A while back I proposed on Hal’s thread that Rey’s parents be changed from noble people to shitty people who thought their daughter was worthless because she was a Palpatine and they feared of what she’d become, preserving the reveal from TLJ and Rey’s arc that needed to stop caring about her parents because they thought she was worthless.

Aside from changing Ochi’s ship to a different one in the TFA scene while keeping Ochi’s ship the same in the actual TRoS, is this plausible?

Now, JJB did point out that Rey needed a motivation to further into the dark side so the ritual would work, but I did propose that Palpatine either kill Leia or taunt Rey that he killed her, something along those lines.

Rey is a nobody in my cut so I feel her connection to her parents can remain pure. I do wanna change the fact they “sold her” though. That part doesn’t sound like caring parents, IMO.

Ochi’s ship can be changed but you’ll have to find a 3d model online of what you’re looking for. To build a new ship from scratch would take way too long for such a short clip. Maybe message Howard Day on YouTube?

There’s a lot of ideas going around but how would they actually be executed with the footage we have? I’d be interested to see any mock-ups.

On a personal note (I don’t care about what books/comics/tweets/media posts … the movie(s) important aspects should be clear … especially at the END OF A SAGA) when it comes to this whole silly transfer thing (I won’t go on a rant, even though I am fundamentally against it, like most of this trilogy to be fair) but I kinda don’t see the point of any “motivation” on Rey’s part for the whole … ritual thingy … of needing hate because just look at Rey during that scene. Was she angry? Was she spiteful?

Nah.

She was in a position to do an action to save her friends and the resistance, she had to strike him down … but she clearly didn’t want to do it. Just look at her face during that. She didn’t want to do it at all. She basically had a gun to her head.

SO to me, the whole “need to do it with hate to strike him down” concept is kinda of dumb. Even on screen, it doesn’t matter or really even try to prove that point or reinforce it. Again, look at Rey. Tell me at one point when she was about to/thinking about striking him (prior to knowing Ben was with her before she could change her action) she was hot with rage and couldn’t WAIT to strike him.

Nope.

To me, keep it simple, strike down the emperor and the stuff transfer. How the person … feels about it … doesn’t matter.

For a Rey Nobody edit, for sure, remove anything about her parents would be great and certainly would make things a lot cleaner … but one would have to do something about the ship.

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

The “Force-sensitive killer having to be tempted by the dark side and kill in anger” thing is supposed to explain why Palpatine can no longer return or did not possess Rey after his death, it is also supposed to be part of Palpatine’s initial plan to have Kylo Ren kill Rey to further himself into the dark side and prove himself worthy of the ritual.

Also, who’s Howard Day?

It occurs to me that, technically, we have actually gotten a deleted scene released, albeit a short, unfinished one:

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

Another take on “Luke was afraid.” I think the most elegant solution is just to cut around the line (if it matters to you, which it does me), but this is a slightly different, more technical approach. https://streamable.com/iejavt

I was tossing around the idea of outright ditching the whole ending exchange. “Who are you? Rey who?” That nonsense. I honestly think the movie would be stronger with that line just cut outright. For one, it allows the epilogue at the Lars homestead to play out without any dialogue at all - whether you love or hate the line (I find it massively cringey myself), I think it would make for a really beautiful ending to the saga to do it entirely with the iconic visuals and the John Williams score.

Also, what’s the theme that’s portrayed by Rey calling herself “Skywalker”? The lesson of the film? The moral of the story? “Rather than be defined by the sins of your family, you can just pretend to not be related to them”? Does anyone find that lesson powerful? Let alone poignant?

The other benefit would be how much more depth could then be applied to the title of the film. If she calls herself “Rey Skywalker,” then “the rise of Skywalker” seems to refer pretty literally to Rey assuming the family name. If, however, Rey doesn’t outright claim to be a Skywalker, then there are so many other possible interpretations that could be made, such as:

  • The galaxy “rising” up in the name of Skywalker
  • Ben Solo-Skywalker rising above the Darkness and choosing the Light
  • Ben Solo-Skywalker ascending to Jedi Heaven
  • Rey choosing to follow in the Skywalker legacy (visually, not audibly, represented by them appearing to her)
  • The spirit, the metaphorical soul of Luke Skywalker rising above the Emperor’s darkness.
  • What the legend of “Skywalker” means to the galaxy
  • etc. etc. etc.

There are so many new and wonderful interpretations that could be made. It would be beautiful, and insightful, and poetic. It would stick in the mind as something worth pondering. “What does “Rise of Skywalker” truly mean?”

Or Rey can just say “I’m a Skywalker!!” and trot along into the sunset. That’s deep too.

I think those other interpretations are still valid regardless of the end scene. I imagine the original idea was to write a title which had multiple interpretations relevant to the movie. It reminds me of Return of the Jedi - is it the Jedi Luke Skywalker returning to save Han Solo and defeat the Empire; the Jedi inside Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker, returning to save his son; or is it the implication that in the wake of the Empire’s defeat Luke can now go on to start a new Jedi Order? It’s all three, right.

With all the mentions of using lines for Luke to say. Or even Kylo.

Has anyone sought out an impressionist?

I wanted/want to get one to add a line of dialogue for Palpatine to mention Exegol to his loyalists on the death star.

All it would take is one good impressionist and one person who knows how to mix audio get it pretty seamless.

Agreed. I’m just highlighting the fact that there are other interpretations, since I previously suggested removing this part on a different thread, but I was met with “The whole point of the title is Rey taking the Skywalker name.”

So, like, are there any reasons to keep the exchange? I mean, if people like it, then fine; but given how meme-ed it’s been, it seems like it’s earned more mockery than praise.

Is anybody familiar with moving audio lines to the side while still keeping the music intact? I’m trying to remove Rey grabbing the books in the middle of the Resistance meeting discussing Palpatine’s message for the following reasons:

  1. Rey’s lightsaber is seen prominently on her even though she just gave it to Leia.
  2. The Jedi texts were left by Rey on a crate, but when she returns to them they are suddenly in the box.
  3. A line plays in the background that is contradictory to the original trilogy. It suggests that the galaxy always knew about Palpatine’s Force abilities.

Any help would be appreciated in this endeavor. If we can get this working right I think Hal would be more interested in it.

Remember when Rey reminded Luke of his redemption of Vader and his immediate response after that “he became a legend” (the inference being that the galaxy learned of it post-OT)? Think of it in that way.

Is it possible to make post-“dyad rejuvenation” Palpatine have the same pale eyes as before he sucked out Rey and Ben’s life force instead of having your typical Sith eyes? Just throwing an idea.

I don’t doubt it’d be doable, that’s not the issue. The first thing to try would be to edit out the portions of relevant audio from the channels in which it appears, then cover that with stuff from other channels. Sometimes you can get more mileage out of adding audio from multiple other channels to avoid a direct repeat of just one channel.

My stance on revising fan edits.

This thinking would work, but the problem is that the line specifically says the word always. If that word weren’t included in the line, there would be no issue. But with it there, the idea is that people have, well, always considered the idea that Palpatine is trying to cheat death. Since he was considered a normal dude until post-ROTJ, this line is blatantly false unless you wish to contradict established canon.

I am not an expert by any stretch of my imagination, but I would try to find out which music was used for this scene and use it to replace the audio you cut. Especially when it comes to Star Wars there’s no track you can’t find.

“Vader! Hologram, now!”
