Idea: Entirely Speculative Marvel Cinematic Universe Reordering

Hey folks,

I’m not going to pick this up for a good while, because I’m working on my Clone Wars Refocused project, but for a while I’ve been teasing myself with a reordering to the MCU, so I figured I’d dump my thoughts here in case the hivemind wants to help me mull this over.

The main motivation is to make it so that, on a binge watch, you’re just kinda getting a more balanced bite of everything, without any two movies being too similar in tone, and spreading the characters out a little more. We mix cosmic with Earth a bit more consistently, lighter with heavier, etc.

I want to release it in chronological order, too. But not official chronological, just a watch order that doesn’t break anything.

I think the main thing that’ll need to be done is essentially to make a decision on the order, then some thought put into moving around the various end credits scenes.

Here’s my current working order:

  1. Captain America 1: The First Avenger (REMOVE Cap waking up and Cap gets a mission until before Avengers 1)
  2. Captain Marvel (REMOVE Carol’s return until before Endgame)
  3. Iron Man 1
  4. Incredible Hulk 1 (REMOVE general Ross scene entirely, it’s not relevant)
  5. Thor 1 (ADD Cap waking up, REMOVE Loki hypnotising Selvig until just before Avengers 1)
  6. Iron Man 2 (ADD Loki hypnotising Selvig)
  7. AVENGERS 1 (imply Loki is (willingly?) hypnotised depending on whether the Loki TV show confirms the out-of-universe retcon, possibly make staff yellow since it got retcon’d into the Mind Stone by Avengers 2)
  8. Thor 2: The Dark World (imply Loki was hypnotised as above?, if you can remove the purple girl from the handover scene you might be able to imply this comes after GotG and flip them in order to get the Guardians in play sooner?)
  9. Iron Man 3 (ADD All Hail the King?)
  10. Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier
  11. Guardians of the Galaxy 1
  12. AVENGERS 2: AGE OF ULTRON
  13. Doctor Strange 1 (REMOVE Thor and Loki visiting entirely)
  14. Ant-Man 1 (REMOVE Bucky talking to Cap and Falcon until ???)
  15. Guardians of the Galaxy 2
  16. Captain America 3: Civil War (REMOVE Cap saving team from raft until end of Black Panther, to allow more drama?)
  17. Ant-Man 2: Ant-Man and the Wasp (REMOVE snap bit until after Infinity War)
    ??. Black Widow goes here??
  18. Spider-Man 1: Homecoming
  19. Black Panther 1 (ADD Cap saving team from raft?)
  20. Thor 3: Ragnarok
  21. #AVENGERS 3: INFINITY WAR (Add Ant-man snap bit and Carol’s return)
  22. #AVENGERS 4: ENDGAME
  23. Spider-Man 2: Far from Home

I may not have explained this very clearly but I thought I’d dump my thoughts and see where this takes us.

Another idea I had was to move Steve’s voice message to Infinity War, so that the resolution is a bit more connected. If someone can imitate Friday’s AI voice, you could have some clips where Friday tells Tony that there is a voicemail from Steve.
He could ignore it the whole movie, and then you could play it after Peter dies on titan. Just an idea.

I like this idea and it’s somewhat the method I’ve adopted in my rewatches. I’ve always tinkered with the ordering of the films whenever I marathon, be it placement-wise or slotting in different fan edits for some of the entries. I’m sure I’ll never find the “perfect” blend but I thoroughly enjoy the experiments.

I’ll be sure to keep an eye on this concept and offer feedback as I’m able.

I thought about how I would structure phase 1.

  1. Captain America: The First Avenger. I think that the subtitle should be dropped as we learn the names origin in Captain Marvel.

Mid Credits: Steve waking up in 2010

  1. Iron Man

Post Credits: original scene with Nick Fury.

  1. The Incredible Hulk

Post Credits: Ivan Vanko building an arc reactor.

  1. Iron Man 2. I think that a new title should be added as a subtitle, as I’ve never liked how the iron man movies were numbered.

Mid credits: Coulson’s one shot.

Post credits: Coulson finding Thor’s hammer.

  1. Thor

Post credits: I’m not sure what to put here.

  1. Captain Marvel

Mid credits: the cat vomiting the Tesseract.

Post Credits: Nick Fury recruiting Dr. Selvig
7. The Avengers

I have multiple reasons I think this ordering would be effective;

  1. The focus of phase 1 should be the Tesseract. Introduced in Captain America, it would return in Captain Marvel. In the Avengers the other heroes deal with it too.

  2. Coulson’s journey. His sacrifice is very important to the formation of the Avengers, and I think should be highlighted throughout. In iron man we meet him as a government agent. In Iron Man 2 his competency is shown and he gains more character. In Thor we see his heart and his inert goodness. Then, we travel back to the 90’s where we see his goodness displayed once again, and we learn why Fury trusts him. His sacrifice is more effective this way I think.

  3. As many have said, the Incredible Hulk is a better movie when placed after the first Captain America movie. It shows what they were trying to create, a new Captain America.

Those are just a few ideas.

I want to preface this. I am not an editor and could never do any of the amazing things done here. I just thought I would throw these ideas to see if anyone wants them. For phase 2 I really like the reordering by NandoVMovies which I posted earlier, with a couple tweaks:

  1. Thor: The Dark World. I think think this movie desperately needs a rename. They barely spend any time actually on the Dark World. Move the Loki reveal to the mid credits scene.

Mid Credits: Odin is revealed as Loki

Post Credits: The Collecter receiving the Aether

  1. Guardians of the Galaxy.

Mid Credits: Baby Groot growing and dancing.

Post Credits: The Maximoff twins tease, without shield and hydra reference.

  1. Avengers: Age of Ultron. Cut out Falcons cameo and the New Avengers final scene. Also any hydra/shield references. Someone might need to voiceover F.R.I.D.A.Y.

Mid Credits: Absolutely no ideas what to put here.

Post Credits: Thanos putting on the Infinity gauntlet.

  1. Captain America: The Winter Solider

Mid Credits: Bucky goes to the Smithsonian.

Post Credits: The ancient one fights Kaicillius

5.Doctor Strange. Take away the opening scene.

Mid Credits: Mordo begins to steal magic.

Post Credits: Mandarin tease.

  1. Iron Man 3. Voiceover Jarvis with Friday. There needs to be a rename subtitle I think. Maybe Iron Man: Extremis?

After WandaVision I really want Phase 1-3 to be re-edited into The Avengers Seasons 1-x. It would make it so much more watchable for me if I don’t have to sit through sometimes really boring movies that focus only on one character. Someone did an edit of Thor, Incredible Hulk, and Iron Man 2 into one that worked really well. Plus, having the stories occue at the same time could also help with “why aren’t the Avengers Assembled to fix this problem” syndrome that every movie has after The Avengers.

IIRC, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” has a teaser that takes place right after the first “Avengers” movie.
