You knew my father?
Here’s my take on an underappreciated facet of Star Wars and the world for kids in 1977.
There was a huge explosion in divorce in the early 1970’s and society really wasn’t prepared for it.
I’ll give you an example, my parents got divorced and my dad wanted to see our report cards. There were no policies for this sort of thing. He was told the custodial parent got it haveaniceday. Off to court he went, he had a right to see our report cards without going through his ex-wife.
There were a lot of kids growing up largely without dads.
I feel that the scene with Luke and Ben really resonated for a lot of us, even though being 8,9,10, 11 years old we weren’t really consciously aware of it…it spoke to us.
That scene in Ben’s house, when you’re a ten year old kid that’s when you get up to go pee, get some more popcorn, whatever. It’s a slow scene.
“You knew my father?” Yeah, our butts stayed in our seats, Luke was us.
