The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released) — Page 336

Since you’re planning on adding Vader’s Castle front and center, would you reconsider name dropping Mustafar in the opening crawl? It just feels off considering how little relevance it has in the movie, compared to previous named planets - Hoth in TESB, Tatooine in RotJ, Naboo in TPM & Jakku in TFA.

I gotta say, this Parler twist is making me laugh out loud. Wow.

I dunno, it should never be funny when something like that turns up, mostly just disappointing. Or alarming, depending on how dangerous you consider it.

But also, taking things a step further by having donations fund a fan project is a bad idea. You can argue what is and isn’t transformative all you like, but ultimately they ARE using a copyrighted intellectual property and taking money to make something with it, and in this corporate plutocracy, if Disney sends a DMCA, that’s it.

Worse, it would set a precedent for removing all sorts of fanworks, since those are using that same property. Doesn’t matter if they’re free. We see this with Nintendo all the time, and their lawyers are bad enough. You think Disney’s are gonna be better?

So yeah, even removing the political aspect (which, to be clear, you shouldn’t remove that aspect), there’s no way they aren’t some kind of threat to the community.

Anyway, hello everyone! I made an account just to follow this edit, especially the development of Rey Nobody. I think TROS is one of the bigger fixer-uppers in the franchise and I’ve loved seeing what’s been done with it.

EDIT: wait. why does my name have an N at the end instead of a D?

Yeah, messing with their material stands to violate the prime directive and be trashy. Let’s leave them to it.

I kind of like naming Mustafar in the crawl, so I wouldn’t remove it. It still wouldn’t be clear what planet it is to someone only watching through the main film series otherwise. It is only Rogue One that shows us this location.

My stance on revising fan edits.

The somewhat scummy, morally gray legality of what they’re doing is a tricky situation. So I’m already looking at them funny and rolling my eyes a little from that. And now this with Parlor. My jaw is dropped and the dots are very much connected.
And, so, I don’t know how else to react to it other than to just laugh at how shocking and ridiculous it is to me. Which isn’t me saying that it’s a laughing matter, which is very much is not… for a multitude of obvious reasons!

They honestly seem like the type of people that would solely blame the “deep state” if their content ever got removed by Disney and/or they got sued. Even though what they’re doing via donations is definitely an offense worthy enough to warrant such an action and is completely unrelated to that conspiracy.

So the whole I**n Ort*ga situation all over again?

Pretty much. Except arguably worse because of their beliefs concerning censorship (even if it is warranted).

So … any mad skilled editors able to age/ruinize Vader’s castle?

Question for Hal: if the fly-by close-up shot of Vader’s Castle in your last preview ultimately isn’t able to be improved by anyone here (through aging the building, addition of trees, smoother effects, etc), would you still want to add it to v2 as is? Or would you just stick with the forest flyover?

I said before that all that shot needs at minimum is to have the lava windows darkened. If nobody is willing to try doing that, I may have to set aside some time this month to learn how!

Since you reminded me, I went ahead and replaced the DOTF snippet with the actual OST in higher quality. I put it in place where it was, and extended it backward to the beginning of the track.
What do you guys think? Too heavy?

Great improvement, Hal! Close to perfection and not too heavy, could even be a little more prominent in the mix, but I know there’s been a ton of back-and-forth on that here already.

Cinefy, I may slightly prefer your version of the cue at this point simply because the music is given more time to play out. The looping you utilized doesn’t stick out at all with the atmospheric sound effects at the levels they are now.

Solid. Looks good to me.

Perfect! I personally don’t think the shot NEEDS anything else, but it wouldn’t hurt to try putting some cracks in the castle. Again, as far as I’m concerned, that should be final, though. Thank you.

That helps, thanks for doing that!

It’s definitely an improvement but I still think you need some trees. Otherwise the two landscapes look totally disconnected to me.

One thing that may be tricky about adding the trees, besides the technical aspect, is that the trees in the overhead forest shot look nothing like the ones in the Kylo fight.

With just those two scenes, I haven’t thought it’s that big a deal so far, as it goes by fairly quickly and in a real movie could just be one of those technical inaccuracies you gloss over the first time you see it.

However, if we add trees to the castle shot, that’s going to draw a lot more attention to it depending on what trees are added. If the castle trees look more like the trees in Kylo’s fight, then will the overhead shot of a totally different forest in the middle stand out too much? Or if the castle trees look more like the trees in the overhead shot, is that longer exposure going to make the Kylo fight stand out more and make it clear that the previous two shots are fan-added?

I think that’s a very good point. I had the same thought and have looked on and off for a better second shot with burnt trees to match, but so far no dice.

I guess it could partially come down to whether having a barren castle is even more jarring than either tree option.

This was really noticeable to me when people inserted the Battlefront II footage but I don’t think the trees in the overhead shot look so different as to be distracting. If I were to try adding trees to the Castle shot, I’d try to match the overhead shot as it’s at a similar angle/distance.

I think it’s cool to see how much effort the community has put in to make the Mustafar Minute work, but at the same time, I hate how much effort has had to be put into it. I feel like half of the Ascendant thread is about the Mustafar Minute.

Yeah, it was sickening like a hundred pages ago and now has come back.

The problem is that it’s the opening of the movie, and the theatrical is super rushed and set a terrible precedent for the several scenes (arguably the movie) that followed. This scene’s going to make a big impression no matter what, so it’s important to make sure it’s a good one, or as good as is practical.

Also tbh we’re kinda killing time while stuff like Rey’s blade and Luke’s hair are worked on.
