I imagine the Luke figure batting fire toward the walker would be the best bet for about a second of footage followed by laughter. If Luke vanished without reappearing it may seem like the children are laughing at the defeat of this traitorous Jedi figure.

I definitely like that idea as well. For the “disappearing act” perhaps have him reappear after the laser/fire has been dodged?

Your idea is probably the easiest to execute, though.

So you guys are apparently discussing an idea of Rey turning to see the children watching a puppet show of Luke’s actions in TLJ; I disagree with this. Why, you may ask?

The point of the scene with the Aki Aki children is to establish the stakes for the movie, to drive home our connection with the galaxy (especially in the context of this film alone) and show what the heroes are really fighting for; reducing it to a payoff of the events of TLJ undermines that.

I’ve been trying all morning to remove the puppets but the texture of the background material and the wind movements are proving extremely difficult to mimic. That little thing it throws and the stick is really tricky too…

I don’t see how that would be the case at all. I read the scene as hammering home how Rey grew up orphaned and without a sense of community. She sees a communal experience with children laughing together and is then asked her family name, to which she has to admit she has none.

Star Wars hasn’t really ever cared about tying stakes to anything solid; it’s always been abstract or related to the main characters’ own connections, from Alderaan to Naboo and ever on.

Tying this moment to the Battle of Crait isn’t a payoff, it’s carrying that idea forward. We see how the legend leads to a revival and rise of Skywalker that coincides with Rey taking the name. It is thematically important for this film, building on the previous one, which makes it even more valuable IMHO.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Agreed, I think showing him disappearing and then the children laughing gives off the wrong impression

My man, it seems like you enjoy TROS as-is the most. If I had to take a guess, there are already a bunch of different things in the current changelog that you disagree with. Have you ever considered that perhaps the best version of TROS for you is the original? Ok, maybe that’s taking it a bit far. But that’s just the impression I’ve been getting from you lately.

Everybody else here thinks the Luke puppet show is thematically extremely important (y’know, given that the title is “The Rise of Skywalker”). It’s alright to have your own opinion, but if you disagree with this change there is always v1 of this edit as well.

I like this idea. I’d love to see the Luke puppet brush the dust off his shoulder, eliciting a laugh from the children.

If that was possible to do, it would work perfectly for the kid’s laughing.

Man, I’m looking forward to what you madlads can do with real props and filming. Holy shit.

Wait!? Real props and filming? Okay, I’ll admit, I really haven’t been paying much attention to the thread due to completing the next audiobook in my Harry Potter series, but are we literally about to start going the Adywan route here for V2?

My intention was always to try and film a scene of Rey building her Saber using Luke and Leia’s Crystals and now reshooting two dice shots with kylo ten. Adywan is most definately an inspiration.

How is that even possible? Hiring actors and deepfaking them?

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

I had the same thought, but I can’t imagine how you’d convey this so quickly.

What’s so funny about the original puppet thing anyway? Seemed like they were chucking a kid into the fire.

For the puppet thing, I think the simplest action would be for the fire to fly from the AT-AT, and the Luke reflects it back at the walker, knocking the whole walker away. This action makes the kids laugh. Since the story is being passed along word-of-mouth, the facts could be embellished.

Or the fire just floats in between them and puppet Luke dances around mockingly. I don’t know if a puppet brushing his shoulder would be feasible or clear to understand.

It is a very very brief shot. Not even two full seconds I don’t think. So it shouldn’t be too complicated.

I know Chase said he could film it, but I think I could make the puppets and film this too, if someone could just make a clean plate to put it on.

And speaking of Luke’s legend sparking hope in the galaxy, I wonder if you could somehow make it clearer that people of Kijimi are revolting against the First Order. The patrols, stormtroopers going door-to-door questioning people, the distant explosions later on during Poe and Zorri’s convo. Though that might contradict Poe’s whole speech about people giving up.

MR is working on that but he said he is having a few technical difficulties. His post is somewhere above.

That’s an interesting idea … especially since it seems like that’s kind of what is going on. From Poe’s perspective, he thinks people has given up BECAUSE of his experience from Crait … which is completely understandable on his viewpoint from that specific event. However, because of Luke’s “legendary” appearance, it has sparked hope so now people are beginning to “raise up” which is also reinforced later in the movie with Lando & Crew of 1000tm and the destruction of FO star destroyers around the galaxy.

What a shame from the original cut.

However, what kind of adjustments could work for that? I don’t remember the dialogue very well in that scene to make those adjustments. If possible.

Yeah, I was going to film it in the style of the deleted OT scene when Luke builds his, Kinda over-the-shoulder feel with a close-up on the hands and Saber but Covid put a stop to that. Hopefully, still be able to film something in July. The Kylo shots I’m doing myself, Just waiting on the Dice to clear customs. I’ve got a guy making me a pair by hand.

This is around 8 hours of work so far on the Puppet removal. It’s really tricky to get the pattern of the material looking like it hasn’t been clone stamped and mimicking the wind blowing in the background. It’s probably going to take another 10 mask layers to get right…

My goodness, it is shaping up though because yeah, the wind and material would be a son-of-a-rancor to work with!

Might be too much work, but since Zorri wears a mask the whole time, we could redub her to fit whatever new narrative we wanted. For example, we could have her say Poe was just working as a spice runner undercover for the Republic, which is why Zorri is so pissed off at Poe (and would help alleviate some of the stereotype issues of making the Latino character a former drug runner.)

When Poe asks how long Kijimi has been like this, she could say not long after Crait or Skywalker. And when Poe starts getting down in the dumps about people losing hope, Zorri could tell him that these people have actually regained hope and are resisting.

And I don’t think the mask has to be perfect MR. Once we have puppets there, it’ll probably distract from any imperfections. Plus, it’s such a short shot anyway.

MR, your efforts are much appreciated. Thank you. I’m sure you’ll get there eventually.

At least the clip is only a second or so long, otherwise we would be in a real pickle right now.

I really really love this puppet idea, so so much… but please do not cut the closeup of that cute little laughing alien baby, whatever you do!!!

That laughing baby is legitimately one of my favorite things in this movie. And this whole puppet thing as a nod to C3PO doing storytime with the Ewoks in ROTJ was a real nice touch as well. Can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

Easy fix:

Add a tv monitor that plays the clip Luke dusting off his shoulders.

Boom.

Wow, MR, I’m beginning to worry about you. That looks insane. I’m sure the rest can be covered by foreground puppets or objects.

And lol @ just having them watch TLJ on a CRT.
