hero. Since there’s a theme about being a hero vs being a leader, it might be interesting to emphasize that she used to be a hero just like Poe. Which might be why she sort of likes Poe despite his flaws.

Dub Snoke with the voice of an old woman to further distinguish him her from Palpatine. They actually considered making Snoke a woman when making TFA. Does anyone ever refer to Snoke with male pronouns? Those would have to be fixed.
