100% Despecialized. Actually I first saw the special editions and not knowing that that actually wasnt the original version of the movies and when I first found out about Despecialized I had to track it down and It was my go to version until I got 4K77 and 4K83 although I still watch Despecialized

Then, after the Blu-ray came out, I heard about the new changes, and saw the clip of Vader shouting “Nooo!” in RotJ. That was the last straw for me regarding the Special Editions. I had accepted every change up until then, but that one was just too much. So I stuck with my 2006 discs for the longest time, only getting the Blu-rays so I could enjoy Harmy’s works of art.

I do remember VHS lol. In the early 2000s, my family would go to the local video store every other Friday and rent one of the OT films to watch. The store had two copies of each movie: the 1995 THX version with the faces on the box, and the 1997 Special Editions. We would often go back and forth on which versions we watched, and we thought it was neat that we had options. My two siblings and I would always argue over which to rent, since each of us had a different favorite of the trilogy (mine being Star Wars, of course).

Well to me I would have to say the first original theatrical trilogy versions that came out on vhs or dvd the picture and colours was grainy and dull but to me I adds to the retro feel of the films like when they first cam out. I NOT REALLY a fan of all these digital reworking of the original trilogy like how the prequels where made with too much digital seen even Mark Hamill had said that its a different type of non connectedness with the character that you dialogue with. I Agree with him completely.

I’m a historical purist. Give me all films (not just Star Wars) as they were seen by audiences in their original theatrical runs, warts and all. If there are multiple versions (like the 70mm vs 35mm ESB), include both so I watch each version. If there are later re-edited special editions or director’s cuts or whathaveyou, include those too. Film history is important and various iterations of a film should be properly preserved and made available to anyone who wishes to see them.
As for the original Star Wars Trilogy, I prefer the 4KXX versions both because they are the highest quality restorations (official or not) and, more importantly, they are the most “pure”. Meaning they are sourced as much as humanly possible from original, pre-special edition, film prints. They aren’t reconstructions that try to mimic the original (as amazing as Harmy’s work has been), they ARE the original. But, of course, 4K80 isn’t complete yet…
So yeah, I definitely prefer the original cuts to any version of the SE. But if I’m going to watch an SE, I don’t mind the ‘97 or the brand new ‘19 versions. The 2005 dvd and 2011(?) blu ray versions are pure and utter garbage that I’ll never watch.

I grew up in the “Prequel Era”, however my best memories are watching original VHS copies of the films. The Despecialized Editions are by far the better cuts to me. Everything that makes Star Wars special is in those cuts. The only change I actually like, and it’s a minor one, is the celebration song on Endor. I absolutely love the version they inputted into the Special Editions. That said, it’s minor enough that the every Despecialized Edition, to me, is head and shoulders above the Special Edition edits.
Poor you. You missed out on what was (probably) one the greatest experiences of my life you dont know what it was like to be in theatre when it the originals first cam out.

The unaltered cuts are more aesthetically consistent and flow better, and overall they hold up incredibly well without revisions.

Despecialized hands down. Every one of the SE (and especially the DVD/HD versions movies) has at least one change that ruins the movie for me.
Your Correct. I get you and agree with you absoulutly Though I did like the “Cloud City Flyover” and entering “Mos Eisely” on Lukes Speeder but those are THE ONLY changes (or additions) ill ever admit to out of all three of O.T. films.

Personally though I prefer Despecialized for the most part. The SE has some fun bits with it such as the redone dogfight from ANH, seeing Ian McDiarmid in ESB and other stuff like the shockwave rings for both times the Death Star was destroyed but aside from maybe ESB which is the most untouched with the changes serving mostly good purposes? Both ANH and ROTJ have that one change, that one big change that for me just makes it to where I can’t watch them without wincing. In ANH it’s all the Mos Eisley stuff, in ROTJ it’s Jedi Rocks and Darth Vader yelling no before lifting up the Emperor.

Im totally understanding. However they did the almost thing to Blade Runner although it is good in some respects I still do like the original version better even if it does have the narration over it and I like the original ending better as well

I’m not a strict purist, so I don’t mind the idea of older films being tweaked or visually polished in small ways
I’ve changed my mind since I wrote this. I want all the original compositing work, too. As much as I love D+77 and Despecialized, you’re aware as you’re watching them that they’re hybrid versions, and it’s apparent when they switch between original and SE sources. I don’t mind things like mild DNR or AI processing to enhance an image as long as the sources are theatrically authentic. In particular, I really like 4K83 Remastered for that reason.
