The most I did for Y2K, was buy some extra batteries (think I got 2 extra packs of AAs).

Turns out I was 3 years early on the purchase...I got to use some of them a few months ago when practically the entire Northeast US was blacked out.
I will never forget THAT day.

Nothing happened back then, it was quite insane to say that the "planes would fall" and that the "society would colapse" because some old mainframe computers, who run payroll systems in old companies, suddenly pirnted the years 00. Now, a REAL problem will happen when we get to the year 10,000. I predict airplane falling and society colapses. I'd recomend everyone to buy a lot of batteries, canned food and guns, LOTS of guns. I mean, it's scary, isn't it? So go on and buy guns, so you can feel safe about it! And it's not me talking, it's Moses himself! The "soylent green" dude! The guy from planet of the apes! He said do!
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

I think it is sort of dumb to take any of these "world will end" disaster theories seriously. It just a stupid waste of time. Most of the people who come up with "global cooling', Y2K and "global warming"--all this world-wide disaster nonsense--are just looking for attention that they can't get in a legitimate way.

They need to get off the mediocrity pills (like me.)

I think people should just live their lives. If they are going to die or the world is going to end, so be it. Don't live your life trying to prepare for some fictionalized end of days. If you're going to die, you're going to die. I doubt you'll ever be able to stop it.

There's nothing wrong with preparing for emergency situations, if and when they arise, but to spend your whole life focused on such preparation is paranoid and verging on the insane. A life lived in fear is a life half-lived.

Emergency situations, that's fine. First Aid kit. Fire extinguisher. Carbon monoxide detector. An emergency barrel. Go for it.

But investing in Y2K survival guides. Stocking your basement with 10 years worth of canned goods. Closing all your bank accounts. Moving away from the expected "strike zone" of a meteor. Moving inland to avoid the "inevitability" of California sinking into the ocean. These "preventative measures" are just ridiculous.

here are my though's ont he subject. personally i think it is a scare. ill used some of the stats they used to prove my point. they said that in the last 100 years the temperature has risen 0.6 degrees celsius. they also said that for the greenland ice sheet to melt the temperature of the earth must rise and additional 3.0 degrees celsius. now if the temperature keep rising at the same rates as it is now, it will take 500 years for that temperature to be reached. I also read a stat a long time ago when i was researching this topic for school that stated that 75% of the earths rise in temperature is not due to mankind, it came from animals such as cows, and from the earths own geometric activety and also possiblely from the earths own trend that it is warming up since the alst ice age.
now in may opinion looking back at the last 100 years and looking at what we are doing now i think that this 0.6 incement is going to get smaller. all you have to do it look at what we are doing today. cars are being made that produce much smaller amounts of pollution. we are moving to other mroe efficent power sources instead of burning oil and coal. (e.g. wind, hydro, and nuclear). all new technologies that come out now are producing less pollution that the technology that came before them.

on another note, i think that mankind should worry about ozone depletion and the diseases that are cause by pollution, then global warming.

the way i see it is that if there is a freak ice age or a nuclear winter or and astroid, would won really want to live through all the aftermath. all ypou would see and feel is suffering. the way i feel is that if something happens, it happens unless i am in a very high potion there is a very low chance that i will be able to stop it so why freat over something that you know you cant not change.

If there was a freak ice age, I doubt that we in our comfy homes would have much to worry about. I mean think about it for a second. We have heaters, blankets, all the necessitys we would need for a long time to come. Even if it required living in communal homes like the vikings of old, we would still survive. Life may not be the same it always was, but being human equates to the ability to survive.

And personally, I think snow year round would be pretty cool.

Actually Bossk, people are at least partially responsible for the global warming. The companies have helped cut down on the depletion of the ozone layer by no longer adding chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) to their aerosol sprays. Unfortunately, that's the only thing that has changed. There are plenty of people who still send most of their garbage to a landfill and litter the rest on the ground. In either case, that garbage turns to methane over time and poisons both your ground water and the air you breathe. All of this could be avoided, but unfortunately, there are still far too many people in the world who don't give a rat's ass. Thus, Mother Earth is purging her problem. The human race!

I suppose we should get rid of cows, as their farts also do a number of the ozone layer.

The human race is the first known intelligence lifeform to exist on the Earth. I believe we are smart enough that we will find a way to survive whatever happens.

and i think that in the next 50 years we will probably change our ways so that we do not pollute some much. and in like another 20 years some smart ass is going to figure out a way to take the harmful chemicals out of the atmosphere.
