It was renewed for season 5 and 6 and that will be the end. There is a 30 year time jump in the books after the sixth, so that’s a good place to stop actually.

In my opinion, each season has been better than the previous. The Expanse is less of an action sci-fi and more of a drama. It’s very much a sci-fi setting and is frequently praised for its scientific accuracy, but it’s an exploration of people.

Thank you for your comments, Rodney. I will stick with it.
With the first trilogy, I found the first third alright, with stellar effects.
S02 was better in almost every way, and S03 was a superb capper.

With S04, the series seemed to backstep, rebuilding as it were.
I realize the show is character driven, but characters on the new colony and their conflicts bored me.
Fortunately, the producers are working from “published” works, so I am hoping to avoid the disappointment that was GoT.

Back half of season 3 and all of Season 4 is probably my favorite Expanse “era.” While I do think it wasn’t nearly as tight as its preceding seasons, I really really liked the system-shifting-to-a-new-status-quo perspectives we took on. So even if Ilus’ characters didn’t do much for me, I was still engaged and fascinated by its implications on the other subplots. The way every sociopolitical element intersected painted my favorite picture of this world. It felt like The Expanse universe at its most “real” and complete.

I do believe S05 was much better than S04. It balances a lot of story pretty well IMO. S06 was confirmed and will be the last season. Each season is based on one of the books and this is a good ending point. The next 2 books are based 30 years in the future.
