Prediction for Star Wars X, XI, and XII — Page 2

How would a reboot even go? If you were going to start over, you may as well smooth over the incredibly rocky continuity to the point that the plot would be quite different. And if you’re going to boil it down to its archetypal elements, why not just tell a new story using them?

My stance on revising fan edits.

They’ll keep doing soft reboots (I count TFA as a soft reboot), but I highly doubt a hard reboot or official multiverse will ever happen. They’ll just play around with different parts of the timeline. The traditional story structure and tropes will mostly remain the same, though. Some “new” Sith or offbrand Sith will emerge and the Jedi will be sparse or almost extinct, being still regarded as mythical figures of the past.

But we can’t turn back. Fear is their greatest defense. I doubt if the actual security there is any greater than it was on Aquilae or Sullust. And what there is is most likely directed towards a large-scale assault.

I’ve wondered if they will eventually retell the entire story in animation.

I really think that they should loosen up on canon, or have multiple different continuities or something like that. Not in the same way as Marvel or DC, though. Maybe they should have no official canon, but a few continuity projects. I don’t know.

But with a fandom so big and so diverse as the Star Wars fandom, having one official continuity is an awful idea. I mean, for one, there might not have been such a poor reaction to the prequels or TLJ if they weren’t the only backstory for Darth Vader, or the only continuation of Luke’s story. If other people could try their hands at those stories, people wouldn’t care if this one particular one wasn’t right for them.

Especially if Lucasfilm wants to treat Star Wars like a modern mythology. There is technically a Sherlock Holmes canon, and a Robin Hood canon, and a King Arthur canon, but they don’t behave the same way that Star Wars’s canon does. They’re a central group of ideas and stories from which other stories radiate out from.

I like what you’re thinking. Really, what we have right now is the worst of both worlds. We have a bunch of content that’s all considered hard canon, yet is rife with contradictions. Either Star Wars should have an airtight canon, and if it can’t accomplish that (which it can’t), then it should open itself up fully to alternate interpretations and retellings, like actual myths and legends. That looser approach might even help bring some of that old fantasy element back to the franchise.

I can’t prove it, but my feeling is that there is a silent majority of Star Wars fans that are desperately waiting for Disney to reboot the damn PT!

Certainly a lot of Boomers or GenXers probably feel this way. Maybe the older millennials too.

Back in 2012, I would have been fully on board with that idea. Now, though, I don’t trust Disney and Lucasfilm to fare any better than George did.

Also, the zoomers would revolt.

Screw the actual quality of the prequels or their hypothetical reboot, the angry zoomers alone would be worth it.

They should reboot the whole saga but then write them in a way that TLJ means is still part VIII.

What the hell is a zoomer?

Gen Z. The one after millennials.

I don’t think they should or would change the canon. It would be much more easy two have 2 different canons if the old EU was continued in a different adjacent timeline. The could even adapt some of the comics, and novels into animation under the Legends imprint.

Would the original cuts of the OT also count as Legends? Since the Maclunky edit is the official canon along with Han shooting second.

Yeah, I personally consider the original versions as the “Legends cuts” of the movies (at least pre-PT Legends). The Thrawn trilogy books are sequels to those versions of the films.

I don’t think Episodes X-XII should ever happen, but my marketing instinct tells me the Postquel Trilogy is inevitable.

My family already calls the ST “the Postquels,” so I’ve gotten used to calling them that out loud. So I guess the next ones will be the Post-Postquels lol

But yeah, I think you’re right.

Actually, I used to think Episodes 10-12 were inevitable, but now I don’t. Lucasfilm is definitely going to be putting more time into Disney+ shows from here on out, and while both spinoff movies were outperformed by all three ST movies, I don’t think that has anything to do with them being spinoffs. It just doesn’t look like they have a reason to make an Episode 10.

Just give it time, it is inevitable. Like there was no interest in the Matrix after the trilogy and 20 years later there will be a fourth one. I’m surprised if there is no Episode X in the next 50 years. At the same time I really don’t want it to happen.

I agree with LexX. While Sparky does have a point, it’s seeing things in the real short term.

Nah, I’m thinking long term. The film industry is not heading in a direction where a fourth Star Wars trilogy would be as profitable as the prequels and sequels were. Lucasfilm would make just as much profit, if not more, from spinoff movies and streaming shows.
