I thought I’d make this quick clip to break those shots up.

I really like the effect! But one thing feels off to me: The Falcon is going from right to left, then Poe is looking left to right, and then the Falcon exits hyperspace right to left. I feel like it throws off the screen direction of the sequence - we know the Falcon is facing left, but Poe is looking in the opposite direction. Consequentially, it feels like Poe is sitting backwards in the Falcon, like he’s facing the rear.

(Frankly, this is pretty sloppy in the J.J. Cut too; but it’s lessened a bit by the next shot being with Finn. So the feeling is less “J.J. goofed up the edit,” and more “Wow, there’s a lot of commotion right now. Which way do I look?”)

I wonder if it might work better if the Poe clip is mirrored? Given how quickly the clip passes, I don’t think it would be super noticeable. Heck, Doctor Who did that very thing with Big Ben. And that was freaking Big Ben.

Seconded!

Hopefully his radio silence means he’s getting rest.

But if you’re awake, MR, what do you think of this new Star Wars clip?

I agree. I did try that but it then makes Poes face look weird and he’s then sitting in the wrong chair, I then switched the Falcon scene but then the satellite is on the wrong side. I’m putting this down to another JJ booboo and not mine 😉

Anyone here with Premiere having issues trying to use this? Not sure if it’s the avi wrapper or whatever codec was used.

Same goes for Luka Frik’s lightsaber clips. Wonder if Premiere just doesn’t play well with .avi? Anyone know?

DUDE! Don’t even get me started. Something has happened this year and I can’t play anything back IRT using VLC, Premiere, or AF. I have to either convert the file or upload it to youtube to see them play properly. I’m losing my S***.

Let’s see if you either start going crazy, or go further crazy … like me!

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

I just finished going through the list of changes for Ascendant while planning the changes I’ll be making to the movie in my own edit, and I’m confused on the change:

Added a small bit of score from ROTS as Palpatine absorbs the power of Rey and Ben’s friendship (Cinefy idea)

Could you specify what music is used? I tried comparing the scene in the original movie and Ascendant v1 and they sounded the same to me

There’s a short bit from ROTS, I believe it kicks in right as Palpatine first reacts with an “ugch” as he first tries to shock the duo following “stand together, due together.”

My stance on revising fan edits.

Oh okay, I hear the difference in that scene, yeah it goes from when he first gets shocked by the dyad power to when he starts fully sapping it.

Do you know when in ROTS it’s taken from / which track?

I’ll download this tomorrow to check the format, but if the codec is something big like animation or uncompressed, I would highly recommend using Hal’s method of converting it to prores.

I think someone mentioned it’s .avi? If you’re on macOS, that format is generally not as compatible (regardless of Premiere, Final Cut, etc.). I’d simply recommend transcoding it first, to whatever format you’ve been using for everything else.

Oh yeah maybe it’s a Mac thing. Hmm. Do people have go to conversion/transcoding softwares they use?

Handbrake is a good free one that can transcode most formats to H.264, which is then usable by any 64bit NLE (Premiere Pro CC, FCPX, DaVinci Resolve, etc.), but you may one to put it through compressor to transcode to Apple ProRes 422 LT to use in FCP7 or other 32bit apps.

Thanks. Typically I use Handbrake or just Adobe Media Encoder. Will have to see what works.

I typically use FFmpeg for conversions. It’s a bit more confusing to use than Handbrake, but I find that it’s faster, and the output is generally a higher quality too. Another benefit over Handbrake is that Handbrake will try to re-transcode the entire video; whereas FFmpeg can simply repackage the video and audio tracks into any other format container. In other words, it can convert your file to a compatible file type without losing any video quality.

If you just need to convert it from .avi to, for example, .mp4, you can do that really easily and quickly with this command (remove the square brackets and add the file name):

ffmpeg -i "[source file].avi" -c:v copy -c:a copy "[output file].mp4"

(In layman’s terms, this means “Run FFmpeg. Use [source file].avi as the input file. Copy the video and audio tracks without transcoding them, and output them into [output file].mp4”)

If you need to convert the audio codec - aac audio tends to work well when I’m editing - you could do that with:

ffmpeg -i "[source file].avi" -c:v copy -c:a:1 aac "[output file].mp4"

(Run FFmpeg. Use [source file].avi as the input file. Copy the video track without transcoding it. Convert the 1st audio track to .aac, and output the video and the audio track into [output file].mp4")
