I just find the notion of selling your kid into endless slavery as a means of protection to be a really problematic concept to take seriously, especially when it’s so quickly brushed over with just a single line and a rushed flashback.

I don’t believe that was ever meant to be a permanent arrangement. Pretty sure their intentions were to leave her there for a year to a couple years until this Sith assassin stops chasing them down so aggressively. At that point they would have come back for her, but of course they got murdered.

Yeah, that’s totally fair, even if a touch contrived, although… what isn’t in TROS? lol

I suppose if nothing else the whole sequence just seems like a huge reach on the part of Abrams and Terrio to try and quickly retcon away why we saw her as a kid with Unkar Plutt in TFA, while still also somehow making her bloodline important following TLJ.

JEDIT: Although I do like the general concept of her parents being between a rock and a hard place, it feels kinda bland to have Kylo’s “… To protect you.” line completely close the door on any sort of moral wrestling that may still be attached to Rey’s parents and their ultimate decision. It all feels like something the individual viewer should have the final say on per viewing, instead of it just being outright explained with little ambiguity.

JEDIT2: And just for clarity - I absolutely love TLJ and the way it seemingly sets things up for IX. So some (but not all) of the retcon-y moments in TROS really bum me out, evidently lol
